About _NPCScan

If you care at all about my wishes, you won't download this AddOn from SolidIce: They are leeching it from the site I actually choose to put it on.

_NPCScan & Warlords

Due to changes in how the game caches mobs in WoD, it is looking like _NPCScan will no longer be able to auto detect non-Vignette mobs. Due to this the only way to find pre-MoP rares via _NPCScan will be via mouse over or the new dynamic target macro keybind being added. The new keybind will trigger a /targetexact …” macro that updates with tracked mobs based on the zone you are currently in. Vignette mobs will still automatically trigger an alert when the mob gets in range, and should work more reliably due to updates to the Vignette API.

V6.x Changes
  • Cache Scanning Removed - Due to changes in the way WoW cache mobs, NPCScan can no longer auto alert when mobs are nearby like it use to.
  • Dynamic TargetExact Macro Keybind - NPCScan now has a keybind you can set that will try to /exacttarget tracked mobs. This macro will dynamically update based on the zone you are in and which mobs are being tracked. Updated Vignette Alerts - Vignette Alerts are now more reliable and show the actual mob when detected the majority of time.
V5.x Changes
  • Due to changes in how the addon stores data, some settings might get reset when updating.
  • The default alert is suppressed while on flight paths by default. If a mob is found, the whisper sound effect will play and the mob & location will be placed in the chat log. You can turn this off from the settings.
  • _NPCScan now includes all rare mobs in the game.
  • The "One of Many", "Timeless Champion" & "Champions of Lei Shen" Achievements have been added.
  • Rare Mobs and Tameable Mobs have their own tabs now.
  • Custom mobs have been added for the Ghostly Pandaren Fisherman & Craftsman.
  • Individual mobs can be removed from their tabs to stop tracking them.

Details

Vignettes

NPCScan now tracks "vignettes". These are the little skulls appear on the minimap, that denote rare mobs. This is a beta feature and is disabled by default. Enabling this feature will alert you to a rare that's within minimap range, without any worries about having to clear your cache. When you get an alert you will be shown a target button similar to the standard mob alert, letting you know that a vignette mob was detected. Clicking on the target button will try and target the mob.

“Found” Alert

When a rare mob is found, _NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying an animated Targeting Button. To get a feel for what this alert looks and sounds like, try the “Test Found Alert” button in the addon's main Interface Options panel. (See the Options section below.)

Targeting Button

When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the most-recently-found mob.  You can also bind a key to hit this button. If the default button position isn't to your liking, you can move it while holding your CTRL key.

Note: The button cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button will appear after you leave combat. You will still hear the alert however, and the name of the mob will appear in your chat log.

Options

_NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. This panel includes a “Test Found Alert” button, various ways to customize the alert sound, and an option to suppress cache warning messages on log-in. New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia-type addons.

Search List

The list of mobs that _NPCScan searches for can be modified easily through the Interface Options panel, however it comes pre-configured with most rare mobs.; To access the mob list, type “/npcscan”. Grayed out NPCs in a list aren't being searched for, either because they're cached or not needed for their achievement.

The first tab available lists Custom NPCs that you can enter or remove manually. NPCs that are already cached show a red “X” in the first column. You can add or remove Custom NPCs with the [+] and [-] buttons at the bottom right.

All other tabs control achievements like Bloody Rareand Frostbitten. These tabs show an additional column on the right with green check marks for completed achievement mobs. You may enable or disable tracking each achievement with its tab's checkbox.

To remove non custom mobs from a tab, click on the mob that you want to remove and then click on the "Remove" button. This will remove the selected mob from the current tab and add it to the Ignore List Tab. If you ever want to restore a Ignored Mob, select it from the "Ignore List" tab, click the "Remove" button and it should be added back to its original tab.

The “Search for completed Achievement NPCs” checkbox at the top left of the pane allows you to keep looking for mobs you no longer need for achievements.

Finding NPC IDs

A mob's NPC ID is its unique identification number, and it can be found on sites like WowHead or WowDB For example, search for the mob “Dirkee” on WowHead and go to the mob's page.  That page's URL will look like

http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=32500

32500 is Dirkee's NPC ID.

    Feature Request:

Is there any way this could search for objects as well.  Would love to use NPCScan to track Lost&Found objects as well.

She was not even visible.. My NPC Scan went off for another Rare Elite in the Outland and that rare was nowhere in site also. I think it is glitched or something. >.>

Well I deleted the addon and re-installed it. I also noticed that when it goes off I am on a flight path. I always return to the location it goes off. After re-installing it I went back to the location and Doomslayer was nowhere to be found. I couldn't even see him visually.

Just wanted to add that I have also had this problem and I believe it has to do with the cross-realm zones. Not sure if anything can be done to prevent NPCscan from scanning while on a flight path but if so this would help prevent these false positives as odds are good that the flight paths are traveling through some kind of wierd non-player environment which would explain why the rare's are alive and not dead.

    Move _NPCScan Frame?

Is there an option to somehow move the frame that shows the NPC with the NPC's model and the ribbon behind the NPC's name? If not, there should really be a way implemented.

  • #1962

if you use the test found alert button in the options you can then drag the pop up with your mousewhile holding ctrl.

  • #1952

i love this addon but is there a way to actually show in the map where is the NPC found? is really hard to localize them some times..

  • #1950

Great addon, I have been using this addon for a few yrs now.  thanks for making it.  the reason I posting is to see if you can add the Ghostly Pandaren Fisherman #64004 & Ghostly Pandaren Craftsman #64191 to the data base.

It seem as if I can never get these 2 rare spawn's for the Hidden Treasure achv. questline. I've checked on their location at least a few hundred times to no avail.

I've tried to add these NPC's to data base via the manual method but it doesnt seem to work .  Again thanks for making this addon.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but there is another way to keep your rare alerts without having to delete your cache. Simply change your creaturecache file to a read only file.

That's it! Now you'll never have to delete anything, change a script, write a batch file.

  • #1948
    Clearing cache on a Mac

If you are on Mac and know how to use the Applescript Editor, you can delete the cache file each time you start WoW by doing:

set cachefile to POSIX file "/Applications/World of Warcraft/Cache/WDB/enUS/creaturecache.wdb"
    tell application "Finder"
if exists cachefile as file then
            delete file cachefile
        end if
    end tell
    tell application "Finder"
        empty the trash
    end tell
tell application "World of Warcraft Launcher" to activate

You may have to adjust the path accordingly if you didn't install it in the default location.  You can also skip the launcher and just tell application "World of Warcraft" to activate and you'll go right to the login screen. This empties the Trash so removes those lines if that is something you want to do manually.

Thanks for such a great addon! I have a request, currently on my mini map the item "Kafa'kota Bush" is showing up as nodes even though I no longer have the quest to find them. I checked the filters and there is no listing to remove this item from being tracked. I was wondering if this could be added so I can remove it and no longer see it on my minimap. Interesting on my big map there is no trace of this item. it is just on the mini map.

    Thanks for your help =)

  • #1944

For the love of God - please please please make it quit going off when the rare is DEAD!

  • #1951

yimanoy You cant make it not go off when the rare is dead. The creature is loaded into cache regardless.

  • #1943

I'm getting this error when hovering my mouse over some mobs in pandaria.

    Independant Databasing

_NPCScan would be a lot better to use if you separated all of the IDs into one big database.lua file as oppose to in the actual coding as it stands now..

The functions in the code only create a default DB to get people started. They aren't actually a DB. The DB itself is in your character's SavedVariable file. Having the DB character based rather than hard linked to the program is far better than a master DB as it allows people to customize what NPCs they track per character. So you don't have to be bothered by a rare Hunter Pet when playing your Pally but can still get an alert for than NPC when you're on your Hunter.

The intent of the program is that you populate it with whatever NPCs you find important rather than to track every rare or notable NPC in the game at all times.
It'd actually be better if it didn't have any NPCs included at all. But that would lead to the author being bombarded with "I installed it but it's not doing anything!! FIX IT!!" complaints. So he's provided the best compromise possible by including only the most commonly tracked rares such as those required for achievements.

If you want a master DB (or a custom one) however, you can use http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/npcscanex to easily facilitate that.
