About Explore the World
Explore the World is an addon that attempts to encourage exploration since most of the end game is spent waiting for LFR/LFG/BG, completely missing all the detail and work that has been put into the world. To do this the addon provides you with questions, but unlike a regular trivia addon, you're forced to be at the relevant location in order to answer the question. This is done with the help of different categories as seen below.
DISCLAIMER
This addon is in active development and the addon will be regularly updated with more content. I'm always looking for more people to help with creating more questions so scroll down to the bottom of this page if you're interested in helping out.
Introducing challenges
Challenges are now in the addon in their first draft, currently holding two challenges: singleplayer and multiplayer. Let me know what you think about them in the comment section below.
Slash commands
These commands will bring up the main addon frame
- etw
- exploretheworld
Important, please read
The addon will NOT work on non-english clients since I can't store subzones by ID and thus cannot localize it for the whole addon. Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused.
Categories
These are the different categories of questions that exists within the addon
Tracking
The Tracking category is exactly what it sounds like, it involves you tracking down an NPC (by targeting it) to answer the question. Clues are given as well as 3D models.
Investigation
The Investigation category might be slightly less obvious what it's about. The goal of it is to locate an area and answer a question related to its surroundings: "What's carved into the wall", "What is hidden between the walls" and so forth. These questions usually have multiple answers since you write the answer yourself.
Exploration
The Exploration category should also be pretty self-explanatory; it's about locating a zone. The zone you look for is very rarely a "big" or "known" zone such as Stormwind, Zangarmarsh and so forth. It's usually something like Gurubashi Arena, Aerie Peak and similar, called "sub zones".
Group questions
This category adds nothing new other than you need to be 2-5 players in a party in order to answer them. So if you have a group question of the Tracking category then it might require you to track down individual members of a family (or something of the sort). The question can then only be answered once all members of the party has found one member of the family respectively and are in the correct zone etc.
Additional features
Additional features of the addon include:
- Challenges. A new kind of objective that reuses already unlocked questions in order to unlock more. They have a shared cooldown which can be reduced by completing questions.
- Unlockable questions. The majority of questions are unlocked by exploration: entering a zone, targeting an npc, reading a book/scroll/tombstone, completing a question and so forth.
- A sense of progression. You will be able to keep track of your progress through ranks as well as a counter of your completed questions.
- Inspecting/Comparing. You will be able to see the progress of other players and see their ranks, allowing for comparison of competition.
- Teamwork. You can always link questions to your friends so they can quickly bring it up in their addon and help you explore, and of course group questions encourage additional teamwork :)
Bugs
Please report any bugs you find with the Curse ticket system
Becoming part of development and giving feedback
If you want to help out with creating more questions and get your name on the credit list or create new questions yourself that can later be put into the official version of the addon, then there's more information within the addon help menu (in-game) on how to do so.
Supporting me
Explore the World only has one developer (me) and it's very time consuming for me to create content as it involves many parts such as coming up with a question, making unlock attributes, 3D models and whatnot. Developing this addon is (unfortunately) not my full-time job. However, I will keep creating content but it might not be in the fastest pace possible, but if you want to show your support in me in to keep actively creating more content feel free to make a donation.

Comments
Would love to see this updated, or a fan-update.
Any updates on this project?
Sorry for the lack of updates lately, I've been busy doing tons of other things as well as recently reinstalling my OS. Which has given me some trouble getting WoW to work again (I'm using Linux as primary OS), but once I get things sorted out I'll start working on more content for the addon.
Is this account-wide?
Yes, it is account wide. Thus, the save file is saved across all your characters on that account and WoW client.
Quick update: I've been very busy and haven't had much time to work on the addon, and from Saturday I'll be away for a week. But after that I should be able to keep working on content.
I can't wait to try this out, thank you! It's too bad that we're all flying (literally) by most of the world and we miss so many amazing little gems.
Couple of requests: Can we make the Unknown (??/??) bar movable or hidable (And what exactly is it?) and make a mini map button to hid/unhide the ETW main panel.
The "Unknown" bar will show ETW data about the person you're inspecting if they have the addon (and are allowing for data inspections). I will probably, as you said, make it hideable it in a (soon) future patch. As for the minimap button I haven't looked into how to make those very much right now, as I'm not using any libraries it's slightly harder for me to do. In the meantime just make a macro running /etw
EDIT: The inspect frame can now be hidden as of 0.2.7b
Getting some errors with the new hide function.
ExploreTheWorld-0.2.7b\InspectFrame.lua:63: attempt to index global "InspectPaperDollFrame" (a nil value)
ExploreTheWorld-0.2.7b\InspectFrame.lua:63: in function <ExploreTheWorld\InspectFrame.lua:11
Do you want comments on things like spelling errors/grammar etc.?
Yea that would be great, although I'd prefer you mail such things to the e-mail found within the addon on the help pages.
Is this something that people would be interested in? It allows you to unlock new questions every now and then and adds some replay value to questions:
Seems like it could be fun.
This seems really fun! Please keep up the good work.
Edit: I love that it feels like it could be a part of the default interface.
