About ButtonTimers

ButtonTimers is action buttons with timers attached. The timers can be configured to show a buff/debuff or the cooldown of a spell. The timers are highly configurable, with lots of options to play with.

Important note:

There are a limited number of action slots (1-120). These correspond to 10 bars of 12 buttons each. These are the same 120 slots that every action bar mod has to use (Bartender, PitBull, Blizzard's standard UI, etc.)

Chances are you aren't using all 12 slots on all 10 bars. You can configure ButtonTimers to use any of the 120 action slots you want. Do this with the "First button on bar is.." slider in the bar configuration.

If you don't change the "First button on bar is..", the bars will default to bars 10, 9, 8, 7. Note that bars 7-9 are by default the stance bars, so if your class uses stances you may wish to change it.

Getting Started:

When you first start the mod, you will see 4 bars of 12 buttons each. Open up the options (in the interface->addons panel), and disable the bars you won't be using. Next change the number of buttons from 12 to however many buttons you would like to see.

Now change the action slots the bar is showing you. Just take the action offset slider and slide it until you see some unused action buttons. Then drag the spells/abilities of your choice onto the bar.

The default is to track dots/debuffs/buffs. If that's what you want the timer to reflect, you are done. If you want to see a cooldown instead, select the configuration for the button and change the selector from "Aura" to "Cooldown".

There are lots of configuration options, go ahead and play with them. But that should be enough to get you started.

Bar configuration options are:

  • '''Bar Enabled:''' enable / disable the bar.
  • '''Hide out of combat:''' don't show the bar out of combat.
  • '''Bar Locked:''' lock the bar in position so that it cannot be dragged.
  • '''Orientation:''' horizontal or vertical layout for the buttons on the bar. You can also put the timers on the buttons themselves.
  • '''Timer Location:''' you can select whether you want the bar be on the left or right of the button (in vertical orientation) or above/below the button (in horizontal orientation)
  • '''Button Spacing:''' the space between the buttons on the bar.
  • '''Bar Scale:''' size the whole bar larger or smaller
  • '''Bar Length:''' length of the timer bar
  • '''Button Count:''' number of buttons on the bar (1-12)
  • '''First button on bar is..''' action slot number of the first button on the bar. Blizzard gives 120 action slots, which are traditionally allocated into 10 bars, but this mod gives a finer control over which slots you wish to use. Just slide this control until you find some unused slots.

Button options are:

  • '''Type:''' Set whether you wish to monitor a cooldown or an aura on the default bar target. You can also monitor both aura and cooldown. The cooldown will show up on the button and the aura timer on the bar if you select both.
  • '''Timer Type:''' The timer can either be shown as a percentage of the aura/cooldown duration or in fixed time. For example, if you choose a fixed time with a time of 10s, a full bar will always represent 10 or more seconds. This makes it easier to see which aura/cooldown will complete first, regardless of the spell's length.
    • '''Bar Time:''' This sets the max time displayed on a fixed time timer bar. Any timer durations longer than Bar Time will show as a full bar.
  • '''Show others' spells:''' By default, the timer will only monitor auras on the target if you were the caster of the spell. Click this button if you wish to see other's spells as well. The timer will always show your own spell if you have one on the target. Note: Pet spells do not count as being cast by you, so if you wish to monitor a pet spell then click this button.
  • '''Other Auras:''' By default, an aura timer will monitor the bar's default target for an aura matching the name of the spell on the action button. In this field you can enter additional auras (in a comma separated list) to look for.
    • "Show Aura Icon:" When checked, the icon on the button will update to match the aura we are showing the timer for.
    • "Ignore Button Aura:" When checked, timers will only be created for the auras specified in the Other Auras field. If Show Aura Icon is also checked, then the icon on the button when no timer is present will be the first aura listed in the Other Auras field.
  • '''Cooldown spell:''' By default, a cooldown timer will monitor the cooldown on the action on the bar. But you can also enter a spell name to monitor instead.
  • '''Bar Color:''' The color of the timer bar.
  • '''Target:''' This will select the default target (to target, focus target, self, party, pet) for all actions on the bar. It also controls what target to monitor for auras.
  • '''Use as spell target:''' If set, target will be the spell target as well as the target to monitor for the selected aura.
  • '''Warn less than cast time:''' Change the bar color when timer less than cast time. Also tints the action button.
  • '''Warning Bar Color:''' Bar color for timers when remaining time less than cast time.
    • "Adjust Cast Time:" Additional number of seconds to add, or subtract, from the cast time. Set this value to the effect's duration * 0.3 for the warn color to show when its safe to refresh an effect without wastage.
  • '''Adjust Timer:''' Number of seconds to add to timer (can be negative).

Command line options:

Added a cast time adjustment field to the option for warning when the cast time is less than the remaining duration of an aura. Useful for identifying when its safe to refresh the effect without clipping.

     I hope posting this is ok, but if it isn't or if stencil or Misen object to me posting this I'll remove it.

     I was thinking the same and saw there wasn't really much on this and the fixed timer really didn't suit me.

    I therefore added a bit of code to the buttontimers to get a more visible feature to when the basic dots are at less than 50% of their normal duration. To make this work all you need to do is tick the warn cast < time in the options on that specific button turning it to whichever color you have selected. The issue with this code is that it doesn't base the duration on your own haste but the basic duration of the spells. For example if you take Corruption which has a basic duration of 18 seconds but you got it at 17 seconds due to haste the addon will still change colour at 9 seconds and not 8.5. I had to do it this was I have no idea if you can get the basic duration from a spell on a player, at least I didn't find it anywhere in the API. So if anyone would know then I'd be happy to learn. (This sould apply to Unstable Affliction, Corruption (both demo and aff), Agony, Doom and Immolate (However this hasn't been tested in demo)).  


    So here is the code:

    I know this isn't a very good fix and it dips into other methods being used already, but for a quick fix I thought this would be ok.

    A couple of other folks have asked for some kind of Pandemic support so I'll probably add something when I get free time, but its low on the to-do list right now because there's a pretty good alternative.

    Rather than Adjust Timer you could change the Timer Type from Full time to Fixed time and then set the bar time value for the halfway point of the dots duration.  That way, when you see the timer bar start moving you know you're within the window for pandemic and that its safe to refresh.  And even when the bar is pegged at max length you'll still be able to see the current duration in the text timer on the bar.

    I have a slight issue on my Protection Warrior. 

    Devastate apples the Weakened Armor debuff to the enemy, stacking up to theree times. To display this effect on BT I have it set to Target, Aura, and add Weakened Armor to the Other Auras box. It works GREAT after I do this, but after a death, zoning, phasing, or for seemingly no reason at all Devastate stops showing the timer. When I check in the options Weakened Armor has removed itself from the Other Auras box, but all my other settings remain intact. 

    Not sure if I'm just overlooking something or if it's a bug.

    Its a bug. I'm investigating and will try to get a fix in soon.

    This has to do with the way that Devestate replaces Sunder Armor.  Zoning into an instance I'm getting a slew of PLAYER_TALENT_UPDATE events and while processing them the spell id on that button is 7386 which is Sunder Armor.  Then we get an ACTIONBAR_SLOT_CHANGED event for that button and its as if the user had dragged Devestate onto a button replacing Sunder Armor.

    That ended up triggering some code related to auto configuring the button timer settings for a button based on the spell that Misen had started working on.  It was only implemented for subset of spells, almost all Warrior.  Since that's a class I don't play I didn't realize that code was really live and running.  Commenting it out should fix your problems.

    No matter what settings choosen, I cannot get my old Beacon of Light button timer to display. It has always been set for the 5 minute duration of the beacon but now only flashes for a second then disappears. It may be because the spell duration seems non existent in anything I read, but its always been useful to ensure the tank never goes without. Any suggestions?

    I just checked in some code to try to fix this scenario; you're correct that its caused by the aura having 0 as the values for duration and expiration time.  Download the latest alpha build and let me know how it works.

    I need help. I can't get my buttontimers to load on old characters as well. The newly created lvl 1 char works fine though. I can't find the setting folder like what "Sarking37" suggested but i deleted the buttontimers.lua in wtf > save variables folder and it is still not working. Buttontimers is essential to my warlock and i need help from u guys. Thank you.

    I found a copy of an old buttontimers.lua saved settings file and was able to reproduce and find the bug.  The latest version should work.

    I hope when you deleted buttontimers.lua from the wtf folder that you kept a copy or can restore the file from the recycle bin as that file contains all the info related to how you had the timers setup.  If you can put it back the new version (2.5.3) should process it correctly.

    Not sure if this is already possible but with the addition of Pandemic for warlocks I was wondering if there is a way to set a warning at a specific time left. Like the ones already for cast time, but being able to set when the bar changes to warning color. I hope that is clear.

    I can't get Buttontimers to load on old charaters. I guess it's something obvious that I am missing, but I can't figure it out. I have downloaded the latetest version and I have no other addons loaded. When I log in on my new monk, then buttimers works fine. But when I log in on my old level 85 characters there is no trace of Buttimers working. In the Interface Add-on tab there is nothing. The command line /buttontimers config and /buttontimers reset do not work (they do work on the monk). I checked in the login screen, with the add-on button, and can see that Buttontimers is checked for all the characters.

    Do any of you have an idea how I can fix that?

    Edit: deletion of buttontimers.lua from the setting folder fixed it

    With release 2.5.2 and the Ignore Button Aura option, its now easier to create seperate timers for Corruption and Doom.  Just set the name in Other Auras and check Show Aura Icon and Ignore Button Aura; there's no longer a need for the macros we were using before.

    Paladins and Sacred Shield

    Greetings once again!

         As ever, thanks for your continuing efforts on ButtonTimers -- I love this addon and use it on almost all of my characters, including of course my warlock.

         My Retribution Paladin has a new spell called Sacred Shield.  I'd like to get a meaningful timer bar working on this spell, but the spell itself is bizarre.  When you first cast it, it starts a 29 second aura (Spell ID 20925).  The aura bar starts counting down correctly at this point from 29 seconds.  So far, so good.

         After six seconds, the spell applies a shield to the paladin (looks like a priest's Holy Word:Shield) which lasts up to six seconds (if he's not getting clobbered), then it resets itself as another six-second shield.  The Spell ID for this shield is 65148.  ButtonTimers' aura bar starts repeatedly counting down from six seconds until the original spell elapses in half a minute.

         In order to know when to refresh the spell, I only want to see the 20925 aura, not the 65148 aura.  The problem is they both have the same name.  I tried putting the 20925 Spell ID into the Other Auras box, and checking the Ignore Other Auras box, but it still shows the 65148 aura doing its repeated 6-second countdown.  I tried a macro with a useless initial spell followed by Sacred Shield, but ButtonTimers still seems to figure it out.

         Any ideas how I can get ButtonTimers to show only the 20925 aura on this spell?
