About _NPCScan
_NPCScan tracks seldom-seen rare mobs by proximity alone, making the old “<kbd>/targetexact …</kbd>” macros obsolete. It has the same range as those targeting macros, but you won't have to mash any buttons. Just go about your business and let _NPCScan alert you when it finds something.
Details
The Cache
This addon doesn't use nameplates or mouseover units to find rares. Instead, it checks your creature cache for the moment a rare mob is found. There is one catch to this technique however: Once a mob is “found”, _NPCScan won't be able to find it again until your cache is cleared. If you find a rare mob's corpse—Dirkee for example—you would have to clear your cache before _NPCScan would find Dirkee again. Thankfully, clearing your cache is a safe and simple matter.
Clearing Your Cache
To clear your cache, follow these straightforward steps:
- Exit World of Warcraft.
- Delete the “<kbd>Cache</kbd>” sub-directory inside your World of Warcraft folder. For example on a standard Windows XP installation, you would delete the folder “<kbd>C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Cache</kbd>”.
- Advanced users can delete “<kbd>C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS\creaturecache.wdb</kbd>” specifically to improve log-in times, where <kbd>enUS</kbd> is your language code.
<font color="red">Note: Windows Vista and Windows 7 users see this info if your cache isn't in the location above.</font>
That's it. Log in after you've done that and you'd be able to find Dirkee a second time. It's completely safe because WoW will recreate your Cache folder after you log in again.
Cache Warning
If a rare mob is already cached when you log in, _NPCScan will print a warning message with the names of those mobs. If you see this message but still want to find the listed NPCs again, it's time to clear your cache by following the above procedure. Otherwise, you can quit searching for those mobs using the Search options window detailed below. You can suppress this log-in message using the main options pane, as well.
“Found” Alert
When a rare mob is found, _NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying an animated targeting button. To get a feel for what this alert looks and sounds like, try the “<kbd>Test Found Alert</kbd>” button in the addon's main Interface Options panel. (See the Options section below.)
Targeting Button
When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the most-recently-found mob. You can also bind a key to hit this button. If the default button position isn't to your liking, you can move it while holding your <kbd><CTRL></kbd> key.
<font color="red">Note: The button cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button will appear after you leave combat. You will still hear the alert however, and the name of the mob will appear in your chat log.</font>
Options
_NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. This panel includes a “<kbd>Test Found Alert</kbd>” button, various ways to customize the alert sound, and an option to suppress cache warning messages on log-in.
New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing <cite>SharedMedia</cite>-type addons.
Search List
The list of mobs that _NPCScan searches for can be modified easily through the Interface Options panel, however it comes pre-configured with most rare Outlands and Northrend mobs. To access the mob list, type “<kbd>/npcscan</kbd>”.
Grayed out NPCs in a list aren't being searched for, either because they're cached or not needed for their achievement.
- The first tab available lists Custom NPCs that you can enter or remove manually. NPCs that are already cached show a red “<kbd>X</kbd>” in the first column. You can add or remove Custom NPCs with the <kbd>[+]</kbd> and <kbd>[-]</kbd> buttons at the bottom right.
- All other tabs control achievements like Bloody Rare and Frostbitten. These tabs show an additional column on the right with green check marks for completed achievement mobs. You may enable or disable tracking each achievement with its tab's checkbox.
The “<kbd>Search for completed Achievement NPCs</kbd>” checkbox at the top left of the pane allows you to keep looking for mobs you no longer need for achievements.
Finding NPC IDs
A mob's NPC ID is its unique identification number, and it can be found on sites like WowHead or WowDB. For example, search for the mob “<kbd>Dirkee</kbd>” on WowHead and go to the mob's page. That page's URL will look like “<kbd>http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=32500</kbd>”; <kbd>32500</kbd> is Dirkee's NPC ID.
Limitations
The only problem mobs for _NPCScan are tamable beasts. Even when you run across the tamed version, _NPCScan gets tricked into thinking that mob is nearby. In order to prevent those false positives, _NPCScan only shows alerts for tamable mobs in their original zones. That is, if you spot Loque'nahak in Dalaran instead of Sholazar Basin where it usually patrols, _NPCScan would ignore it. When one of these tamable mob false-alarms happens, you'll see a message in your chat window explaining why it got ignored.
Since this makes tamable mobs are so difficult to track, I suggest you fly to the tamable mob's zone first, clear your cache, and then search for it. Any time you pass through a populated area like Dalaran, you risk filling your cache with popular rare pets.

Its working fine for me. I even switched languages inbetween and added a few pandarian rares. Its doing what its supposed to do. Maybe another addon interfering? Reinstall into a 2nd wow installation and test there.
Can someone please tell me how far NPC scan searches for?
for example if im in sholazar basin and im want to find loque' nahak will it tell me if he spawns on east side of the basin if im on the west? or do i need to be close to it for npc to go off? PLEASE REPLY ive been at this for 2 weeks
It pops when the mob is close enough that you can target it. This is not an exact distance, and varies based on a lot of different factors. Basically, as soon as the server tells your client that the mob is nearby, NPCScan will pop.
For Loque, you have to be fairly close, possibly as close as 40 yards. If you are serious about catching that cat, either to tame or to kill, you should probably get NPCScan Overlay, which will show you on your minimap the areas he can appear in. Then, just fly around the zone in a big circle, catching all those areas until it pops.
I would guess 40 yards since that is max attack range. Seems like what it is from my use of this mod as well except for that huge world elite by halfhill but that could be because he is 10 stories tall.
90x _NPCScan.Overlay-5.0.0.3\Modules\Carbonite-5.2.1.lua:13: attempt to index global "NxData" (a nil value) _NPCScan.Overlay-5.0.0.3\Modules\Carbonite-5.2.1.lua:13: in main chunk
Safe to assume that the addon is no longer supported?
Yes
Are there plans to include the rare spawns on the Isle of Thunder? That would be very helpful in locating certain rares, like Molthor and Skyclaw, who have more than one spawn point/patrol. Other than that, awesome mod! I recommend it to everyone.
An update is needed for the new 5.2 rare spawns Warbringer and Warscouts. Also would you please fix / add the option to ignore cached mobs if the pop-up window has been closed. Can't count the number of rares I've passed up because I forgot to log out and delete my cache folder. Thanks a ton in advance! LOVE THIS MOD!!
I'm having issues finding my cache folder. Like i even type it into my search through all my files and i don't have a curse folder, a world of warcraft folder, or cache folder. But it keeps caching them? what do i do?
You dont need to restart computer, just have WoW closed down before deleting the cache.
When WoW restarts it reads the various caches, both official game and mods (which is why it is slower with lots of mods, as it is not just the mod loading, but the mods cache/info), when WoW id closed properly, it writes the caches from memory to the HD.
If WoW is not closed properly, power failure for example, then new cache info is not stored for the game or the mods, for example new mining / herb nodes. So always close the game properly.
In the event that this addon is still being developed ...
Any chance of getting a way to simply disable scanning while taking a flight path? Because CRZ has rendered the scans useless if it finds something while you're on a taxi. From what I can tell, when you take a taxi you remain in the CRZ of your departure point, and you don't switch to a new CRZ until you reach your destination. So let's say my current zone is CRZ'd to the Lightbringer server. I hop a taxi, and every zone I pass over while in flight will also be the Lightbringer version of that zone (and therefore, any rares detected are being detected in the Lightbringer version of those zones). I will continue to exist on Lightbringer until I reach my destination, at which point my CRZ may change.
But if I travel by ground or on my own flying mount, my CRZ will change every time I cross a zone border. So while a zone may have been the Lightbringer version while I was flying over on a taxi, once I actually set foot (or fly over on my own mount) in that zone, I may actually now be in the Cairne version. And alas, that rare I detected while flying over the Lightbringer zone on the taxi doesn't currently exist in the Cairne version of the zone. And this is endlessly frustrating.
A recent, frustrating example: After doing the PvP quests in Grizzly Hills, I hopped a taxi from Amberpine Lodge to Wintergarde Keep in Dragonblight, simply to clear my PvP flag before hearthing back to Pandaria. En route, NPCScan detected Scarlet Highlord Daion (one of only four rares I still need for the Frostbitten achievement) near Naxx. My taxi landed at Wintergarde a mere 10-15 seconds later. I immediately mounted my own flying mount, flew directly back to the spot where NPCScan went off, and patrolled the entire area where that rare could spawn. She was nowhere to be found ... because I was no longer on the same server, thanks to CRZ.
This kind of thing has happened multiple times with different rares. NPCScan kept detecting Hogzilla while taking taxis between Stormwind and Ironforge. I decided my dwarf hunter wanted to tame him, but dangit, that darn pig was never actually there once I set foot in Searing Gorge. (I did eventually get it by the old-fashioned "camp the spawn point" method.)
It's just really frustrating being taunted with rares while on a taxi when they likely won't be there when I come back for them.
Thanks for this, it happened to me twice this morning and I thought something was going haywire. What you're suggesting makes sense and though it's pesky at least I understand what's going on now.
I'm doubting anything can be done about it due to how the cacheing works
