About BigWigs Bossmods

Big Wigs is a boss encounter add-on. It consists of many individual encounter scripts, or boss modules; mini add-ons that are designed to trigger alert messages, timer bars, sounds, and so forth, for one specific raid encounter.

Looking for functionality that Big Wigs doesn't cover? Try these addons:

  • Little Wigs is a plugin for Big Wigs and covers all forms of 5 man and solo content.
  • Capping covers various battleground and world PvP timers.
  • oRA3 covers all sorts of raid management functionality including raid cooldowns and Battle Res counting.
  • Old content can be installed by doing a search for BigWigs on Curse and installing the appropriate expansion addon.

Help us out

Please remember that we are always interested in hearing directly from you. About anything you want to share or ask. You may file tickets from our project page about anything, and you may also contact us on IRC; see the bottom here for details.

Note that the Big Wigs project - like 99% of all add-ons hosted on - is open for free access to anyone who cares to join. The source code is open and free, and we welcome you to participate in the future development of Big Wigs.

  • Messages: Can be moved, coloured, locked, outputted to all kinds of different text areas.
  • Bars: Can be moved, skinned to different textures (SharedMedia compatible), resized & also have an 'emphasis' feature to flash and move to a different anchor when they are about to expire.
  • Raid icons: Target painting (put an icon over a player that has been singled out by the boss).
  • Boss Block: Suppress Blizzard boss emotes.
  • Sound: Plays various sounds on different events (SharedMedia compatible).
  • LibDataBroker/Minimap: Button for easy access to the configuration menu, resetting running modules, and seeing what modules are active.

  • Proximity: For displaying players within a certain range on certain boss encounters.
  • Test: Test and preview your bars and warnings configuration, and move them around.
  • CustomBar: For 'pizza timers', create your own custom bars.
  • Flash: Flash the screen blue when something important happens that directly affects you, such as a debuff.
  • Clickable bars: Lets you define left/middle/right click actions for your timer bars.
  • Super Emphasise: Any encounter ability you want to be extra vigilant of, you can enable Super Emphasise to get a voiced countdown and more.

Ancient project history

Tekkub, the original BigWigs1 for Ace1 author - back in the MC days, was inspired to write BW1 after his very first raid. He was horrified by the massive amount of spam his raid leader was creating with his boss mod. Getting messages all over the place for things he didn't care about (Hunters can't dispel a curse or interrupt a heal - well, they couldn't back then). He also found that the "60 seconds until painful doom" timer messages were such a waste. Why not use a simple timer bar to show this?

Our goals

Big Wigs aims to be as efficient as possible (creating a lower memory per second footprint and using a lower amount of CPU than any other boss mod). When modules are written, every aspect of the encounter is inspected. Is add-on synchronisation required? Is target scanning required? What events are really needed? We also aim to have the latest encounter scripts released ASAP; not long after the first few attempts of a brand new boss, we usually have a working encounter script for it.

Thanks to all the wonderful people in #bigwigs on for help with transcripts, translations, libraries, etc. Visit the About screen in the Big Wigs interface options for a complete list of all authors who helped directly with source changes.

If you want to contact us on IRC, remember that all the main Big Wigs authors live in Europe, and the nature of IRC means you might not get a response for as long as 10 - yes, TEN - hours. Just stick around and eventually, someone will answer.

    Big Wigs v4 (r10226+) released.

    New features:

    • Pulse: Off by default. Any ability that has the "Flash" option will now have the "Pulse" option, a new feature for attracting attention.
    • Statistics: On by default. Records boss wipe/kill durations and the total amount of kills/wipes. Viewable on the individual boss panels.
    • "Only on me": Off by default. This feature is a sub-option of boss abilities that allows you to restrict messages. E.g. "Bomb: Player" will only be shown when on you.
    • Boss abilities that are restricted by role (tank/healer) are simplified, each ability has a option e.g. "Tank alert only" that can be disabled to be viewed regardless of role. In addition, a dispel role has been added.
    • Every boss ability now has customizable sounds

    • Previously cooldown/approximate abilities were represented with a tilde "~" in the name, the tilde is now next to the countdown (which makes more sense)
    • Add font size slider
    • Performance improvements for drawing bars, cuts CPU usage by half

    • Config panels are now separated by expansion, current expansion is colored to stick out
    • Fix issues when soloing bosses (no boss kill, etc)
    • Improvements to disabling/enabling of Big Wigs

    Thone of Thunder:

    • Added modules for this new 5.2 zone

    Hear of Fear/Endless Spring/Mogushan Vaults:

    • Hundreds of module improvements, can't list them all

    • Re-wrote most API calls for simplicity
    • Re-wrote the combat log arg system
    • New API calls include StackMessage, RangeMessage, CDBar, TargetBar, Me, MobId, Range
    • Added callbacks for boss win, wipe, and engage
    • EJ flags are now represented with negative numeric values rather than strings
    • Modules can now have custom options by using the locale entries custom_on_myopion or custom_off_myoption

What happened to the "Miss, Miss, Damage" type events for Sha's Thrash/Dealy Thrash?  I liked seeing it for my character so I know how effective my Elusive Brew is.

Hey i got a question, can i import any other Sounds as Warnings or is there a option to get warning sounds louder? i played yeas along with DBM and the sound in BigWigs are so quieter?

BW uses the "Master" sound channel, changing the level of the Master sound in your sound options should affect it.

It looks like you're using a custom Big Wigs skin that isn't working properly. Go into the bar customization options and change the skin back to default.

  • #1766

Try with ony BW enabled. Sounds like you have an addon force skinning the bars.

  • #1765

when i use default skin, wrong too... :S i tried delete bigwigs lua but nothing change

  • #1757

This is really a fantastic addon for raiding, keep up the great work!

So far there is only one thing i am missing in this addon. Is it possible to add a timer for "Dread Spray" on the outer Shrines in the Sha of Fear encounter? That would be really great.

  • #1755

I can't find how to change font size for Big Wig bars? I'm sure it's not in options, is there a way to do it editing any .lua?

  • #1756

That's because changing the font size of bars makes 0 sense. Use the bar scaling option and the font will scale correctly with the bar.

  • #1762

Wow, thanks a lot, downloaded the alpha and it works perfect for me now!

  • #1761

Ok, I see. I've added a slider. It will be in the next version or in the alpha right now if you're using them. It is currently 1 control for both the emphasize and standard bars as I wasn't sure if separate sizes would be useful.

  • #1760

It's called Vibrocen. Default for LUI ui.
