About Group Calendar 5

Limited updates until the expansion

I've activated a Starter Edition subscription so that I can test changes being posted in the comments before I upload them. I won't be updating frequently or doing earnest development until after the expansion when I activate my normal account, but please use the comments to share fixes you find until then and I'll work on getting them integrated and posted. Thanks!

Reporting Bugs

Feel free to report bugs in the comments section at the bottom of this page, but please remove the addon list from your logs. Those lists tend to be very large which makes it much harder for me to read and reply to other posts. I will ask for the addon list if I think it might be important or, better yet, create a CurseForge ticket and include the whole log in there instead. Thanks!

About Group Calendar 5

IMPORTANT: You must not enable Group Calendar 4 and Group Calendar 5 at the same time, neither one will be happy about it. You can switch back and forth and will not lose data in either one by doing so, you just can't enable both at once.

I have not written a manual for Group Calendar 5 yet, but the GC4 manual is available at http://wobbleworks.com/groupcalendar/manual/ and covers many of the principles used in GC5's design.

Group Calendar 5 features

  • Compatible with the built-in calendar and web-based armory calendars
  • View and edit events using local or server dates and times
  • Track tradeskill cooldowns
  • Create partnerships for coordinating events across multiple guilds
  • Export your calendar to the iCalendar format for use in external applications or web calendars
  • Reminders for upcoming events and tradeskill cooldowns
  • View events and get reminders while on your alts
  • Easy invite management to track group composition
  • Quickly invite players to the raid from the attendance list
  • Set level limits and duration for events
  • Analog clock with date on the minimap button for attractive timekeeping

Group Calendar 5 is completely re-built around the WoW calendar database. This allows it to work with the built-in calendar, including the armory web-based calendar. Also, because it works with the built-in calendar, your guild members are not required to use this addon since they can use the built-in calendar instead. They will still see your events and be able to sign up for them even if they choose to use the built-in calendar.

There is no documentation yet as I'm still working on development. The operation is similar to GC4, except that events only show up for players you invite. There is a new Invite tab in the event editor for selecting who should see the event and the selection will be remembered so that next time you create the same event you won't have to re-select it.

The multi-guild partnerships feature is different too because of the invite system the WoW calendar uses. To support multi-guild partnerships use the Partners tab in the main window to set up a roster-sharing partnership with a player in the other guild(s). Follow the instructions on that tab to set up the partnership. Once it's set up, the partner guilds will appear in your Invite tab in the event editor, where you can then mass-invite players from those guilds.

Since Blizzard doesn't have any support for mass-inviting players from other guilds, GC5 will invite them one at a time at the maximum speed Blizzard allows. This can take a while for large partnerships and I recommend that you use copy-and-paste to create additional events once you have an event set up the way you want it. Note that you can not copy an event while you're creating it, you must create it first and then you can copy it and paste the copy to a new date.

Would you be interested in expanding this addon significantly? Am willing to pay cash for the work. I sent you a board pm with my contact info.

  • #1226

How long does it take to initialize the data channel, I set up a manual channel config, and used an alt of mine to store the auto config on.

If it's Synchronizing then it will take five minutes after connecting. If you're getting stuck at Initializing though then something is wrong and I'm not sure what's happening. Try using the /join command to join the channel manually and see if that works. Maybe you're running up against the max. channel limit and the error isn't getting reported properly by GC, I'm not sure.

  • #1227

Will there be a Bug-Fix, so that the Time is saved and automatically filled in too?

Thanks for catching that, I'm not sure when I broke the time field but it should be getting set automatically just like the other fields. I'll have this fixed in the next build.

  • #1228

Is there a way to reset the list of users and there versions so i have a better count and know what people are running

  • #1229

Is is possible to make GC to automatically announce today's and maybe 2-3 days forward events using BIG LETTERS in the middle of screen? It can be done after syncronisation. The biggest problem is to force guild members to check calendar periodically.

  • #1230

My guild wants to use Automatic Channel Configuration but the problem is that new people constantly over-write the info by mistakingly clicking the Store Player Info checkbox and entering their own name in there.

It happens so often that it's obvious the UI is confusing on this topic. And we don't want to disable players' abilities to update their Player Note.

So... How about adding a little pop-up that comes up when someone clicks Store Info in Player Note that says "Doing this will reset your guild's channel data, only officers should do this. Are you sure?"

  • #1231

First of all let me state, I love your mod, and appreciate all of the time you have obviously devoted to its development.

Now, for my suggestion. In our guild, we currently post our weeks guild scheduled raids at a fixed time for the entire week, to allow everyone the chance to sign up. What I would like to see is the ability to post all of the months raids at the first of the month, so people can know what events are going to be held when, an entire month in advance. However if I do that now, people can sign up for those events at that time, if you added a feature that allowed an event creator to create a "locked" event that is viewable by all members, but they cant sign up for it, until it becomes "unlocked" automaticaly at a certain date, and time, entered by the event creator at the time he adds the event to the calendar, I feel this would be a great addition to the mod.

The way I imagine it, the calendar would display for example: 8:00 PM MC (locked) Soulcatcher (Unlocked at 5:00 PM on Aug 15)

You would need an additional display line on the events list for the day to display the additional information I believe.

Thank you for your time, and consideration.

  • #1232

My guild is having a lot of problems with this mod. For reasons unknown to us, people who sign up (including myself) have been randomly dropped from events.

The last time I was dropped, I was logged in as the character I was signing up, I waited for syncronisation to complete, and I made sure that another person in the channel was online. My name appeared in the Pending Requests and Changes column, however when I logged in that evening my name was gone.

It this a problem with the mod or is could we be using it incorrectly?

  • #1233

Have you verified that everyone is running an up-to-date version? In particular, the event organizer and especially if he's using multiple computers.

  • #1234

Everyone who has had problems is using 2.2 (the 2 people using out of date versions have been notified, but haven't had problems yet).

One of the event leaders does switch computers, but he disabled the mod on one of the computers. He and his girlfriend trade computers, so she will log in on the one with the calendar too, on her account, while he is logged in on the other. He is using version 2.2..

A different event leader had a problem where she logged in and a window popped up with the prompt "OtherPlayer has a more recent version of YourEvent, update now?" or something like that, and when she selected yes she lost all the event data and had to re-enter it manually from another player's version. We now all select "no" for that prompt... not sure if these issues are related though.

  • #1235

Is it possible to prepare via some kind of a script the file with new event which is automatically added/created when I run the game ? An example here is the DKPTable add-on in which one source file is just a stub which can be filled in (manually or via script) and then the data appear in the game.

The point behind it is to allow easy importing of the data from online schedulers.

Thanks for consideration and GJ on the addon !!

  • #1236

A different event leader had a problem where she logged in and a window popped up with the prompt "OtherPlayer has a more recent version of YourEvent, update now?" or something like that, and when she selected yes she lost all the event data and had to re-enter it manually from another player's version. We now all select "no" for that prompt... not sure if these issues are related though

Yes, the issues are very much related. If you receive that prompt then it means somebody somewhere (you or a friend) logged into your account on another computer and generated calendar data for your character. If you always say no and you're switching computers then you will always be losing data.

The player who said "yes" and lost data probably logged in from another machine running an old version of calendar or had a friend log into her account who was running an old version and the old version clobbered the network copy. When she then sync'd to that copy it clobbered her own copy as well.

When you get that message you have to think about your decision. If you use multiple computers then you should be accepting the network data. If you don't use multiple computers and you accept the network copy then you'll probably lose data because somebody did log into your account from another computer and generated calendar data for your character. On the other hand if you routinely switch between computers and you say "no" to the sync then you will constantly lose any changes you made from your other computer.

  • #1237

A few more problems have cropped up. In addition to dropping people, members are now losing events from their personal calendars, so that between about 5 officers we are all seeing some different events on different days (but we do still have about half the events in common). All of these events were visible to us at some point, and some of them we are still signed up for on other people's version.

The 2 people who log into their account from other computers only have Group Calendar installed on their main computer. Could this still be causing problems?

Also, we all have characters that are not in the guild, and thus do not automatically join the guild channel. Not sure if this would make any difference...

At this point, we are at a complete loss as to what could be causing people to lose data. Are there any other possibilities?

Edit: By the way, thanks for your help so far! Your replies have helped us to narrow things down a little, I think.

  • #1238

im still wondering if there is a way to clear the list of people and there versions so i can get a better count of who has what version and who all has the addon and linked to my calendar network thanks for everything.

  • #1239

[SOULCATCHER WROTE]: "if you added a feature that allowed an event creator to create a "locked" event that is viewable by all members, but they cant sign up for it, until it becomes "unlocked" automaticaly at a certain date, and time, entered by the event creator at the time he adds the event to the calendar, I feel this would be a great addition to the mod."

I am SO in support of seeing this!

Currently, our guild is creating manual raids and not using the drop down list of events. Using the drop down list seemed to be causing the raids to sync with everyone, then disappear from their calendar all together. Although the raid was still intact on the raid leaders calendar-viewer, nobody else to could see it and therefore panic insued on a daily basis.

By creating a manual/generic raid, we seem to have eliminated this problem. Although we still have several other members complaining about not seeing raids, not being able to sign up for raids, or signing up and having the raid somehow drop them, the system has continually improved. I wish I could provide more data for you to review. If you would like a copy of my SV folder, I will give you that via email - just PM with your email information and I'll send it off to you (if it will do any good that is).

Currently, I am looking into a web-based calendar system in combination with Raidspace that will be user-friendly enough to allow the average Joe to create a raid. I have been unsuccessful up to this point in finding something suitable for us. Having the above suggestion implimented into your calendar will be one more reason to keep using it - over switching back to online support.

I very much love your calendar fucntions and general use. But I also have to weigh in the impact of resource usage (memory), practicality (you must be signed ingame to sign up for raids), and lag contribution (all the information sync'ing back and forth, over and over again, all night long in a chat channel must have SOME sort of lag impact - although I've not tested this). The simplicity of it is awesome however! It is very easy for anyone to create a raid once shown how.
