About Altoholic

Hi, my name is Thaoky, and I'm an Altoholic :)

Altoholic is an Ace 3 addon written for people who dedicate most of their time to leveling alts, and who want to have as much information as possible in one addon. The main feature of the addon is the search functionality which allows users to search their alts' bags or loot tables in an Auction-House-like frame (see screenshots). All this with multiple-realms/accounts support.

About the addon & the author

I've been playing WoW since the European release, and I used to rely on addons like character viewer to check my alts' inventory, but since it was more or less abandoned and not always stable for me, I decided to write an addon myself and to improve the search feature as much as I could. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do :)

The addon has been in development since December 2007 and was officially released in late March 2008. It's still not final, and although it has considerably evolved since the initial release, there are still a lot of things I haven't had time to implement yet.
Please note that this is my first addon, and that English is not my native language.

- Languages supported: enUS, frFR, deDE, esES, ruRU, zhCN & zhTW.

- Account-wide data summary:

  • Characters' talents: Full talent trees & glyphs are supported for both specializations.
  • Money, /played, rest xp for each character, subtotals by realm, and grandtotals for the account.
  • Bag usage: see at a glance which characters should get bigger bags (bag size, free slots and types included)
  • Characters' skills: skill summary on one screen, namely the 2 main professions + the 3 secondary skills as well as riding. I may add more if there's demand.
  • Reputations: a list of all the reputations of the current realm's characters. You can see at a glance if all your alts are at least honored with Honor Hold if you want to get the new 2.4 blue PVP set. Suggestions on how to grind reputations will be available soon.

- View containers (bags, bank, keyring) of all alts, on all realms.

- Guild banks : You have 10 alts in 10 different guilds on the same server, all of them with access to a guild bank ? Not a problem, you can see them all here.

- E-mail: allows you to see which alts have mail without having to reconnect them. The addon will tell you when mail is about to expire on a character. Threshold configurable (up to 15 days). Multiple realm support as well. Mails sent to a known alt (one you've logged on at least once) will be visible in the addon without having to reconnect it.

- Equipment: See the equipment of the current realm's alts in one screen. Very useful when purchasing stuff for your alts at the AH. Multiple realms supported. Right-clicking any equipment piece will allow you to find an upgrade, this feature is similar to the official wow armory feature, and is quite performant, even though it doesn't match the accuracy of the official one.

- Search: the most important feature of the addon, it uses an AH-like frame to display search results. You can either search bags on the current realm, on all realms, or a loot table.
The loot table is a table based on AtlasLoot, but which contains only item id's, and therefore keeps memory usage minimal.

The Search menu allows you to find items based on their name (even partial), level, type or rarity, almost like at the AH. It is also possible to search known recipes.

- Quest Log: See the quest logs of all your alts, as well as an indication of which alts are on a specific quest. Clicking on a quest link in the chat log will tell you which alts are on that quest.

- Suggestions: Currently, only profession leveling suggestions are available when mousing over your current level in a specific profession. Suggestions are based on the leveling guides posted on the official US forums (credit goes to their respective authors). The addon also suggests you where to quest/grind xp depending on your character level.

Suggestions were also added for the most recent factions. More to come later.

- Auction house: You can see which auctions/bids you've placed with an alt without being logged in or being at the AH.

- Professions: You can browse all known recipes in a thotbot like frame (see screenshot).

- Mounts & Pets of all your alts.

- Achievements are tracked for all you alts (see screenshot).

- Guild Members: a list of your connected guildmates, along with their alts (if they're using Altoholic too), and their average item level. Clicking their AiL will also allow you to "remotely" inspect their equipment.

- Guild Skills: a list of altoholic users in your guild, along with their alts and direct profession links. All professions are available in one click.

- Guild Bank tabs: a list of altoholic users and the time at which they last visited the guild bank. If you haven't visited the guild bank for a few days, you can remotely update your local data without going to a capital city.

The FAQ has been moved here :

  • I'd like to thank my guild, Odysse├╝s on EU-Mar├ęcages de Zangar, for assisting me since the earliest phases, thanks guys for everything you've done :)
  • Thanks to the wowace community, you've been very helpful and this addon would not be there without the technical answers you gave me (especially Xinhuan, author of BankItems)
  • Thanks to all the guys who are behind AtlasLoot, keeping the loot table up-to-date is a tremendous work, and the search functionality of Altoholic would not be what it is without your hard work.
  • Thanks to Ayindi (wowace) & sLiz3r (curse) for the German translation.
  • Thanks to NightOwl (wowace) for the zhTW translation.
  • Thanks to Wang (wowace) for the zhCN translation.

When all logical answers are not correct how ever illogical something might be It will be the correct response.

    Re: Altoholic, 5.3 & skills

    Some further observations...

The GATHERING Professions (Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning) do not seem to be affected.

Blacksmithing: my level 50 Horde Fury Warrior is affected and shows "0" skill level [should shown as 270], however, my level 32 Alliance Resto Druid is unaffected and Altoholic Skills Window shows his correct skill level of 225 (and it is 225 of 225, at a training cap).

This addon doesnt work after 5.3 for me

  • #5525

all you have to do is to check "Load out of date Addons" and it works just fine.

  • #5532

Well, it doesn't seem to keep track of the alts tradeskills.  That may be what he meant.

    Re: Altoholic, 5.3 & skills

Thanks again for providing this addon.  As a furtherance to my previous post and the one by CursedAll2Hell, I now realize that the skills for Profession 2, Cooking and First Aid show zero for the active alt.  The other alts show all skills correctly.

Of course this also means that the mouseover of profession 2, etc., does not work.

Otherwise, I have not noticed any other loss of functionalityt due to the last patch.

    Re: Altoholic & Patch 5.3

I don't know if you have updated for Patch 5.3 yet, but most functionality seems to be working okay.  the only problem I have noticed is that some of the Profession Skills are showing as "0" once an alt has logged in on 5.3.

Archaeology and Fishing do not appear to have this problem, but both Primary Professions, Cooking, and First Aid are showing zeroes for some alts.

Both of my level 90 Alts have all professions maxxed out but (except Archaeology and Fishing) show as "0" in Altoholic and some of my lower level alts also have incorrect zeroes (Skill Totals are okay in the Professions Window).

Some of the lower level alts are at a point where they have maximum skill points available until they reach a higher character level and get trained.  I do not know if that is the case for every incorrect "0" I am seeing or not.

I hope my input will be of help to you.

Thank you for all your hard work and skillful programming.  I really appreciate your generosity in supporting the WoW Community with this fine addon!

The Curse profile for Altoholic still says "Supports: 5.2.0".  So it hasn't been updated on Curse yet; in fact, last update was in mid-March.

I would love to see an update to Altoholic the day or week it comes out.  But it's just one thing in the carousel of the developer's life.

The nature of the addon itself, the thing that makes you like it, is it is so data/information intensive. It doesn't just take a little information and display it in lots of fancy ways.  It takes a lot of information.

That is the rub.  Blizzard changes the item database with each X.Y release; often changing some ID codes for things, sometimes the structure of data as well.   It and also has been known to shake things up in the profession data this way, not just items/achievements/characters.

The 'final' copies of the Lua data/program files are in a bit of flux until the non-beta version of the release finally drops from Blizzard. Thaoky has to do a big import/edit job when he gets a chance to sit down with what 5.3 has wrought in order to get the addon to talk with the WoW game client again.  Atop that, he supports multiple languages so there could be a some added work there.

True, many addon developers do these things.  But this addon is like the swiss army knife of information on WoW assets, professions, achievements, characters, talents, etc.

Realistically, you might have to wait a couple of weeks. But when Altoholic is finally out for 5.3 it will be like Christmas came twice in six months.  I really love this addon too.  I know how you feel.

Altoholic for for WoW 5.3 has just been released!!

I too enjoy using this addon for alt-tracking, and I find it an overall true help to reminding me of events and keeping track of the professions of my alts, but I do find myself having a very tiny issue with it that confused me for a moment.  The problem being that the calendar reminds me of events starting, but using the current server's time as reference.  This lead me to become confused since I have toons on servers with different time zones.  Example: Wyrmrest Accord and Moon Guard have a two-hour difference between server times, and because I had an event starting on WRA at 6PM that server's time while MG's server time is two hours faster, I was lead to wonder about if Altoholic could keep track of and recognize the differences in the server times so it would not remind me of events based on an alternate server's server time but rather the time of the server that the event is on.  I know, that seems a bit confusing in itself, but if there was a way to make a setting to recognize the active server times for each servers to clear up possible server time differences, that would really help make it so I don't get confused by having altoholic remind me of events within three hours earlier or later of the actual event time.  Just throwing a suggestion out there based on personal opinion, so you know.

Love this addon for tracking my alts (around 10 or so), but as of today, my lvl 79 Death Knight shows zeros for skill levels on first aid, cooking and jewelcrafting.  The other skills are correct as they are on my other alts.

I've tried disabling all the addons, logging out, exiting the game, reentering and enabling the addons and the skills still show as zero.  Also tried upping the skill level in jewelcrafting, all to no avail.

Not a big thing, but please put it on your list as you have the time.

    Thanks Thaoky!

    You rock!

If I could only have one addon, this would be it.

    Thanks for all you do!

  • #5514

    Hello everyone,

Just to let you know, I'm around, I'll update for 5.3 as soon as I materially can. Don't forget I'm EU, so the sooner I can start working on the addon is tomorrow evening EU time, most likely I will update either Friday evening, or this weekend, depending on the amount of work to do.

  • #5517

Will you adjust EU's tradeskill cooldown reset? It has been claiming it to be resetting at midnight CET (gametime), whereas it has been 3am since at least patch 5.2.

Thanks for an otherwise awesome addon! Great work!
