About MyRolePlay

MyRolePlay is a roleplaying UI AddOn for World of Warcraft, developed by Etarna at It lets you make a roleplaying “profile” about your character that other users of MyRolePlay (and other compatible “MSP” RP AddOns) can see in the tooltip and a more detailed window. It’s fast, light, and powerful.

  • Spot other roleplayers at a glance, see which RP AddOns they are using, and get a quick overview of their character in the tooltip!
  • Change your character’s name; add a last name—or whatever you wish!
  • Mark your preferred style of roleplaying (casual, full–time, beginner, or a custom style…), or your status (in character, out of character, being a storyteller…)
  • Exercise your creativity further—describe your character’s appearance! Eye colour, height, weight…
  • Give people a taste of your character’s story, if you wish—add biographical information like their age, hometown, birthplace, and maybe even some tidbits of history to make people hungry to discover more by interacting with your character and roleplaying with you? Or hide others’ biography, if you prefer to discover that kind of thing through interaction.

What if your character’s appearance changes, say when they wear different clothes, or shapeshift into different forms? No problem: simply add another ‘profile’, and just change the fields you want to be different in that alternate profile. Select freely between the default and alternate profiles to suit your character’s mood, dress, form and so on! If you name a profile after an equipment set (Blizzard’s, ItemRack or Outfitter) or a form (druid, shaman, warlock, priest or worgen) MyRolePlay can even automatically change profile for you when you switch!

MyRolePlay has tremendous scope for creativity. It’s extremely fast and flexible—a roleplaying AddOn that lets you express your character however you wish! Use it as an aid to roleplaying, fleshing out your character’s “feel” or just helping you stumble into more roleplay… how you choose to use it is up to you!

Editing your profiles

Bring up the Character Sheet (“C” by default), and select the new MyRolePlay tab underneath. Click on a field to edit it.

Alternate profiles management: + to add a new alternate profile, - to delete or clear the profile, R to rename it. Fields that appear dimmed out are ‘inherited’ from the default profile—simply select to Change the fields you want to modify from that.

Further options (such as a choice of units to display height/weight) can be found in the Interface Options, AddOns tab, under MyRolePlay.

Where can I see other people’s details?

When you mouseover someone who has MyRolePlay (or another compatible roleplaying addon), you’ll see some of the extra roleplaying details they added in the tooltip, plus if they use MRP or another RP AddOn such as GHI (GryphonHeart Items) or T (Tongues), which is a handy hint that they're a roleplayer!

Want more information about their character than the tooltip provides, like the full description or history (where applicable)? Target them and click on the “MRP” information button that appears by the target frame, to browse their profile in a resizeable description window. (Or set a key combination in Key Bindings to bring up that window, or: /mrp show <charactername> or just /mrp show when you have them targeted.) You can target yourself and view your own profile as it appears to others in there, if you like, and if you want to move the MRP button, right-click to unlock it, drag it where you want it, and right–click again to lock it in place.

(Users are reminded that your RP profiles are public content which may be seen by other players and Blizzard, and are subject to the Terms of Use, and policies of the realm(s) you play on. Please have fun and remember to exercise your creative freedom responsibly and respectfully.)

- Removed "of" from House section of the profile (Same goes with the Italian version)
- Put a visual character limit on the Titles section: Now allotted 44 characters on the viewing window. Still at 77 at the hover window.

I'm sorry it's not much else, but I've been extremely busy for the past couple of months. With Lent and the fact we're remodeling the house by ourselves, it's proven to be a rather interesting time for the family. I figured I shouldn't upload another "just making sure it's updated" thing without having SOMETHING in there.

    Hey Etarna,

I love MRP, I use it all the time. But there is a bug I believe that keeps destroying my MRP Profiles. I recently made a monk and deciced to make his MRP, I log out for a couple hours, come back, and the entire description is gone. I've rewritten it four times and I'm getting really frustrated. Please fix this bug, thanks!

As stated a few times below, WoW doesn’t save AddOn settings if you crash or force-quit WoW—and that’s beyond any AddOn’s control (the WoW client saves only when you exit cleanly). That includes your descriptions.

If you’re getting crashes of the WoW client, there’s not much I can do to help (error #132 is almost always a hardware fault, for example). Try getting into an inn, editing your profile there, and do an /exit once it’s complete. That should save your profiles and settings in the MyRolePlay.lua file found in each character’s SavedVariables, under the WTF folder, and they should load just fine.

    Hey Etarna,

Love MRP. The interface is clean (if a bit cramped) and it really looks seamless with WoW - I sometimes forget the MRP tab isn't a default system.

One thing I'd kind of like to see, though I recognize it would be a good amount of work, is some way to implement a sort of "details" system. If you're familiar with MU*s, I'm talking like the ability to have cinfo tags. Essentially, you can do /cinfo <character name> to get the profile, which would list tags that you could query via /cinfo <character name> <tag> to get detailed information.

The main thing I can see being a problem is that trying to add more features to the current window would be a mess, and as mentioned already, it's more than a small undertaking. While I have no experience with making modules for addons, would you be adversed to the idea of me looking at trying to make one that would plug into MRP for this feature (Namely, adding a tab to the MRP profile window)?

  • #719

I'm not sure I could think of a clean UI to do that, 5.1 should be a little more plugin-friendly (as the editor, tooltip and profile window code will be somewhat rewritten).

And you're right, the editor in particular is a bit cramped—I don’t think there’s any space to add another field and keep it sensible.

Did you have any ideas on how might be a good way to present that?

Perhaps tabs on the right side, like the spellbook or guild bank tabs? Make them parented to the right side of the frame, so when it's expanded for editing, they follow the edge of the window. If you wanted to unclutter the current frame, you could split it into the two tabs that show up when viewing a profile?

That said, I love MRP's simplicity, and too many tabs and the like would move it towards TRP2's "BUTTONS EVERYWHERE" design model.

Hey there. Great addon by the way.

Just an idea or suggestion, do you think there is a way to make a slash command to quickly change your Currently tab in MRP? For example...

/MRP Currently Sitting with his back against the wall, eating a donut.

In the currently tab, it'll show this instead of opening and retyping it every time if we frequently use this.

Hi! First, thanks for the cool addon.

Now, the actual problem. I have admittedly not checked earlier comments for it, so I apologize for being a bit, well, lazy. When players are using TRP2, they sometimes fill out a lot of text in "Current". Infact so much that MRP doesn't show all the text. Is there a way I can work around this and view all of the text they have written in current? I really really don't want to switch to TRP2 as it has a billion terrible features that no ones ever use anyways.

Not yet, but I plan to have a solution for that. (Unfortunately, it involves a significant rewrite of the tooltip code.)

I'm surprised no one has said this yet but MyRp is causing certain new functions of the game to not function.  When this happens the pointer freezes as the new type of icon and only relogging and disabling the MyRp add-on will allow the player to proceed.

The new interface actions is the "hand grabbing" interface and the new central trigger menu interface.

Hand-grabbing comes up in the Jade Mines in the Jade Forest where you have to mouse-over piles of rubble to free pandas or grasp a vine to untangle your crop.

The central trigger menu first came up in the Stormstout Brewery instance, in which you grab a hammer and then hit the central trigger icon to smash vermin.  It is used also in the Shado-pan Monestary while fighting the last boss.  The freezing of the trigger resulted in many deaths before I turned off the add-on.

More often than not, the game stops me, and tells me to disable MyRP nearly everytime I try to use it.  Any word on how to fix this?  Thanks for the hard work!

I’ll take a look… can you identify which frame is being tainted? (/framestack, if it’s still in, should toggle some debug information about where you’re mousing over and what it actually is.)

There are a couple of bugs in WoW 5.x still that can cause things to be falsely “tainted”. It might be one of those, as MRP doesn’t do anything with those elements; nothing with any bars or buff frames; nothing with secure action frames; and nothing with the 3D world (no AddOn can). Still, I’ll try and take a look to see if it’s something I can help with…

I'm having a problem where all my data for my profile disappears upon logging out. When I log back back in, the information I put down disappears. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if there is a way to fix it. I am running no other addons at this time. Thank you.

  • #712

AddOns have no control over whether WoW saves their settings correctly—it’s all up to the WoW client itself. They are only saved when the client exits cleanly.

Please make sure that WoW can write to the directory it’s in, particularly the WTF subdirectory, and that it is cleanly exiting (WoW will not save any settings if it crashes). It may be helpful to grant it permission, or to run the Launcher as an Administrator (once).

MyRolePlay shows tooltip on buff frames aswell as on my unitframes, so I can't read the buffs tooltip anymore. IT shows normal when I use Blizzard's own buff frames, while I use Raven for tooltip. Is this a possible fix?

First off I want to say that I Love MRP ot's a great Addon, But sadly I have been having problems between the UI and the Addon. I understand that MoP is in fact still very buggy, but since I disabled the Addon I have been having a lot less problems, I did read that someone said they were having problems the MRP interfering with the glyphs and I can confirm that there is an issue there. I sure that there will always be problems between the Addon and the UI until blizzard get all the bugs worked out.

  • #701

I've decided to use MRP as TRP2 isn't going to be updated to use Pandaren as far as I can tell. Is there going to be any custom buffs or personality modifiers in future versions? I'd feel far happier with using it if these were added. :)
