About _NPCScan.Overlay

NPCScan.Overlay is an addition to _NPCScan that adds map overlays for rare mob patrols. When you search for a rare in _NPCScan, _NPCScan.Overlay will show where it patrols until you find it. It works similarly to keithgabryelski's Rare Spawn Overlay's , but supports the minimap and has a much smaller download size, along with a few new features.

Special thanks to Rare Spawn Overlay's patrol paths and Routes minimap drawing code for inspiration!

Note: _NPCScan.Overlay can integrate with _NPCScan if you have installed it, but make sure to keep both up to date if you do use both!

World Map

In addition to drawing paths on the World Map, _NPCScan.Overlay adds a key to a corner of the window with each rare's name. It only appears in zones that have rare maps, like Netherstorm as seen in the screenshot. Hovering over a mob's name in the key will cause the mob's path on the map to start flashing. If you need to read something under the key, it can be toggled by Clicking on the Key Toggle button on the map. The key can be repositioned by just moving your mouse over top of it while holding the shift key and the key will jump to a different corner.

Most map mods like Atlas will inherit the key and overlays from this module. Even Carbonite's map display will show them.

Battlefield Minimap

The small “Battlefield Minimap” (AKA the “Zone Map”) also shows mob paths.

All shapes and sizes of minimaps are supported. Rotating minimaps work fine as well.

One feature not shown in the screenshot is a thinner 100 yard range ring around your character. It helps you gauge _NPCScan's detection range, so you can sweep through zones more effectively. This option can be found in the Minimap subsection of the options panel, detailed below.

_NPCScan.Overlay's options can be found under _NPCScan's main options menu, under _NPCScan > Overlay or as its own entry of _NPCScan.Overlay if _NPCScan isn't installed. This panel can be opened with the “/npcscanoverlay slash command, or “/overlay” for short.

The “Always show all paths” checkbox at the top of the pane overrides the instructions of NPC tracking mods like _NPCScan to hide unused paths, and always displays all known paths instead.

The rest of the configuration pane lists each map display's options. You can enable/disable each map from here, as well as configure individual settings for them.

Each map display can have its overall transparency set independently with the “Alpha” slider, so that it doesn't obscure the maps themselves.

I enabled "Scan for rares you dont need" and now i can't disable it.

Basicly it shows ALL rares in the zone instead of just the 2-3 i need.

Edit: Figured it out, "Always show all paths" apparantly overwrites "Scan for completed Achivement NPCs"   Should put in a option below "Always show all paths" to not overwrite sayd option.

For the love of god, give me a setting, or remove Alani from the overlay ... idgaf what her path is. she's always up and can always be seen.

I saw in the changes that carbonite is now supported, however it still doesn't seem to be working.  Is there anything special I need to do in either this addon or carbonite to get the addon to actually show up on the map.  The mob window pops with the loud alert, but there isn't any indication or tracers on minimap or large map.

    Thanks in advance,

Any chance you could add the paths for the rare hunter pets in as well.  Tabbing out to try to match maps and then go back only to lose track of those blasted footprints is giving me migraines.  Took me about an hour to finally get that damn goat a few weeks ago and he has the smallest path.

Great addon too since I didn't say that right off the top.

can u Just remove Alani from the map, its not really important or helpful for players needing to even find it with 10 Skyshards. Its not hard to find and is really just making the zone map look like a place mat colored on by my kid at Denny's

A slight blooper. Vale of Eternal Blossoms, rare mob Alani, shows up on the overlay list as its npc number (64403) instead of the name. Otheriwse no issues! Thanks for updating!

Latest Update with NPC Overlay and Carbonite 5.053 are Incompatible.
Is there anything I can do to adjust this?

  • #615

uninstall carbonite since the developer stopped the project

  • #617

Carbonite is being updated. The original authors are no longer playing so they turned the project over to Rythal.    His latest update to Carbonite available thru Curse  was uploaded 10/21/12

Quoting Saiket's last and most recent post on any of his addons.

"I wish I had more time to respond to comments here and at WoWInterface, but my schedule and priorities have changed a lot since I first published my mods.  For future reference for anyone interested, I do reliably respond to feature requests and bug reports on my Google Code issue tracker here:

As for your main question, you did delete the right file.  Relative to your WoW folder, the cache always resides in the same sub-folder no matter which operating system you use.  I wish the cache was easier to clear as much as you do, but add-ons don't have the ability to help."

    - Saiket (

I've held back from stating my next point for a couple weeks as it's no doubt going to be met with.. distain, opposition perhaps.. that and I feel hypocritical suggesting people do what I myself am unable to do at this time; but perhaps donation's could help "free up time for him." If you get what I mean.. _NPCScan has over $560 raised in donations--while I've watched this one's donations not move by even a dollar in the weeks I've waited. Maybe just a dollar here or there appearing in his bank account would help this come to attention.. or not.. no promises.

also looks like he has it updated already, in trunk on his googlecode page, has all mop rares. bet it's in curse queue just awaiting approval

  • #604

I actually gave him 20 dollars worth of curse points the other day for his hard work. I hope for an update soon. such work is to be appricated.

  • #602

Overlay is not showing up. The scan itself works fine it is only the overlay that is not showing the rare paths.
