About ButtonTimers

ButtonTimers is action buttons with timers attached. The timers can be configured to show a buff/debuff or the cooldown of a spell. The timers are highly configurable, with lots of options to play with.

Important note:

There are a limited number of action slots (1-120). These correspond to 10 bars of 12 buttons each. These are the same 120 slots that every action bar mod has to use (Bartender, PitBull, Blizzard's standard UI, etc.)

Chances are you aren't using all 12 slots on all 10 bars. You can configure ButtonTimers to use any of the 120 action slots you want. Do this with the "First button on bar is.." slider in the bar configuration.

If you don't change the "First button on bar is..", the bars will default to bars 10, 9, 8, 7. Note that bars 7-9 are by default the stance bars, so if your class uses stances you may wish to change it.

Getting Started:

When you first start the mod, you will see 4 bars of 12 buttons each. Open up the options (in the interface->addons panel), and disable the bars you won't be using. Next change the number of buttons from 12 to however many buttons you would like to see.

Now change the action slots the bar is showing you. Just take the action offset slider and slide it until you see some unused action buttons. Then drag the spells/abilities of your choice onto the bar.

The default is to track dots/debuffs/buffs. If that's what you want the timer to reflect, you are done. If you want to see a cooldown instead, select the configuration for the button and change the selector from "Aura" to "Cooldown".

There are lots of configuration options, go ahead and play with them. But that should be enough to get you started.

Bar configuration options are:

  • Bar Enabled: enable / disable the bar.
  • Hide out of combat: don't show the bar out of combat.
  • Bar Locked: lock the bar in position so that it cannot be dragged.
  • Orientation: horizontal or vertical layout for the buttons on the bar. You can also put the timers on the buttons themselves.
  • Timer Location: you can select whether you want the bar be on the left or right of the button (in vertical orientation) or above/below the button (in horizontal orientation)
  • Button Spacing: the space between the buttons on the bar.
  • Bar Scale: size the whole bar larger or smaller
  • Bar Length: length of the timer bar
  • Button Count: number of buttons on the bar (1-12)
  • First button on bar is.. action slot number of the first button on the bar. Blizzard gives 120 action slots, which are traditionally allocated into 10 bars, but this mod gives a finer control over which slots you wish to use. Just slide this control until you find some unused slots.

Button options are:

  • Type: Set whether you wish to monitor a cooldown or an aura on the default bar target. You can also monitor both aura and cooldown. The cooldown will show up on the button and the aura timer on the bar if you select both.
  • Timer Type: The timer can either be shown as a percentage of the aura/cooldown duration or in fixed time. For example, if you choose a fixed time with a time of 10s, a full bar will always represent 10 or more seconds. This makes it easier to see which aura/cooldown will complete first, regardless of the spell's length.
  • Bar Time: This sets the max time displayed on a fixed time timer bar. Any timer durations longer than Bar Time will show as a full bar.
  • Show others' spells: By default, the timer will only monitor auras on the target if you were the caster of the spell. Click this button if you wish to see other's spells as well. The timer will always show your own spell if you have one on the target. Note: Pet spells do not count as being cast by you, so if you wish to monitor a pet spell then click this button.
  • Other Auras: By default, an aura timer will monitor the bar's default target for an aura matching the name of the spell on the action button. In this field you can enter additional auras (in a comma separated list) to look for.
  • Cooldown spell: By default, a cooldown timer will monitor the cooldown on the action on the bar. But you can also enter a spell name to monitor instead.
  • Bar Color: The color of the timer bar.
  • Target: This will select the default target (to target, focus target, self, party, pet) for all actions on the bar. It also controls what target to monitor for auras.
  • Use as spell target: If set, target will be the spell target as well as the target to monitor for the selected aura.
  • Warn less than cast time: Change the bar color when timer less than cast time. Also tints the action button.
  • Warning Bar Color: Bar color for timers when remaining time less than cast time.
  • Adjust Timer: Number of seconds to add to timer (can be negative).

Command line options:

/buttontimers reset - reset bar positions to default

/buttontimers config - open the configuration dialog (can also be accessed on Blizzards interface -> addons panel)

    Hi,

Is it possible to add "pet target" to the list of units to monitor in the drop down box?

Clean way to handle multi dotting imo

This addon is good, but is using too much CPU.

Using "Broker_CPU Memory" I found what addons are using most of CPU.

    1) Recount - 34 s

    2) ButtonTimers - 23 s

    3) VohDo - 19 s

    4) Ace3 - 10s

Well, VohDo is much more useful and complex, but uses less CPU than ButtonTimers.

If you have problems with FPS in 25 man rides, than you first should delete recount, and second ButtonTimers.

hey, started using this addon a while ago and loving it, the only 2 downparts for me are (unless i missed that option somehow in the config) that im using it to track my dots placing the bar in the middle of my screen so i can see them all at a glance  without taking eye off whats going on. now due to that positioning (button only not the timerbars on em) it happens when trying to target i click drag it out of the bar. is there an option to button lock them and make click true? with keybinds i never actually click the buttons so would be great to use em for tracking mid screen since they don fill up lot of place if u only enabel the button looks.  while still able to target something standing behind em not risking to refresh a thing to soon/using cd or drag the button out the bar.

gj tho this addon  became a must have to me for my lock!!!

Use the games Lock ActionBars setting in the games ActionBars options settings.

Can somebody tell me what the "?" in the upper right corner is for?

Great Addon, cant play without it anymore! :D

If its the problem I think it is, then its related to using a non-standard font and you should see the exact same behavior displayed on blizzards action bars.  Blizz does range checking and changes the color of the keybind character displayed on the button to indicate whether the target is in range (gray) or out of range (red).  When you don't have a key bound then it uses a black circle character; most of the custom fonts people add don't include a glyph for that character so blizzard shows the ? character. Wierdly, when they show the ? they kind of screw up the positioning of it compared to when there is a key bound for that button. Again, that is something you can see on blizzards action bars /buttons (cause that's basically what we're using) and so its not a button timers bug.

So, you could contact whomever is providing that font and tell them to add in the required glyph:
glyph (may depend on font you're using to see it correctly) ●
    name Black Circle
    unicode code point U+25CF
    utf-8 encoding 226 151 143

    anyone?

Hello, thanks for making and maintaining my favorit mod, been using this for a long time and use it on pretty much every toon in some way.  For the lock nothing is better.

There have been some auras over time that just don't have a time associated with them anymore, such as fel armor went from 30min to being a forever buff (until death, cancellation etc).  I used to have one of my bars tracking buffs like this and want to know if it can be considered in the next patch to be tracked.  Other useful things like 'moonkin aura', 'mind quickening' things I like to put in to see at a glance if i have a haste buff.  I know this can be done with other addons, but if the functionality could be built into buttontimers i would much prefer to just roll with this addon as a catch all.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Oh also, this reminds me I track the chaos bolt cd for destro (i know its barely useful) and would love to see a way to track the cd for this spell as well as add an aura for timewarp/ancient whatever/bloodlust/backdraft.  Currently if you track the cd you can't track the aura at the same time (both does not work for this type).

So, if I'm reading the Chaos Bolt stuff right, you basically want a timer bar when its on cooldown or when heroism type effects are up? I'm guessing this is a "during heroism, chaos bolts damage per cast time drops below incinerates" kind of thing?  Sorry, but I'm not sure that we would add support for something like that. If no other reason than needing to fix higher priority issues in other addons first.

Similar issue with the buffs that don't have a duration like fel armor.  I know you dont' want to use another addon, but something like Tell Me When can be really nice for those.  Rather than show any kind of timer when I have fel armor, I have it set to show me a big fat icon near the center of the screen when I'm *missing* it.  I have it set up to do the same for soul link and dark intent; makes it handy after a battle rez to get those important buffs back up but without wasting any kind of screen real estate for the standard "everything is fine" situation.

I've been using this addon for over a year now. I'll admit, at times I've strayed, dated newer, sexier addons from time to time. But in the end I always come back because nothing will ever replace ButtonTimers.

And so I was wondering: would it be possible to add the ability to show the bard with the following conditionals? Bar is hidden by default and will display if either: a hostile target is selected, one of the bars is currently displaying something, or if the player is in target? This would allow me to have it hidden at all times but also display if I am out of combat and looking to attack something.

Thanks again for the awesome addon; I could not play without it.

is there a way to get the button to show a timer for the duration of the buff created by the spell. for example on my shaman i have searing totem on one of the bars, is there a way for the timer to show the duration of the totem before it expires?

  • #731

Shaman totems are kind of a special case in terms of how blizzard handles them. We don't currently support a timer for them. Its on the list of things to do, but its a long list heh.

    Hi,

Great mod, could'nt live without it !!!!

However have a question/request. Is there a way to add "Pet Target" to the drop down menu where you select which target to moniter for debuffs.

I have a bar set up for my cd's, another for my target, would love to use a third for pet target as I manually control the felhunter and have his attack bound to haunt. the idea was to open with a normal rotation on the first target with dots, debuffs, pet attacking etc, then select a second target and throw up the dots and shadowbolt spam. Use a ctrl or alt as a modifer to my normal bindings to recast expiring dots on my pets targets without the need for setting a focus first or having to switch between targets to recast.

    Hope this makes sense.

    Cheers,

    Rupes

I took a quick swing at this but it didn't fully work.  The timer wouldn't show unless I switched to that target.  I could switch away and timer would continue to show correctly and having "Use as spell target" worked too as I was clicking on the buttontimers button to cast the spell.  But it wouldn't refresh or start the timer and so I'll have to investigate why.  So, sorry, but I probably won't get to this until after I do the profile overhaul.
