About Pawn

Pawn calculates scores for items to help you easily find upgrades for your gear. It's completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation: for example, it can help you decide whether to equip the ring with a higher item level but one stat you don't want (say, strength for shamans), or the ring with the lower item level but all good stats. It's that level of customization that makes it very different from more general mods like GearScore and more specialized mods like TankPoints.

Pawn can be used by new players right off the bat without needing to change any options, or by advanced players who plan out their gear upgrades, build Excel spreadsheets, and run simulations.

Language support

Pawn works with English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish (European), Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Unlike most addons, it's NOT possible to use the English version on a language that it doesn't support. (If you're interested in helping translate Pawn into other languages, let me know!)

Pawn will automatically set itself up to work with your characters, but there's a lot that you can do to customize it. See the readme file included with Pawn for more information on getting the most out of Pawn.

If you think you might have found a bug, you can file an official ticket on CurseForge or comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (3) your class and spec if you're using the default Wowhead stat weights. Screenshots are often very helpful as well.

Version 1.9.16

    The "Special effects were not included in the value" message that you'd see at the bottoms of tooltips for trinkets and enchanted weapons has been removed.
    The (?) icon used to indicate special effects on items has been replaced with a small orange diamond (like in Diablo III).
    Support for crystals of fear and sha-touched sockets, cogwheels and cogwheel sockets, and assigning a fixed value to the effect portion of a meta gem (2% chance to restore mana, etc.) have all been removed, as those features are no longer relevant in any current content.

Version 1.9.15

    Pawn will now work with AtlasLoot again.
    Included some improvements to the Portuguese translation.

Version 1.9.14

    Fixed a bug where sometimes Pawn would save over custom key bindings set up by certain addons, such as ElvUI.

    Given their exorbitant cost, Pawn will no longer suggest Greater Taladite gems on gear lower than item level 685 (mythic Highmaul).
    Fixed the problem where some new Draenor wands caused an error to appear in the chat log and did not have their DPS calculated correctly.
    Attempted to fix a problem in Spanish where numbers greater than 1,000 were not read properly.

Version 1.9.8

    New scales from Wowhead have been integrated into Pawn, and the starter scales that Pawn previously included have been removed.
    Includes a new Spanish translation, which is still a work-in-progress.
    Fixed a bug where the socketing advisor would always unhelpfully suggest that you put a gem "of any color" into a prismatic socket.
    Fixed a bug where It was difficult or impossible to change the color of a scale, depending on where the Pawn window is situated.  (It was difficult if the scale list happened to be behind the color window.)
    Fixed a bug where if you opened your chest of Garrison Resources and the last item you won (it showed up in a "you won!" popup) was an upgrade, the Garrison Resources would also show up as an upgrade.  (Hey, maybe you got some Complicated Wood instead of Simple Wood.)
    Removed the code that dealt with Wrathion's Breath of the Black Prince item, which added sockets to certain weapons, but is no longer obtainable by new players and not relevant to current content.

Version 1.9.7

    Strength, Agility, Intellect, and Stamina can't be marked as "unusable" in custom scales.  (Since multiple primary stats are on most armor pieces now, marking those as unusable leads to some confusing and unexpected results.)
    Made a couple small improvements to the French, German, and Traditional Chinese translations.

Version 1.9.6

    Pawn will now no longer suggest gems for items below level 630 (level 100 heroic dungeon).  (This change is particularly noticeable for helms, which had high-value meta sockets at level 90, but not at level 100.)
    Improved the German and Simplified Chinese translations.

Version 1.9.5

    Additional changes to try to prevent the "UseSpecialQuestItem" error from occurring when clicking items in the objectives list.
    More improvements to the Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese translations.

    Dodge and Parry on low-level items will now be treated as if they were Bonus Armor, at a 2:1 ratio.  (40 Parry on an item will be treated as 20 Bonus Armor.)
    Pawn will now once again work with AtlasLoot even when the "Use GameTooltip" AtlasLoot setting is off.  (Release versions only, not the latest AtlasLoot beta.)
    The warrior tank starter scale now properly has a value for bonus armor.

    Changed the way that Pawn uses item tooltips, in the hopes that it will prevent issues where the game blocks certain buttons and actions due to "taint."
    Fixed a bug where a few settings wouldn't be saved when logging out, including Pawn's list of your best items used for determining upgrades.

    Bonus armor is now listed as a separate stat from base armor and can be given a value independently.
    Significantly increased the value of armor and bonus armor in the tank starter scales.

    Fixed a harmless error where a message about being unable to parse the item link could appear in the chat log when hovering over a caged battle pet.

Version 1.9

    Updated for WoW 6.0 and Warlords of Draenor.  Many features have changed in some way as a result of item changes in patch 6.0.
    I updated the visuals for the Pawn UI to be a little more warlordy.
    A new set of starter scales have been added for all classes and specs.  You can use these scales as you would the old Wowhead scales, and you can also customize them to your heart's content.
    The Wowhead scales have been disabled since they haven't been updated for patch 6.0 and would do more harm than good.
    The values of Pawn's default scale have changed to be a more appropriate starting point for WoW 6.0.
    New stats are recognized and can be assigned values on the Values tab: Bonus Armor, Multistrike, Versatility, Movement Speed, Leech, Avoidance, Indestructible.
    Obsolete stats (hit, etc.) are removed from your scales upon logging in, and have been removed from the UI.
    All of the new Taladite gems in Warlords of Draenor are now in Pawn's database.
    The changes to stats on pre-Draenor gems in Pawn's database have been taken into account for purposes of gem recommendations.  (I anticipate that I'll need to do another update of gem stats before the expansion hits.)
    A new option has been added, on by default: "Ignore sockets on low-level items."  When this option is enabled, Pawn will ignore sockets when calculating values of low-level items (currently, any item below level 463), so they won't have inflated values when Pawn determines upgrades.
    Pawn's calculations for item values no longer take reforging potential into account since that feature is gone from the game.
    All code for Pawn's Reforge Advisor feature has been removed.
    Changed the way that information about your best items for purposes of determining upgrades is stored and processed.  (I now use item links instead of item IDs, since in Warlords of Draenor, a mythic version of one item and the raid finder version of the same item might have the same ID but a different bonus suffix.)

    Two handed vs One handed and off hand

    Is there a way to compare a two handed weapon to a one handed weapon and a off hand? If not, could it be implemented in if it's not too difficult?

    Hi!  This has been on the to-do list for a bit too long, unfortunately.  Right now the thing to do is just to take the raw values of the three items and then add the two one-handers and compare in your head.  (4500 + 1000 for the one-handers beats 5200 for the two-hander, for example.)  The raw numbers for each item aren't put on tooltips by default, but you can get them by putting the items in the Compare tab.  (Be sure to give the off-hand a little nudge since it's an extra slot that you can put an +int enchantment on.)

    What I'd like to do is make it so that you can load two items into each side of the Compare window if they're one-handed weapons and off-hands, but it's not really set up to do that so it's a bit challenging.

    Any plans to support a 5.3 PvP mode, where gear gets scaled down (but not up) to 496 when in arenas or battlegrounds?

    I believe the scaling rule is very close to 13 ilvls = 13% and is exponential.

    So the scaling for one ilvl is

    x = 1.13^(1/13).

    so for going from say 522 to 496 stats (say mastery) would shrink by

    pvpMastery = mastery / (x^(522-496))

    I'm not sure what the rounding rules would be, but I think this formula would at least be pretty close to what happens in game.

    Can you explain a little bit more about what you'd like Pawn to do with that scaling factor?  Just apply it to the values of all items 496+ and then use the adjusted values to calculate upgrades?  For example, would you expect then that if you turned on "5.3 PvP mode" and had a level 502 cloak and then looked at a level 600 cloak with the same stats, it would show up as little to no upgrade because both items would get scaled down to 496?  Knowing what you would use the feature for would help me understand a little better.  Thanks for the suggestion!

    Exactly.  I'd use it for my PvP ranking.  It would help decide whether I should use a 502 or 522 PvE piece in battlegrounds over a 476 PvP piece (which has some free PvPPower in addition to the other stats that would be on 476 PvE gear).

    i have a suggestion for the gems choices on the items; it is possible in a future version to add an option to choose a specific gem for the comparison of two items? (i don't want to stack +3000 hit/exp on gems.

    Hi!  Thanks for the suggestion.  I do want to do something smarter with hit and expertise in a future version.  Frost DKs love hit and expertise, but mine's at almost 13-damned-% hit after reforging everything I can off my gear, so clearly I don't want to fill my gear with Rigid gems.

    Right now your best bet is to make a custom scale by copying the one you're using (if you're not already using a custom scale) and then adjust the values for that scale and reduce Hit.  Try reducing the value to be below the next best secondary stat.  That way Pawn will suggest different gems, and will take those new gems into account when comparing and calculating values.

    Hi!  Pawn will tell you which of your items is the best one that you've ever equipped of that type of item.  So if you just have one spec, everything you're wearing right now will probably show up "best."  (If you have multiple specs and gear sets, each one will have items that show up as "best" for that particular spec.  For rings, it'll show you a second-best item as well.)  Then, when you hover over new items or they drop in raids or someone links them in chat, you'll see which ones are considered better than what you already have as upgrades—they'll get green arrows and something like "7% upgrade".  (Here's an example screenshot.)  Each item will be evaluated separately for each of your class's specs by default.  If you don't care about one or two of your class's specs, you can turn them off by shift-clicking them in the list in the left side Pawn window, which you can get to by clicking the Pawn button on your character sheet.

    Don't worry if Pawn's a bit different from stuff you've used before; there isn't really anything else that works like it.  :)

    I just downloaded this last night, as I read that it could make comparing items and gear a little easier. However, because I'm new to this type of addon, I'm a little confused on how to read it. Basically because it says that every item I have is "best", even though I can cleary see that the values are drastically different. I could just be looking at this all wrong though, which is probably the case, but could someone give me a simple yet clear explanation on how to read this. If it helps, I'm talking about just using the shift function to compare my items.

    I have had the items not calculating correctly as d_archangel below has reported.

    The Cloak of Itesh (item=66898)

    When I set all variables except Stam to 0 (Stam at .001)

    The cloak (which has no hit) is valued at .2

    When I give Hit the value of 1.0 ... the cloak suddenly becomes 36.2

    That 36 points drove me crazy.  I spent 2 hours finding the stat that was throwing it off.

    The cloak I was using for comparison was the heirloom cloak.  It changed properly with all additions, including the Hit value (It has no hit either).

    Does your addon read the stats from the tooltip, or does it read an internal listing.  If internal, I wonder if Blizzard has screwed up a few items recently ... not as advertized.

    I have a screenshoot uploaded.  The Draebow Scale has Hit set to 0 and is now showing the proper score.  The Zero Scale has everything Zero but Stamina and Hit ... as shown. (Screenshot Link)

    Found other items:
    Zero Scale => Stam=0.001/Hit=1 (All other values = 0)

    Items show Hit when there is NO Hit listed on the item:

    Cagebreaker's Chain Links (item#81023) 80.4 instead of 0.4
    Lurking Tiger Band (item#80770) 159.4 in quest tooltip / 66.4 in bag (instead of 0.4)
    Ornate Band (rare item#90904 of the Zephyr) 85.5
        [Ornate Band (common item#83793 of the Stormblast) Has Hit and shows properly 159.4]


    I am finding it on many items that have no HIt value.  Items with Hit, will register properly ... giving them a poorer score than items without (on some items).  This also begs  the question ... is there another stat that is also doing the same thing.  I found the problem on one conflict and made a scale to measure the problem on other items.  What if there is another stat doing the same, but one I am not using and therefore don't notice?

    Sorry for the confusion (and the late reply).  What you're seeing is that 40% of the secondary stat that shows up the most on the item (Mastery in the case of your example screenshot) is being interpreted as hit, since if hit were truly the only stat you cared about, clearly you'd reforge any item that you got to include more hit.  In a more practical sense, Pawn tries to anticipate how you'd reforge an item, and it takes that reforging into account when calculating the value for any item that can be reforged.

    If you'd like details on how a particular item's core is calculated, one thing that you can do is put it into both sides of the Compare tab, which will give you a stat-by-stat breakdown and a few details like how much the score increased due to reforging and gems and that sort of stuff.
