About AddEmote
Ever wished World of Warcraft had more emotes? Or wanted to create your own emotes that you could use like the regular ones? Well, now you can! AddEmote lets you easily create new /command emotes for all your characters.
Here's how you'd do it:
/addemote chinrub rubs his chin thoughtfully.
Having done that, you can then do:
/chinrub
and your character (we'll call him Alistair) would emote:
Alistair rubs his chin thoughtfully.
Wait... you say not all your characters are male? That's okay, we can handle that. AddEmote includes ChatSubs, which lets you use "substitution strings" that will automatically be changed depending on your character (or your target, but we'll get to that). So, let's make that:
/addemote chinrub rubs <hisher> chin thoughtfully.
The <hisher> will become either "his" or "her", depending on whether the character you're playing is male or female.
You can also give alternatives, separating them with vertical bars (|). If an alternative uses units that aren't available, it will be ignored. So, you could do:
/addemote petcheck checks <pet> for injuries.|wonders where <hisher> pet went.
If your combat pet is out, you'll get the first; if not, you'll get the second.
Lastly, you can use <text>, and any text you type after the /command will be inserted in its place. For example:
/addemote pe 's <pettype> <pet> <text>
/pe looks hungrily at Joe.
Talnar's wolf Red looks hungrily at Joe.
2.32
- tested compatible with 4.3
2.31
- tested compatible with 4.2
2.30
- changed AddEmote to no longer need ChatSubs as a separate addon. If ChatSubs and AddEmote are both installed, if ChatSubs has an equal or higher version, it will be used, otherwise AddEmote's internal version of ChatSubs will. This should prevent the packaging errors that caused problems for people who were installing AddEmote fresh from happening, as well as preventing problems from deleting ChatSubs, ChatSubs' TOC version not being updated, etc.
2.2.4
- updated ToC for 4.1
2.2.3
- tested and compatible with 4.0.1
2.2.2
- removed use of deprecated functions to get ready for Cataclysm
2.2.1
- bugfix
2.2
- reformatted /listeemotes' list to alphabetize the emotes and fit better in the default chat box
2.1.2
- updated ToC for WoW 3.3
- updated ChatSubs to 2.2.2, which adds <mouseover> substitution string
2.1.1
- bugfix version
2.1
- added <text> tag, to allow insertion of user-added text to the emotes. For example:
/addemote pe 's <pettype> <pet> <text>
/addemote ps 's <pettype> <pet> says, "<text>"
/pe runs around in circles.
Bonefire 's imp Gobkin runs around in circles.
/ps You never let me have any fun!
Bonefire 's imp Gobkin says, "You never let me have any fun!"
2.0
- added support for alternatives in emote strings

This addon doesn't work anymore. STILL. its been a year since the last time I tried to use it. Am I doing something wrong or is this addon just abandoned?
I've updated three times since then; it's definitely not abandoned. "This addon doesn't work" doesn't really tell me anything that'll help me to help you, though. Just in case there's some issue that's not showing up because of other addons I have, I've just renamed my AddOns and WTF folders, created new, empty ones, then downloaded AddEmote from Curse and installed it. I then started up WoW, verified that AddEmote was the only addon I had and that my settings had disappeared, and tried creating and using an emote with AddEmote. It worked, so it looks like the version that's on Curse right now is good.
So, my questions for you, so I can help you figure out what's wrong:
- Does AddEmote show up in your Addons screen? If so, is it turned on there?
- When you log in to a character, do you get any messages from AddEmote?
- If you try doing the command "/addemote test tests an emote." (without the quotes), what happens? You should get a message back saying "AddEmote: registered emote test".
- If you get that back, what happens if you do the command "/test"?
Thanks!

Think of it as being able to save a /e emote and give it a name... so if you have some you like to use a lot, you can give them names instead of typing them out in full each time.
But wait, there's more! You know how you can put %t in something you emote and get a name in it? Like, you can do "/e rolls his eyes at %t." and get "Efindel rolls his eyes at Bob."? Well, AddEmote extends that. You can put in strings that will be substituted by your character's name or your pet's name. And there are strings that will give you the proper pronouns for those. So, for example, you could have an AddEmote emote:
/addemote sostupid covers %pp face with %pp hand and shakes %pp head at how stupid %t is.
With Bob targeted, I'd then be able to do /sostupid, and get:
Efindel covers his face with his hand and shakes his head at how stupid Bob is.
But wait, what if you don't have anyone targeted? Well, by default, you'd get:
Efindel covers his face with his hand and shakes his head at how stupid everyone is.
But if you don't like that, you can give an alternate string for the command, like this:
/addemote sostupid covers %pp face with %pp hand and shakes %pp head at how stupid %t is.|shakes %pp head at the sheer stupidity of it all.
Now, if I have someone targeted, I'll get the previous one, but if I don't, I'll get:
Efindel shakes his head at the sheer stupidity of it all.
There's a lot more you can do, and it's all in the README.txt. Check it out. The worst that happens is you decide you don't like it, and delete it.
Since this isn't the first time that's happened, I've now reworked AddEmote so that it includes ChatSubs inside the AddEmote folder instead. The included version will look to see if ChatSubs is already there as a separate addon; if it is, it will compare its version to the standalone one, and will only "take over" if the standalone ChatSubs is an older version.
Since Curse can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days to approve new uploads, the new version isn't visible yet. When it is, it'll be 2.30 -- I've changed the numbering scheme to make it easier to compare whether AddEmote's version is higher than ChatSubs'.
I think being able to click in the emote text and change a mis-spelled word is much easier than completely retyping the emote.
