About MikScrollingBattleText

  • Version 5.7.131 fixes the font changing issue introduced by Patch 5.4.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Before posting a question, please see the FAQ list at MSBT's portal site.

MSBT is designed to be an extremely lightweight, efficient, and highly configurable mod that makes it easier to see combat information by scrolling the information on the screen in separate, dynamically creatable scroll areas. It is a replacement for Blizzard's Floating Combat Text and Damage output.

  • Lightweight and efficient design.
  • Scroll incoming damage/heals, outgoing damage/heals, and notifications in separate configurable scroll areas on the playing field.
  • Display player and pet cooldown completion alerts.
  • Display loot alerts with a total of how many are now in inventory.
  • Add triggers that will allow you to show notifications based on a variety of conditions.
  • Assign a sound file to play for events/triggers.
  • Dynamically create new scroll areas and assign any event/trigger to them.
  • Customize the position, size, animation style, enabled state, font style, font size, font outline, and opacity for each of the scroll areas.
  • Customize each individual event's color, font style, font size, font outline, opacity, output message, enabled state, and scroll area.
  • Set "Master Font" settings that will be inherited by all of the scroll areas and the events in them unless they are overridden at the scroll area or event level.
  • Merge AoE data into one event with cumulative damage/healing done with number of normal and crits specified.
  • Show overhealing amounts against yourself or party/raid members.
  • Color unit names according to their class.
  • Color damage amounts according to damage type.
  • Show partial effects (resists, absorbs, vulnerabilities, etc) colored according to type.
  • Filter output information with a full suite of spam controls.
  • Load on demand options.
  • For mod developers:
    • Output your own scrolling messages with the MikSBT.DisplayMessage function instead of having to create your own frame and animation code. You can also use your own font by first registering it with MSBT via the MikSBT.RegisterFont function.
    • Create custom animation styles.
    • See the included API.html file for reference information.

I think this issue might be caused by the addition of absorbs to default in game battle text; they weren't included prior to 5.4. I've tested multiple options and the only font that cannot be changed is the one that relates to absorbs. I've tried making a custom variable for it, but I haven't been able to get it to work. The change log doesn't show anything other than a TOC change for 5.4.

  • #3728

I'm also having this problem.  My selected fonts (Nimrod and Adventure) are saved somewhere, as they are already selected when I go into the master font settings.  All I do to "fix" it on log in is open the master font settings, change nothing, hit "save", then reloadui.

  • #3726

The temporary fix is to copy your preferred font over top of porky.ttf.

  • #3725

    Vegidio may be onto something.

I just wanted to post that I do not believe the issue is tied directly to user profiles - I have no profiles set up except the default, and I still have the Porky Problem on all my characters.

Granted, they're all using the default profile.

  • #3724

    This is what noticed:

    1. Last Tuesday, on patch day, I installed the new version of MSBT and logged on two characters and they both had the font problem.

    2. I installed the new version of MSBT with the partial fix yesterday and the font problem didn't disappear on the same two characters that I logged on last Tuesday, BUT the problem seems to be gone on all my other characters that I logged for the first time today after the patch.

I hope this helps to identify the bug.

I believe the continuing font problem may have something to do with user profiles.

When I changed to default profile, it seemed to allow the change and maintaine it between logins.

    Hope this helps.

  • #3723

I tried copying the default to another and it behaved the same way.  I didn't try making a new profile (and hopefully that's not the solution).

I'd like to echo this. I couldn't figure out why I had no font problems on my DPS characters, but my two healers kept resetting to Porky; only after reading this comment did I realise that my DPS chars use the Default profile, whereas I have a separate Healer profile for my healer chars.

I would suggest this is a likely reason behind the error.

    HELP me pls

updated the the problem still persists, I can not see the loot in the static window. perhaps because the use of the Italian language? I do not know if I put the English client everything works. any ideas? I had the same problem with the previous patch, and I had already made a post but I had no response from anyone. with another addon called parrot everything works, they show me the loot. and just a matter of MSBT then I supposeI hope to fix the problem, I will not change I love this addon. tx

  • #3717

Font problem persists in the new version. ReloadUI did not solve it for one character, but did solve it for the next. The font resets to Porky if you logout or restart the game.

Going to try the "replace desired Font's name with Porky" fix that was working for last version.

Sorry to report but the font problem(s) persist in the new version

    Fonts STILL not working

I got the update today, but the problem with "Porky" still being the default font when you log in still exists. Doing /reload after you select your prefered font(s) fixes it though. Just wish you didn't have to do this just to get it working.

  • #3713

Alright, so let's get more specific about the specific steps/issue then, because the issue that I saw is now working correctly for me.

So let me recap on the specifics of what the issue I saw and fixed are:

    1. Launch the options dialog (/msbt)
    2. Go to a font settings dialog (click Master Fonts, Scroll Areas->Font Settings, or Event->Font Settings)
    3. Choose a new font -- At this point, as of Patch 5.4 and prior to MSBT 5.7.131, choosing a new font did not update the font preview text.  As of MSBT 5.7.131, this is resolved.
    4. Save the settings -- At this point, as of Patch 5.4 and prior to MSBT 5.7.131, saving the new font did not change the font of the actual text that scrolls.    As of MSBT 5.7.131, this is resolved.

I have had a ton of reports through various channels that the above is working correctly now.  It sounds like there is another issue at play here and we're going to have to figure out.

So, with the above level of specificity, please give me the exact steps and behavior being exhibited.  For example, after saving a newly selected font and doing a /reloadui, does the new font not persist for you?

Also, per this post (, Blizzard messed with the saved variables.  Is that the issue you're seeing?

Finally, something else to try, if you disable all other AddOns, do you see still the issue (this will help rule out a conflict with another AddOn)

    Well, I did the following:

    • Installed new version. Was working pretty much like before.
    • Tried changin fonts. Noticed font preview wasn't updating. All fonts defaulted back to porky.
    • Changing back to my previous font didn't work, it still was using porky.
    • Reload UI worked to update the font preview, but it still was using porky.
    • Restarted game. Same results as before.
    • Uninstalled addon via curse client and cleared saved variables. Made sure that there wasn't anything left in the addons and wtf folder.
    • Reinstalled addon.
    • Working exactly as described before.
    • Disabled every other addon except MSBT. Same results.

The only thing left for me is deleting ALL saved variables and using a fresh install. But I'm not gonna do that.

Good luck fixing the addon, no rush there tho. I stil can change the font name in the fonts folder :p
