About _NPCScan

_NPCScan helps you find rare mobs through the use of dynamic target macros, mouse over alerts and for Vignette mobs proximity. Once a mob is found by one of these methods an on screen alert is displayed, in addition to an audio alert.

_NPCScan & Warlords

Due to changes in how the game caches mobs in WoD, it is looking like _NPCScan will no longer be able to auto detect non-Vignette mobs. Due to this the only way to find pre-MoP rares via _NPCScan will be via mouse over, nameplate, or the new dynamic target macro keybind being added. The new keybind will trigger a /targetexact …” macro that updates with tracked mobs based on the zone you are currently in. Vignette mobs will still automatically trigger an alert when the mob gets in range, and should work more reliably due to updates to the Vignette API.

V6.x Changes
  • Cache Scanning Removed - Due to changes in the way WoW cache mobs, NPCScan can no longer auto alert when mobs are nearby like it use to.
  • Dynamic TargetExact Macro Keybind - NPCScan now has a keybind you can set that will try to /exacttarget tracked mobs. This macro will dynamically update based on the zone you are in and which mobs are being tracked.
  • Updated Vignette Alerts - Vignette Alerts are now more reliable and show the actual mob when detected the majority of time.

If you have a question check the FAQ, or a problem create a ticket

If you have a question/comment about _NPCScan.Overlay please post it in it's comment section.

Dynamic Target Keybind

NPCScan now includes a keybinding that will trigger a stored dynamic target macro. Each time it is pressed, the keybind will trigger a /targetexact <mob name> for every tracked mobs in the current zone you are in, in addition to any custom added mobs. This macro will be auto updated based on the zone you are currently in. To access this feature, just set a keybind under the Key Bindings->Addons->_NPCScan->Dynamic Target Macro section. Note: To search via the keybind, you will need to continuously push the bind. Pushing it once will only trigger it once, it does not auto scan like it did Pre WoD.

NPCScan now tracks "vignettes". These are the little skulls appear on the minimap, that denote rare mobs. This is a beta feature and is disabled by default. Enabling this feature will alert you to a rare that's within minimap range, without any worries about having to clear your cache. When you get an alert you will be shown a target button similar to the standard mob alert, letting you know that a vignette mob was detected. Clicking on the target button will try and target the mob.

If you have nameplates turned on, NPCScan now has the ability to trigger alerts off them. This method is not completely reliable as it has to rely on name comparison, so if mob name that NPCScan has does not match it will not trigger an alert. Also the range is limited as you need to get close enough to a mob to have the game display its name plate.

Addons that modify nameplates may interfere with this.

“Found” Alert

When a rare mob is found, _NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying an animated Targeting Button. To get a feel for what this alert looks and sounds like, try the “Test Found Alert” button in the addon's main Interface Options panel. (See the Options section below.)

Targeting Button

When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the most-recently-found mob. You can also bind a key to hit this button. If the default button position isn't to your liking, you can move it while holding your CTRL key.

Note: The button cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button will appear after you leave combat. You will still hear the alert however, and the name of the mob will appear in your chat log.

_NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. This panel includes a “Test Found Alert” button, various ways to customize the alert sound, and an option to suppress cache warning messages on log-in. New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia-type addons.

Search List

The list of mobs that _NPCScan searches for can be modified easily through the Interface Options panel, however it comes pre-configured with most rare mobs.; To access the mob list, type “/npcscan”. Grayed out NPCs in a list aren't being searched for, either because they're cached or not needed for their achievement.

The first tab available lists Custom NPCs that you can enter or remove manually. NPCs that are already cached show a red “X” in the first column. You can add or remove Custom NPCs with the [+] and [-] buttons at the bottom right.

All other tabs control achievements like Bloody Rareand Frostbitten. These tabs show an additional column on the right with green check marks for completed achievement mobs. You may enable or disable tracking each achievement with its tab's checkbox.

To remove non custom mobs from a tab, click on the mob that you want to remove and then click on the "Remove" button. This will remove the selected mob from the current tab and add it to the Ignore List Tab. If you ever want to restore a Ignored Mob, select it from the "Ignore List" tab, click the "Remove" button and it should be added back to its original tab.

The “Search for completed Achievement NPCs” checkbox at the top left of the pane allows you to keep looking for mobs you no longer need for achievements.

Finding NPC IDs

A mob's NPC ID is its unique identification number, and it can be found on sites like WowHead or WowDB For example, search for the mob “Dirkee” on WowHead and go to the mob's page. That page's URL will look like

32500 is Dirkee's NPC ID.

I think this is probably the most frustrating addon i've tried. Allright, it warns you when a rare is found, great, but that's about it. It marks the rare with a raid target icon wich you cannot see anywhere else then having the npc in your sight. The addon warns you, you can target the npc and from then on you just have to look around (wich is the frustrating part) You start looking like a mad man only to discover you have found him to late.

Atleast mark the map or something where the found has bin registered, or close down the range the addon detects the npc's, because as of now i miss goddamn alot of rare's cause the range is way to big and i have to search to long to find him + there is no clear mark anywhere where he should be, except a raid target icon, wich must be in viewing distance to observe.

you can switch on the show target option in the minimap tracking menu, I usually find that this helps me find the rares much quicker as the target will have a distinct marker on the minimap when you click the npcscan target button.

Not sure about in other zones. (Pre-Mop) NPC did put down an area icon on your mini map.

It's probably some kinda bug atm that has not been addressed. Nor do when you hit M does it show the Npc Legend or where they "might" be for MoP zones unlike Pre-Mop ones.

Give it some time. If not just go to wowwikki and look up the Mob name, they'll be listed on there where they have been found. It's what I have done and beat a few people to them. If it does go off, they're not far from your location.

The best option for "deleting the creaturecache is to rename the file.

On the other hand i have noticed a problem with this addon, while the method of finding the creatures is great (using the creaturecache).

I am having massive issues finding the rare hunter pets, as it tags them as seen in the creature cache when another hunter has one.
I have just seens someone with Skoll (not called Skoll, just Spirit Beast), and now Skoll appears on the cached list of creature's I've seen. But the NPC scan alert does not go off when these are seen.

something wrong with my npcscan, from the time the patch 5.0.4 came live, my addon does not alert me for anything. i cleared cache many times and even uninstalled/reinstalled both npcscan and overlay, but it never alerts me. i fly next to rares who arent cached, see them and no alert.

    any ideas anyone?

  • #1837

Mac user here - haven't had the same issues and even since the patch I am picking up rares. Probably get more without CRZ but that's no fault of the addon.

  • #1835

the addon is woking for MoP rare mobs?

IMac user here... Just downloaded and installed the Add-On and it is asking me to clear the cache. I see that the author of this Add-On tells PC users how to clear the cache, yet there are NO instructions for Mac users... Does anyone know how to clear the cache on an IMac? Thanks in advance... PS, I see that the author of this Add-On does not reply to any questions or queries. Maybe I will simply remove it an not use it at all, after all; clearing the cache should be simple. Clicking a button would be ideal, but I see that many users are unhappy with the fact that the cache has to be physically cleared. Sounds like a great Add-On, but I don't think it's worth the trouble unless someone can tell me how to "easily" clear the cache. The author should really consider the user's requests and needs, or else why bother making this Add-On at all... <rhetorical question> - Update: I removed a file called "creaturecache.wdb" in the following directory and it seems to have solved the problem, but I am concerned that it may affect the overall game-play. I don't know what the outcome may be in the long term so I saved the file in case it needs to be restored. File Path: - Applications: WoW folder: Cache: WDB: enUS: creaturecache.wdb <--- By removing this file from the Cache folder the Add-On loaded properly and did not ask me to clear the cache again and all of the NPCs I was hoping to find are still listed. My concern is that by removing this file the application may not recognize the NPCs I have already encountered. Time will tell. ~ Re:Update: - After launching and then quitting the application a new file called creaturecache.wdb was created in the cache. (same path shown above) - If you are the author of this Add-On I would still appreciate a reply and an answer as to whether or not this was the proper way of emptying the cache on an IMac using OSX 10.8.1 - Thanks and peace! Cool

I'm not the author, but yes, that is the correct method.

  • #1831

You can make a script or use Automator to easily delete the "creaturecache" file. I'm not an expert Mac user but i do know how to google and youtube something that i need done. Please do the research and you can easily double click a icon that automatically trashes the file. If you did even more research you could have the script run as you double click the WoW launcher.

I wish I had more time to respond to comments here and at WoWInterface, but my schedule and priorities have changed a lot since I first published my mods. For future reference for anyone interested, I do reliably respond to feature requests and bug reports on my Google Code issue tracker here:

As for your main question, you did delete the right file. Relative to your WoW folder, the cache always resides in the same sub-folder no matter which operating system you use. I wish the cache was easier to clear as much as you do, but add-ons don't have the ability to help.

lol... FamCortez, funny, you didn't understand what I clearly stated. I said when you leave a BG *AFTER CLEARING THE CACHE* and not going anywhere, it says that the cache needs to be cleared again. I never said anything about the Add-On causing problems in a BG... Chill, bro... and I do appreciate the suggestion to Google a script, but If I can do it and it as easy as you claim it is, then it should be implemented into the Add-On. <period>... That is my opinion, if you don't like it feel free to bitch out all of the users whom have asked for this to be done, not just me. If you really wanted to be helpful you could have Googled the info (as I just did) and posted a URL to a page that addresses the problem rather than becoming the problem. - If you need help go here ---> npcscan clear cache&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Mac Users: I am testing out a suggestion that I found online and I will post whether or not it solves the problem once I have a chance to test it out (servers are offline).

If you are interested in trying it out follow these easy steps. Note that you will need Administrative Privileges on your computer to make the final changes.

    1) Exit the game first - then go to Applications Folder > World of Warcraft > Cache Folder > WDB > enUS (language folder) and locate the file called > creaturecache.wdb (Throw it in the trash) - I would make a backup copy or keep the original in another folder just to be safe.

    2) Launch the game and log in using another toon. Not your hunter, so that _NPCScan does not activate.

    3) Quit the application and go back to the Cache folder. (path shown above)

    4) Select the new file called creaturecache.wdb then hold down the Apple key and the letter " I " as in information.

    5) In the pop-up info window (on the bottom) you can change the setting from (read and write) to (read only) - Click on each of the names listed (there may be more than one) and set the file to READ ONLY. - This will keep the application from writing new data to the file and it may stop _NPCScan from prompting you to empty the cache each time you launch WoW.

As I stated before, I have not tested it yet although I did have time to log back in before the servers went down and I did not get any warnings from _NPCScan, so it may have worked. - I will update this info as needed.... Peace!

Update: - I spent the past 4 hours in Northrend (farming) and playing PvP BGs. - Sadly the method I attemtped did not work as expected. - When I leave a PvP BG _NPCScan continues to add NPCs and rare pets to the cache and suggests that the cache be cleared. - It looks like Mac users will have to empty their cache using the method listed above each and every time they enter and then exit a PvP battle ground; at least for now. I will continue to look for a better solution because I'd like to use this Add-On. I have yet to find any rare pets or NPCs using it, but I will continue to empty my cache as needed and hope for the best. - Peace out!

Saiket: - Quick question... Will _NPCScan inform us if we encounter ANY NPCs or Rare Pets (even if they are cached) - if the option that reads "Search For Completed Achievement NPCs" is checked? - Thanks again for your time and dedication!

You sir are freaking out...please feel free to read all the instructions on how to use this Addon.....If you enter a battleground it will cache pets of hunters in the BG. This is clearly stated under the "Limitations" of the description of the addon.

  • #1830

Sorry, but I have been using this Add-On since yesterday and it is constantly telling me to clear the cache and it is telling me that some of the pets are already cached, yet I have never encountered them or been to those places on the map. If you delete the cache (Using an IMac) - and you restart the game everything is fine, untill you enter a PvP BG/Zone and then go back. - Immediately the Add-On will tell you that you should clear the cache and again; I have not found the pets/NPCs it is telling me that have been cached. And also, if I check my achievements, it says that I have explored areas of Northrend that I have never been to. - This is pretty messed up and urge you to work on a fix - ASAP... Thanks again! - Peace!

  • #1829

Sadly, I relaunched the application this morning and I am getting the same message again, about clearing the cache. I will wait till you are able to resolve the problem before I recommend it to my friends and guild mates. - Thanks for your reply!
