About Pawn

Pawn calculates scores for items to help you easily find upgrades for your gear. It's completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation: for example, it can help you decide whether to equip the ring with a higher item level but one stat you don't want (say, strength for shamans), or the ring with the lower item level but all good stats. It's that level of customization that makes it very different from more general mods like GearScore and more specialized mods like TankPoints.

Pawn can be used by new players right off the bat without needing to change any options, or by advanced players who plan out their gear upgrades, build Excel spreadsheets, and run simulations.

Language support

Pawn works with English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish (European), Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Unlike most addons, it's NOT possible to use the English version on a language that it doesn't support. (If you're interested in helping translate Pawn into other languages, let me know!)

Pawn will automatically set itself up to work with your characters, but there's a lot that you can do to customize it. See the readme file included with Pawn for more information on getting the most out of Pawn.

If you think you might have found a bug, you can file an official ticket on CurseForge or comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (3) your class and spec if you're using the default Wowhead stat weights. Screenshots are often very helpful as well.

Version 1.9.16

    The "Special effects were not included in the value" message that you'd see at the bottoms of tooltips for trinkets and enchanted weapons has been removed.
    The (?) icon used to indicate special effects on items has been replaced with a small orange diamond (like in Diablo III).
    Support for crystals of fear and sha-touched sockets, cogwheels and cogwheel sockets, and assigning a fixed value to the effect portion of a meta gem (2% chance to restore mana, etc.) have all been removed, as those features are no longer relevant in any current content.

Version 1.9.15

    Pawn will now work with AtlasLoot again.
    Included some improvements to the Portuguese translation.

    Fixed the problem where some new Draenor wands caused an error to appear in the chat log and did not have their DPS calculated correctly.
    Attempted to fix a problem in Spanish where numbers greater than 1,000 were not read properly.

Version 1.9.8

    New scales from Wowhead have been integrated into Pawn, and the starter scales that Pawn previously included have been removed.
    Includes a new Spanish translation, which is still a work-in-progress.
    Fixed a bug where the socketing advisor would always unhelpfully suggest that you put a gem "of any color" into a prismatic socket.
    Fixed a bug where It was difficult or impossible to change the color of a scale, depending on where the Pawn window is situated.  (It was difficult if the scale list happened to be behind the color window.)
    Fixed a bug where if you opened your chest of Garrison Resources and the last item you won (it showed up in a "you won!" popup) was an upgrade, the Garrison Resources would also show up as an upgrade.  (Hey, maybe you got some Complicated Wood instead of Simple Wood.)
    Removed the code that dealt with Wrathion's Breath of the Black Prince item, which added sockets to certain weapons, but is no longer obtainable by new players and not relevant to current content.

Version 1.9.7

    Strength, Agility, Intellect, and Stamina can't be marked as "unusable" in custom scales.  (Since multiple primary stats are on most armor pieces now, marking those as unusable leads to some confusing and unexpected results.)
    Made a couple small improvements to the French, German, and Traditional Chinese translations.

Version 1.9.6

    Pawn will now no longer suggest gems for items below level 630 (level 100 heroic dungeon).  (This change is particularly noticeable for helms, which had high-value meta sockets at level 90, but not at level 100.)

Version 1.9

    Updated for WoW 6.0 and Warlords of Draenor.  Many features have changed in some way as a result of item changes in patch 6.0.
    I updated the visuals for the Pawn UI to be a little more warlordy.
    A new set of starter scales have been added for all classes and specs.  You can use these scales as you would the old Wowhead scales, and you can also customize them to your heart's content.
    The Wowhead scales have been disabled since they haven't been updated for patch 6.0 and would do more harm than good.
    The values of Pawn's default scale have changed to be a more appropriate starting point for WoW 6.0.
    New stats are recognized and can be assigned values on the Values tab: Bonus Armor, Multistrike, Versatility, Movement Speed, Leech, Avoidance, Indestructible.
    Obsolete stats (hit, etc.) are removed from your scales upon logging in, and have been removed from the UI.
    All of the new Taladite gems in Warlords of Draenor are now in Pawn's database.
    The changes to stats on pre-Draenor gems in Pawn's database have been taken into account for purposes of gem recommendations.  (I anticipate that I'll need to do another update of gem stats before the expansion hits.)
    A new option has been added, on by default: "Ignore sockets on low-level items."  When this option is enabled, Pawn will ignore sockets when calculating values of low-level items (currently, any item below level 463), so they won't have inflated values when Pawn determines upgrades.
    Pawn's calculations for item values no longer take reforging potential into account since that feature is gone from the game.
    All code for Pawn's Reforge Advisor feature has been removed.
    Changed the way that information about your best items for purposes of determining upgrades is stored and processed.  (I now use item links instead of item IDs, since in Warlords of Draenor, a mythic version of one item and the raid finder version of the same item might have the same ID but a different bonus suffix.)

    Gem values

    I'm finding a discrepancy between Pawn & Wowhead for manually-entered scales, which I believe is related to the sockets no longer appearing in the scales. Example: Tempestuous Longbow heroic with 899 agi, 600 crit, 600 hit. 3285 rdps, 3.0 rspd. I had used for my sv hunter, which gave a pawn scale of "Agility=2.817, RedSocket=450.72, YellowSocket=370.4, BlueSocket=317.52, MetaSocket=143.269, RangedDps=2.446, RangedSped=1622.93, HitRating=1.152, ExpertiseRating=1.152, MasteryRating=0.354, CritRating=0.581, HasteRating=1.813, Ap=1.197, Rap=1.197", which I enterd into Pawn and Wowhead. (There's nowhere in the Pawn scales to put the sockets or RAP, so I ignored those). Wowhead gives the weight of 10.1, expected from the normalizing. Pawn gives the value 6.27. Looking at pawn debug, it's normalizing by a value greater than the sum of the entered values (2627.27).

    The sv hunter preset *does* work properly. I'm guessing pawn is still internally adding sockets into the normalization for manual scales but not presets?

    Thanks for the info!  I'll take a look.  Seems like a reasonable conclusion to draw.  In the meantime, that shouldn't affect the relative values of items, so you should at least be able to still rely on comparisons and upgrade percentages.

    Usually I use wowhead's filter and look at the numeric values from the custom scale I enter to compare with the pawn raw values on my character. You're right, though, I could visit the vendors and hover, although there are a number of vendors, and it wouldn't help with looking at, say, anticipating LFR drops and their values (which wowhead would show). I'm confident you'll solve it in the future. TY.

    Hmmm, I'm not quite sure I understand.  By default Pawn will tell you how much of an upgrade an item is over your current gear when you hover over it.  But, it's true that this is a percentage, so if you want to try to calculate an improvement to your total score per VP spent, Pawn's upgrade percentage isn't quite what you want.

    That said, you should still be able to get the information you want by visiting the valor gear vendor or using AtlasLoot.  If you want raw scores on item tooltips, you can turn them on using the Options tab.  If you want to go into even more detail using the Compare tab in Pawn, you don't have to have the item to compare it with your current gear; you can bind keys to copy an item you're hovering over into Pawn.  By default Pawn will try to bind the ] (right bracket) key, but you can customize it.  So, for example, you can be at the VP vendor and hover over a piece of gear that looks tasty, and then press ] to compare its stats with what you currently have.

    Understood, but it does preclude comparisons with Wowhead, which I'd like in order to determine whether to buy valor gear. I suppose one workaround would be to buy a piece, compare its pawn rating, then refund it.... TY in advance

    So when you go to turn in a quest, it only shows the Green Upgrade arrow if its in your specialazation?

    1. Say that I'm on my Unholy DK. I turn in a quest and there is a green arrow. Boom click that right?

    2. Say that I'm on the same character. Turn in a quest and there is no arrow. HOWEVER there is an item with a green frame that says its an upgrade for a frost dk. Do I click that?

    You should see the green arrow and the green tooltip border for the same items—you shouldn't ever see one and not the other.  EXCEPT, sometimes the server hasn't sent stats for the quest reward items to your computer by the time the quest window appears, so Pawn doesn't show any upgrade arrows OR the "most valuable item" coins, but by the time you hover over the items, your computer has gotten that information, so it can color the border after all.  Hopefully that sort of clears that up.  If you do see the arrow/coins, you can trust them.  If you see neither, then you'll need to hover, and hopefully that's rare.  I can't remember the last time it happened for me.

    By default Pawn will show you upgrades for all three of your specs, and it doesn't prioritize unholy items over blood items or anything like that.  If you want to just see unholy items, you can open up Pawn and shift-click "DK: frost" and "DK: blood" in the list to hide them.  (Or, instead of shift-clicking, click them and uncheck "Show scale in tooltips" at the bottom.)

    I do appreciate the feedback; I put the checkbox where it is and allowed shift+click because I thought that would be very similar to the quest tracker and thus extremely intuitive for people, but given how much feedback I have gotten on the topic I clearly failed.  So I'll look into other options.

    I also would like to make it so that, by default, Pawn just shows you the 1-2 scales relevant to your character's specs, and automatically turns them on and off if you respec.  That would solve a lot of problems.

    This should be a little more obvious. I just uninstalled and was going to leave a note as to why. Having it show something as being an upgrade for Balance, when I don't even have that as an off-spec was really annoying. I will re-install and try the shift-click. I recommend a check-box or drop-down to select display for current spec only, current or off-spec, all specs.

    Other than this, I think the addon is very well executed and I like the UI aspects all around.

    Bug report:

    Pawn is amazing, but it has some inaccuracies in how it calculates things. One thing I've noticed: if you say set a weight like Crit to very large (e.g. 100x as large as another stat), and turn off normalization, something fishy is going on: All the pieces of gear without crit suddenly gain very inflated weights, even though there should have been no change. What is going on?

    It would be great if Pawn could take enchantability into account. One way to allow this without much effort (but lots of customization) would be to have the armor slot as a valid value for the scale (0 if it's not a glove, 1 if it's a glove), etc.

    I have also manually summed up an item taking into account reforging, and it is almost correct, but not quite. Sorry, perhaps I can give more details on that one in the future.

    On a usability note, it would be nice to be able to delete a scale without having to Copy it first (or to rename Copy as Unlock).

    Otherwise I find Pawn quite invaluable. Thank you!

    Pawn automatically reforges items in its head if it knows that an item can get a better value through reforging.  In the case of your crit scale and an item that just has a bunch of mastery which has no value, Pawn knows that that item might still be salvageable if you reforge the worst stat to crit, so it values it accordingly.

    Can you elaborate further on why you'd want enchantability / armor slots as a feature?  There isn't much value in comparing gloves with pants, since you aren't deciding which one of the two to wear.  (I could see wanting something similar for weapons and off-hands, since you are making a tradeoff there, but there are weapon type "stats" to use.)

    If you delete a scale that you've copied, you're just deleting the copy.  You can't delete the Wowhead scales that come with Pawn.  You can, however, just turn them off.  Shift+click them in the list, or click then and uncheck "Show this scale in tooltips" at the bottom of the list.  Perhaps it was confusing because when you copy a Wowhead scale I assume that you want to hide the original and automatically do that.

    Is there a way to give something a negative value for a stat weight so it would not suggest an agi peice as an upgrade for someone whos primary resource stat (dps, hps, etc) is INT, on my monk every peice of my dps gear (AGI/STA stats) shows as over 100% upgrade for a mistweaver monk, as i dont play a mistweaver i can just disable the stat profile but i am sure there are those that duel spec mistweaver / windwalker

    Hi!  You have a couple options if you don't want to track upgrades for off-specs.  You can shift-click the scales you don't care about, like mistweaver, to hide them and then you won't have to worry about them at all.  Or, if you want, you can indeed set a negative value to intellect.  To change the built-in Wowhead windwalker scale, you'd first need to make a copy of it from the Scale tab.  In fact, if you never, ever, ever want to see items with intellect, you can go to Intellect in the stats list on the Values tab and then check the box that says "items with this are unusable."  That's equivalent to giving intellect a weight of negative infinity.

    When comparing items it seems as Pawn can't recognize if an item is upgraded or not, but instead compares the upgraded item as un-upgraded.

    Hi!  That's intentional; Pawn compares items based on their potential, not their current state.  BUT, that logic is a little skewed now that there are items that have already been upgraded, but you can't upgrade any new items you get.  Right now you can compare those manually if you go into Options and turn on "show values and upgrade %" to see the raw numbers on your item tooltips, and then check "Show both current and base values" to see both the item's base value, which Pawn normally uses to compare items, and the current value, which would take into account its upgrades, reforging, gems, and some enchantments.  Hopefully there won't be so many cases of that problem that you need to do too many manual comparisons.
