About DPSCheck

DPSCheck looks for common issues affecting hunter DPS. It monitors hunter activity during combat and looks for common mistakes that lead to preventable DPS losses. The original motivating example was lost auto shots from movement - optimal hunter DPS in movement heavy fights requires carefully timed stutter steps. DPSCheck will estimate the number of lost auto shots and compare it against the actually fired shots. In addition, DPSCheck also checks shot priorities and varies buffs and debuffs affecting performance. Mistakes in shot priorities and buff/debuff coverage are both reported.

DPSCheck was written after a hunter community call to arms to build a tool to help self-diagnose DPS problems. Many current and planned features have been suggested by the hunter community at outdps.com.

So I just stumbled across this addon and have been giving it a try. I don't understand something though. It says I have 93 failed auto shots. It says 50/71.7.

I'm hit capped. This is on a target dummy. I did it for only a few minutes. I hit Auto Shot at the beginning of the fight, and ensured it was going off. I did not move either.

    Why so many failed?
  • #2
If you were moving constantly, then your auto shots would be retrying every half second, and you'd get a failed auto shot each half second. Your ranged attack speed is probably between 2.5-3.0, so you'd only lose about 0.18-0.20 auto shots for each failure. You said you weren't moving, but that is why you have 93 fails but only 21.7 lost auto shots.

There is a known issue where /stopcasting always triggers the same event as an auto shot failing while you move. I'd guess you have that in your macros to break out of Steady Shots. There is a hack to get rid of the /stopcasting issue by checking if you are moving, but then it'd miss when you were out of range or facing the wrong way.

I'm not using it in a macro. Crazy thought but doesn't autoshot automatically kick in? I mean I have it on my cast bar, and I see it firing.

From what you explained, it makes sense on how some can be missed.

If you don't have a /stopcasting macro, then that's a new bug to me. Does it happen when you are just using Auto Shot and no specials?
  • #7
I was using my normal rotation, making sure of course, that auto shot was firing off. No macro was being used. When you say no specials, I'm guessing you are asking if I was using shots other than auto shot. The answer to that question, would be yes. I will have to test with just auto shots, but with the expansion gearing up, I might not have time. I will try.

Interesting mod, I going to check it out... I also think I am a pretty smart guy when it comes to understanding stuff... But I didn't understand a word of what you just said in that first paragraph.
  • #4
Every time you fail to shoot because of movement, range, or facing the wrong way, you wait 0.5 seconds before trying to fire again. If you have a 3.0 attack speed, you just wasted the time for 0.5/3.0 ~ 0.1666 shots. 6 failed shots would only result in one lost. That is why you can have a lot more failed shots than lost shots.

    Better?
