About BigWigs Bossmods

Introduction

Big Wigs is a boss encounter add-on. It consists of many individual encounter scripts, or boss modules; mini add-ons that are designed to trigger alert messages, timer bars, sounds, and so forth, for one specific raid encounter. These encounter scripts are activated when you target or mouse over a raid boss, or if any other Big Wigs user in your raid does. In most cases only one module will be running at any given time.

If you're looking for boss encounter scripts for 5-man dungeons, these are not in Big Wigs proper, but live in their own add-on: Little Wigs.

Help us out

Feedback

Please remember that we are always interested in hearing directly from you. About anything you want to share or ask. You may file tickets from our project page about anything, and you may also contact us on IRC; see the bottom here for details.

The comments on curse.com are rarely, if ever, read or replied to by any of the Big Wigs authors.

Open

Note that the Big Wigs project - like 99% of all add-ons hosted on wowace.com - is open for free access to anyone who cares to join. The source code is open and free, and we welcome you to participate in the future development of Big Wigs.

Transcripts and combat logs

If you want to help us out with a new boss encounter that was recently introduced to the game, you can get our Transcriptor add-on that helps you record raw, relevant data for each encounter. Your help is appreciated, and also needed! Compressed output from Transcriptor may be uploaded alongside a ticket, or dumped on sites such as dump.no and linked from a ticket. Or you can even e-mail it to one of the authors.

But if you don't care for Transcriptor, a simple /combatlog will also help. Don't forget to tell us what raid size, difficulty, and encounter the log is for.

Ancient project history

Tekkub, the original BigWigs1 for Ace1 author - back in the MC days, was inspired to write BW1 after his very first raid. He was horrified by the massive amount of spam his raid leader was creating with his boss mod. Getting messages all over the place for things he didn't care about (Hunters can't dispel a curse or interrupt a heal - well, they couldn't back then). He also found that the "60 seconds until painful doom" timer messages were such a waste. Why not use a simple timer bar to show this?

Our goals

Big Wigs aims to be as efficient as possible (creating a lower memory per second footprint and using a lower amount of CPU than any other boss mod). When modules are written, every aspect of the encounter is inspected. Is add-on synchronisation required? Is target scanning required? What events are really needed? We also aim to have the latest encounter scripts released ASAP; not long after the first few attempts of a brand new boss, we usually have a working encounter script for it.

Credits

Thanks to all the wonderful people in #wowace on irc.freenode.net for help with transcripts, translations, libraries, etc. Visit the About screen in the Big Wigs interface options for a complete list of all authors who helped directly with source changes.

If you want to contact us on IRC, remember that all the main Big Wigs authors live in Europe, and the nature of IRC means you might not get a response for as long as 10 - yes, TEN - hours. Just stick around and eventually, I guarantee we will answer. If you have the patience of a goldfish, however, you might as well just stay away.

Try delete your BigWigs saved variables?
  • #801
5561 fixes bar anchors and adds some extra options.
  • #803
No, you can reset them yourself if you wish.

I've been having a problem with BigWigs since the latest update. The emphasized bar is too high on my screen to move it. I have tried to lower the UI scale and it did work, but i had to move every other addon in place again, plus it resetted the next time i logged in. Is there any way you could move the default anchor a bit lower? because I don't want to reconfigure all my addons the whole time... :S

Also, is there any hance to get the old bar colors back? Like green at first and red at the end when the timer is nearly gone.
  • #818
I deleted the mod and reinstalled and it works correctly now, thank you. :)
But I still wonder if I can set the colors back to what they were before the patch, is this still possible?

Since some release versions I have a problem with the version check. Up to today's update, I got error messages, now it only recognizes the version of 8 persons in a 25-man-raid. My own addon seems to have the version 5522 if I check it by reading the "about"-window, although the Curse client says it's version 5533.
I use the deDE language pack.

How can I get rid of that problem?
  • #807
The funny thing is that the version checker doesn't recognize some of the updated versions. Three guys I asked did an update ca. 30 minutes before I did the check, nevertheless my Bigwigs told me that those three don't use BigWigs at all. My guess is that some of the other raid members also had an updated version which were not recognized, but I have to check again this evening.
  • #791
After Bigwigs updated my add-on is messed up. The bar positions have reset, and the emphasized bar is in a place I can't move it, or see it. Tried resetting position, but that does nothing.
  • #792
They have reset because it's a new bars module. Show the anchors and move them.
  • #793
Yeah, I can't do that though. The anchor for emphasized is off screen. It's so far in the top of my screen that the anchor isn't moveable or even visible for that matter.
  • #794
I'm not exactly sure how that's possible, try lowering your UI scale in the video options and see if it comes back.
  • #795
    That worked, thanks.
  • #784
I have some troubles with Big wigs during the fight against Emalon. Sometimes the raid icon is not put. I play a rogue, so i would know how big wigs runs to run correctly the raid icon.

I have exactly the same problem. I am raid leader in VoA25, and in both raids the icon would be placed on the enraged add maybe once, and then it would stop doing it, though sometimes it did it more than once. Sometimes it doesnt do it at all.

It would be really, really, really great if this could be fixed, or an explanation on how to get rid of the problem.
The only thing I can think of is that perhaps multiple people being raid assist have bigwigs, and big wigs tries to put the icon on the enraged add multiple times. So for the first person bigwigs puts it on, and then the 2nd person's bigwigs does the same thing but instead it is taken off?

Im a nab when it comes to addons so I'm just speculating.
  • #786
No, infact the more people promoted the higher the likely hood of it targeting faster. Mods require at least one person to be targeting the mob for the icon to be placed such as a tank etc, they don't need to be promoted, but at least 1 person must be targeting that mob, you can bypass that need if you have that mob as a focus and are promoted, it will add it.
