About No CardBoard Wing Sounds

The Celestial Steed and the Flameward Hippogryph have something in common: their wings sound like someone waving a piece of cardboard around. As a result I've barely ridden my Celestial Steed since I got it and don't care much about riding my Flameward Hippogryph, even though it's one of the nicest looking mounts in the game. This tiny sound addon swaps the cardboard sounds for rich wingflaps more like the Windriders and Gryphons.

To Install: Extract the "Data" folder contained in this zip file into your World of Warcraft folder. This will create a folder called "Sound" under (inside) the game's "Data" folder. When the game runs it will substitute any sounds it finds there for equivalent sounds in the game. (See screenshot images for illustration.) Do not use the Curse Client Auto-installer. It is a known problem that it does not handle sound mod addons properly.

To Uninstall: Rename or delete the "Sound" folder under (inside) your game's "Data" folder.

Notes on Installation: Zip/Unzip programs vary in how they work. The end result must be that a folder called "Sound" is created under (inside) your game's "Data" folder. Restart game after installation. (If your Unzip program is confusing you, try unzipping to your Desktop and then simply copying the "Sound" folder to your WoW "Data" folder.)

Never had that request.  I suppose if I could find which sound they use for that, I could fix it.  I'll see if I can get to that this weekend.

OK, perhaps everyone but me knows the answer, but is this OK to do and not a violation of the TOS?  I'd like to get rid of that sound but I am a bit nervous about addons that make changes other than in the addon folder.

    Am I worried over nothing?

Yes your concerns are unfounded but I'm glad you expressed them here.  In the first place, the good people of Curse wouldn't allow us to offer sound mod addons on this website if it were against the TOS.  They have to stay on good terms with Blizzard so each and every addon you see on Curse.com has been approved by a Curse admin before it could be displayed.

In the second place, Blizzard specifically designed WoW to check to see if a folder named "Sound" resides in the "Data" folder and to replace in-game sounds with the sounds it finds there.  So just as Blizzard made us an "addons" folder to place regular addons in, they also made the game check for alternate sounds in the "Sounds" folder.

My first sound mod addon has been published on Curse since 2008 and it's still doing well here.  Lately I've added about 18 more addons and I'm still working on some new ones.

I'm so glad you asked this question though.  This may have been a concern of others who didn't take the time to leave a message.  You've done us all a service and I'll include a mention of the TOS question in my descriptions of the sound mod addons from now on.

Thanks for explaining how the rules work and being patient with my ignorance.  Looking forward to quieting some sounds in the game now.

Museraen331 has done us a favor by pointing out that it was confusing when I mentioned something being "under" a folder as opposed to being "INSIDE" a folder.  For an old programmer like me, it means the same because the folder tree structure is hierarchical.  However, the lesson for me was to make sure to state clearly what I mean and you will note in my installation instructions now that I state that something is "inside" a folder in addition to being "under" it.

    Thank you Museraen331!  Lesson learned!

For the first time, I'm truly enjoying my Flameward Hippogryph and my Celestial Steed.  Both of them were afflicted with a wing flap sound that seemed designed to emulate a large piece of cardboard being waved around in the wind.  At last I can sail through the sky on these mounts to the sound of gentle wing flaps.  Music to my ears.

Let me know what you think.
