HoloFriends FAQ

Q: Does this mod show when your friends were last logged on? I find that a very useful thing.
A: HoloFriends show you for your friends the date of last seen. As I know, its only possible to get the date of last login for guild members.

Q: Anybody know what checking the little boxes does?
A: There are little check-boxes in front of the player names (have a look at the screenshot "Display all friends"). If this box is checked, then the friend is included in the in-game friends list of WoW, else the friend is only included in the friends list of HoloFriends.
Friends in the in-game friends list of WoW are online updated by the game and you see the current status. But the in-game friends list has a limit of max. 100 friends.
Friends without the checked box (only included in the friends list of HoloFriends) are not monitored by the game. HoloFriends has to check the status of this friends using the "/who" command of WoW. But this check is slow, because the game force a time break between the execution of two "/who" commands.

Q: It says "update the status of friends (>100), not monitored online by WoW, with one button click" but that doesnt make it very clear.
A: Because of the slow scan with /who for the friends, not included in the in-game friends list of WoW (check-box at the friend not checked), a status update for this friends is not done automatically. You have to start the "/who Scan" manually by one click at the red button "/who Scan" in the upper right corner of the friends list window.
Keep in Mind: If the "/who Scan" is running, the /who command will not work.

Q: Why is "set focus" disabled in some pull down menus?
A: I had to disable it, because you would get an error message "function blocked by blizzard".
I included an option in the HoloFriends options panel to disable all menu-modifications of HoloFriends, to enable the "set focus" pull down menu entry.
The setup of the focus seem to be an overall protected function in the game. I have no understanding, why focus is not only a combat protected function, like the raid-window.
It is a feature of the game, that protected functions don't work, if there is any unsigned modification of its appearing window, in this case the pull down menu.

Q: Why is in a raid in combat the raidmember window empty, if HoloFriends is loaded?
A: It is a feature of the game, that protected windows don't work in combat, if there is any unsigned modification of its appearing window.
The raid-window is part of the friends-window, where also the friends list window is a part of it. And the friends list window is modified by HoloFriends. And HoloFriends is not signed by Blizz.

Q: Is there a way to keep the groups and membership in those groups in sync across your alts?
A: Yes.
You can use a faction wide friends list for some or all your alts, where all this chars using the same friends list in HoloFriends. Also the online friends list at the server is synchronized.
Or you can manually sync single groups of your alts.

The addition to the faction wide friends list and also the sync of single groups is accomplished at the share frame of HoloFriends. You find it over the lowermost middle button at the friends list window or by navigating to "Main menu -> Interface -> Addon's -> HoloFriends -> Share friends".

To add a char to the faction wide friends list, select it from the pull down button in the upper part of the window, and click at the add button in the lower part of the window, in the faction wide friends list section. Do not mark any entry in the lists.

To share/update a group with other chars of you, select the origin char from the pull down button on top of the lists. Mark the groups to share at the check button of the group in the left list. Mark your destination chars at the right list, and click at the "add"/"update"-button below the lists. "add" only add not existing friends to the groups of the destination chars and "update" synchronice the data of all friends of the selected groups with your selected destination chars.
There is an option at the HoloFriends options panel, which allow to mark removed friends at the origin group in the group of the destination chars. Friends are moved to other selected groups automatically, but not removed from the groups. You have to remove it manually.

Q: Thanks for the intro. Will this also keep the groups and members in sync or will i have to follow this proceduce each time i add a member to a group and or create new groups? It would be great if there was an option to keep these in sync without the "update" process you described.
A: The faction wide friends list feature of HoloFriends is what you are looking for. For its use, see the third paragraph of the description above.

The faction wide friends list is one single friends list for some or all your alts of one faction of the realm. There is no sharing anymore. All changes to the friends list are done for all chars, and the online friends lists at the WoW-server of your alts are synchronized at login.
But, there is a limit with this faction wide friends list feature: HoloFriends need priority over the friends lists of WoW. This means, that no other friends list addon will work together with HoloFriends for the chars of you, which are using the faction wide friends list feature.

Q: I wonder if it's possible to remove a friend from one character and then sync that remove to the other characters. Ie if I remove friend X from my char and then select the other chars will it remove the friend from their lists too?
A: If you are using the faction wide friends list, the online friends lists of your alts at the server are updated to the state of the HoloFriends friends list after you login to the alt with HoloFriends loaded. Thats, if you remove a friend from the faction wide HoloFriends friends list, it is removed automaticly from the servers friends list at login to your alt.

If you are using the normal mode with single friends lists for all your alts, you have to share the group in the share panel of HoloFriends to your alts. If one friend in the shared group was removed, it is optional only marked (strike through) at the friends lists of your alts, but not removed. You have to remove it manually after login to your alt. (Thats, to allow the support of other addons.)

Q: Is there a way to automatically sync your friends lists or a way to select all the names in the manual sync? Unless I am missing something, I've only been able to sync by clicking on each individual name one at a time.
A: You can also share whole groups by checking the group. After checking, the group is collapsed, but has still the check-box checked.

Q: My other friend list addon don't work like expected if I'm using HoloFriends too. Is HoloFriends not compatible?
A: Yes / No
HoloFriends should be compatible to other addons, if you are using single friends lists for every char of you.

The faction wide friends list feature of HoloFriends is not compatible with some other friend list addons. Mainly adding or removing friends by other addons is ignored by the faction wide friends list of HoloFriends, because the faction wide friends list need priority over the in-game friends list. Thats, if you make changes to the in-game friends list without HoloFriends loaded, the faction wide friends list of HoloFriends will undo it, the next time HoloFriends is loaded. So, if you play at different computers or don't use HoloFriends all time, you should not use the faction wide friends list feature of Holofriends.

Q: Some time ago I used HoloFriends with a faction wide friends list, but played without it for some time now. If I'm now load HoloFriends again, will it undo all my changes to the friends list I've done in the meantime?
A: If a faction wide friends list was not used for a time of more then 30 days, HoloFriends will ask you at login, if you want to load it and undo all other changes or start with your actual single in-game friends list. The faction wide friends list still exist, and you can access it over the sharing window.

Hello, i just started using this addon and it's a great addition to my collection. First and foremost, Thank You, for your time and effort here.

I do have some suggestion/questions though, that would make my life alot easier. Would it be possible to have the following features added as options:

    1. Display the character name in front of the real name for bnet users. Instead of having real name first. Most the time i go looking for their character names and not their real names and have them first would be ideal for myself. I'm sure others might find this option useful as well. I'd honestly love the ability to hide the real names entirely from the social window.

    2. Can we class color the character names for bnet users in the social window as well as their tooltip?

    3. Is it possible to display the bnet broadcast message just below each user in the social window? Optionally disabled/enabled?

Thanks for your time and consideration on these requests.

I developed a thought about the problem, and found a scenario which could let to this behavior.

HoloFriends is a part of the social window (which include the friends, who, guild, chat, and raid frame), by replacing the friends list. If one uses an addon which modifies the social window by removing its default buttons, the close button of the social window could be missing.

The defined key for the activation of the friends list window could still work to close the friends list. But also this key binding could be changed.

    Hi dawul,

I'm using HoloFriends by my self very often and I could not find any problem with adding a new friend to the friends list. But, there are some possibilities to add friends and much more combinations of HoloFriends options.

It could also be, that HoloFriends has problems in combination with an other addon.

So, at first, please, test HoloFriends as only loaded addon, by deactivating all other addons.

If the problem persists, describe in detail how you add friends to the friends list, and what options are activated in the options panel of HoloFriends.

For now I only changed the TOC to push the addon.
I'm still there, but work at other addons where I'm involved:

Since 4.0 some work was necessary to fix all the bugs with MetaMap (http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info13311-MetaMapv4.0.html), one of my favored addons, featuring some usefull world map enhancements.

Or the addon Yatlas (http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info19130-Yatlaspatch.html), showing the world map made from the minimap images. If you ever wanted to know where the GM-island is located: Move the northern edge of Teldrasil to the bottom of the window and then move two window sizes to the west. There it is.

Actually I'm still working at the addon AtlasMajorCities Enhanced (http://wow.curseforge.com/addons/atlasmajorcities-enhanced/), an extension to the well known addon Atlas.

But after this I start working at HoloFriends again.

I'm now using v0.453-3.3.5 for Chinese WOW, But why i can't add real-name friend, and how to add ?
  • #138
You add a RealID friend like other chars in the game, but you have to type the eMail address of the friend instead of the char name. The eMail address of the friend must be the one, your real friend is using to login to WoW.
But this don't realy add the friend to your friends list, it only send an invite to your real friend. Only if your real friend accept this invite, the friend shows up in your friends list. If the real friend don't accept, you see nothing and you get also no answer.

A really useful addon. But it seems that it's incompatible with NotesUNeed.
    http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/notes-uneed.aspx
    The incompatibility consists in:
    1) NuN "add a note" general button (at the top of Friends window) doing nothing for a selected friend (it should create a new note), and
    2) NuN "add a note" buttons not showing next to friends
An explanatory screenshot, which shows the Friends window view when HoloFriends is not loaded: http://tinypic.com/r/2rdduo3/7

Yes, HoloFriends is partly incompatible with NotesUNeed.

The faction wide friends list feature of HoloFriends is complete incompatible with NotesUNeed, because NotesUNeed also try to share friends and ignores. And modified notes by NotesUNeed are ignored in this mode. Thats, because both addons try to do the same, in this case, and this gives a conflict. So, do not add any of your chars to the faction wide friends list in HoloFriends.

I have not tested it, but I think, if you use a separate friends list for all your chars, NotesUNeed could work together with HoloFriends. But you have to consider the following things:
    - you should not share online handled friends or ignores with the HoloFriends share function, only HoloFriends offline friends and ignores. Use the NotesUNeed sharing function for online handled friends.
    - set the HoloFriends option, that in-game notes have priority.

To the NuN "add a note" buttons:
NotesUNeed add its buttons to the in-game friends list window, but HoloFriends is using its own window, only overlayed to the in-game friends window. Thats, the buttons are not there, and the general button is not working.
Solution: open the in-game friends/ignore window, by clicking again to the friends/ignore flag, if you already opend the HoloFriends friends/ignore window. There you should find all the NotesUNeed buttons.

Okay, thank you for the reply. Gotta see what I can do for myself about all of this :)

    Hello.
I would like to report two nasty bugs, which can be "fixed" all at once.
    1) You can't add yourself to your friend list. While this is ok itself, it causes a bug in HoloFriends: if you set up your alts on faction-wide list (for faster mails and such), these entries are disabled whenever you log on that character. So, if you add all your alts and log onto them, they will all be disabled in your faction list.
    2) Sometimes HoloFriends decides that the friend is no longer available and disables it (i have no idea why, probably due to latence of sorts). This happens on logon, it says something like "[Friend] online monitoring disabled". This makes me check my friend list (quite a large one since I keep raid guys there) and put checkboxes back.

The proposed "solution" is to add an option which will prevent HoloFrineds from unticking checkboxes, instead whining every logon that a friend %s can't be kept in online list.
  • #132
    1) Not HoloFriends remove your char from the (online) in-game friends list, the game itself is doing so. The unchecked box at the HoloFriends list show your only this fact.

Your own chars use always faster mails (defined by the game), also if not at any friends list.
Your chars are also included to the name substitution, i.e. in the mail box, by HoloFriends, also if not in any friends list.
The posibility to add your own chars to the HoloFriends list is implemented, to show you the location of all your chars.

    2) Its a bug of the game, that the server not always send the correct in-game friends list. This happen mostly during the load of the UI. If a friend vanish from the in-game friends list, HoloFriends in the faction wide friends list mode, try to add this friend again to it. Only if this give again the server response, that the friend don't exist, HoloFriends show this fact with the unchecked box.

So, HoloFriends show only the fact, that the server could not find the friends char at this time. If the server send later on the corrected list, because your friends char is found again, it is to late for HoloFriends, because the faction wide friends list need priority over the in-game friends list.

I know of this problem, but have no easy solution for it. An option to prevent the unticking of the checkbox is no good idea, because in this case HoloFriends would try to add the friend again, and again to the in-game friends list. If a friend is not found temporary for a short time, this would help. But if the friend is realy vanished, than the continue tries to add it again to the in-game list would significantly slow down all, and crash the game after a while.

For me, in most cases, I get the message, but the re-add of the friend helps.
However, I added an error report to HoloFriends project page, to search for a solution. But I'm busy in the moment, and don't know when I will find the time.
For now, you could use single friends lists, which don't have this problem. But with it, you have the work of sharing. Deside for you self, what is more work.

I can suggest an easy counter to the re-apply problem. Only do the re-applying friends a couple times per logon session with an interval of at least 30 seconds, then stop trying to apply this friend to server list, but don't do the unchecking and warn in chat.

Its been a long time since I've used this Mod after it wasn't updated and found Friends4Ever. Well that stopped working but good to see this one back. I looked over features a few times and didn't see anything that stated if this mod still shows when friend deleted their toons who it was who deleted. Does this add-on still show you which friend deleted themselves? That 'Friend no longer exists' is annoying.
