About Pawn

Pawn calculates scores for items to help you easily find upgrades for your gear. It's completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation: for example, it can help you decide whether to equip the ring with a higher item level but one stat you don't want (say, strength for shamans), or the ring with the lower item level but all good stats. It's that level of customization that makes it very different from more general mods like GearScore and more specialized mods like TankPoints.

Pawn can be used by new players right off the bat without needing to change any options, or by advanced players who plan out their gear upgrades, build Excel spreadsheets, install Rawr, and read Elitist Jerks.

Language support

Pawn works with English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, and Simplified Chinese, and includes an untested translation into Traditional Chinese. Unlike most addons, it's NOT possible to use the English version on a language that it doesn't support. (If you're interested in helping translate Pawn into other languages, let me know!)

Prerelease alpha versions of Pawn are occasionally available on CurseForge.

Getting started

Pawn will automatically set itself up to work with your characters, but there's a lot that you can do to customize it. See the readme file included with Pawn for more information on getting the most out of Pawn.

Version 1.8.11

Made a tweak to make Pawn's Quest Advisor work better with ElvUI.
    Updated Russian and German translations.

Version 1.8.10

The new Timeless, Flexible, Warforged, and Heroic Warforged items will no longer show a (?) next to those terms.

Version 1.8.10a

Actually including the right file this time so the fix described in the notes works.
    New German translation updates.

Version 1.8.10b

New Russian and Simplified Chinese translation updates.

Version 1.8.9

Items that an Eye of the Black Prince can be applied to (Sha-Touched weapons from Heart of Fear and Terrace of Eternal Spring, Level 502 Blacksmithing weapons, and weapons that drop in Throne of Thunder) will be valued assuming that you add the socket to that weapon.  Weapons from heroic scenarios and Siege of Orgrimmar will not.  (Previously only Sha-Touched weapons were correctly being valued in this way.)
Made a few adjustments to try to better handle chest armor that is classified as "robes" by the game.
    Minor changes for patch 5.4.

Version 1.8.8

Fixed some issues with upgrade displays showing incorrect information for wands.
Fixed some issues with upgrade displays showing incorrect information for characters that don't save healing gear but still have a healing scale enabled.

Version 1.8.7

Pawn will now no longer show any weapons other than daggers as upgrades for assassination rogues when using the default Wowhead scales.
Fixed a rare bug that could occur with quests such as Returned Sevenfold that include both a choice of rewards and some guaranteed rewards, where Pawn could incorrectly display upgrade symbols that were intended for the guaranteed rewards on the icons for the reward choices.
Fixed a problem that appears to be new for patch 5.3 where inspecting another player that you're not also targeting would not calculate an average item level for that player's equipment.

Version 1.8.6

Adjusted the values of PvP power and PvP resilience on MoP-quality gems to their new (halved) values.
    Added Tense Imperial Amethyst.

Version 1.8.5

A few minor changes to work around a rare issue where Pawn would load files in a different order on some machines.

Version 1.8.4

Priests will no longer incorrectly see bows, crossbows, and guns as potential upgrades when using the built-in Wowhead scales.

Version 1.8.3

Sha-touched items from Heart of Fear and Terrace of Eternal Spring (all difficulties) will now always be valued (for base value) as if you've completed Wrathion's Chapter II questline and can add a prismatic socket to the item.
Added a Brailian Portuguese translation.  Thanks maxmag!
Includes minor updates to the other translations.
Fixed a couple minor display issues on the Compare tab when one item had sockets and the other did not.
Thunderforged and Heroic Thunderforged items on the English PTR will no longer show (?) on their tooltips.

Version 1.8.2

Fixed a bug in average item level calculations when inspecting hunters.  (Their ranged weapons were only getting counted for half the appropriate level.)
The Reforging Advisor will now also show up when you right-click an item while talking to an arcane reforger.

Version 1.8.1

This version of Pawn now includes French support, thanks to translation volunteers othor and Snuff, and an untested Traditional Chinese translation based on work by BNSSNB.
Reduced Pawn's memory usage by about 35% (at least on my PC) by optimizing the way translations are loaded.  Pawn's memory usage should return to about where it was back when it was for a single language only.
Corrected a calculation problem where the Ghost Iron Dragonling trinket was undervalued because Pawn suggested Cataclysm cogwheels for it instead of Mists of Pandaria cogwheels.  (Thanks durandal42!)
Fixed a minor problem that could occur when using the Compare tab if you used Pawn in the past (or on another computer), then stopped using it, then sold some of your best items, and then started using it again.

Version 1.8

This version of Pawn now works for German and Russian in addition to English.  Big thanks to the translation volunteers Sandmahn and mgotovtsev!  It also has an untested Simplified Chinese translation based on work by bigbamboo.
This version also contains a large number of changes to prepare for German, Russian, and more languages in the future.
Some now-unnecessary information that was being stored in Pawn's SavedVariables file will now be removed when logging out.
Reorganized the Options tab to make it a bit cleaner.  Options for changing the digits of displayed precision for values and for controlling the visibility of (?) icons on tooltips were removed.
Changed a bunch of bits of text throughout Pawn.
Worked around a problem that occurred with Pawn annotations showing up on AtlasLoot items twice.  (To show Pawn annotations on AtlasLoot items, click Options in AtlasLoot and then check Use GameTooltip.)
Added support for the Pyrium Weapon Chain and Living Steel Weapon Chain.
Crystals of Fear will now no longer improperly show (?) on their tooltips.

    Shaman

I absoluly love this addon prolly my favorate but i recently created a Shaman and it shows mage cloth gear as upgrades and doesnt acknowledge that i am a shaman. Just wondering if it is a problem on my end or yours. Thank you again for this awsome product!

Would also like to see advice on enchantments also. That would be a great addition.

Hi!  WoW tracks addon settings based on the name of your character, so if you create a new character with the same name as an older one with a different class, it gets all of the settings of that older character.

To fix things up, open up the Pawn UI, shift-click all of the mage scales in the list to hide them, and then find the shaman scales toward the bottom of the list and shift-click those to add them.  (If you prefer, instead of shift-clicking, you can click each one and then check "show this scale in tooltips" at the bottom of the list.)

    Hope that helps!

Enchantment advice is certainly a possibility for a future version, but it's not a very high priority right now.

I love this addon and use it a lot.  Here are some of the wish-list enhancements I'd like to see.

On a "score" line (like "Enhancement 123.4") I'd like an option that would add a small diamond (and/or anvil) icon if the item was not currently gemmed (and/or reforged) to maximize the Enhancement score.

I'd like a way to see Pawn's reforging suggestions without visiting the reforger.

If an item is not an upgrade, I'd like to know close it is to my current best (don't just show +2%, also show -2%).

Pawn weighs items that produce the best numbers on the weighting scale of choice, irrespective of your overall stats. Sometimes the highest-weighted item is not really the best item for you (e.g. stats with caps or DR). Being able to see a minus-% would be helpful for picking side-grades or finding which downgrade (that gives more needed stats) is the closest second-choice.

I would also really like to have an option to show upgrade % for trinkets with use/equip effects. Currently the only option you have for such trinkets is hiding the (?) icon.

  • #1765

Thanks for the suggestion regarding sidegrades; that's also what I'd be most likely to use it for too.

Trinkets are tough to get right for many reasons (the greatest of which is that the tooltip generally doesn't provide all of the information from the game files that things like Wowhead have access to).  I'd definitely love to do more with them in the future, but right now I'm not sure how I'd manage.

  • #1755

Thanks!  I really like the idea of the gem/anvil icons.  I'd thought about adding some notification to make that case easier to notice and understand, but didn't want the tooltips to be TOO wordy.  (I was also going to make it so that upgrades would show you which item it was an upgrade versus, but then the tooltips looked HUGE.  This seems like a good solution.  Who doesn't love icons?)

I'd like a way to easily see reforging suggestions too.  What I'm currently thinking of is that you'll be able to see the suggested reforgings and gems from the Compare tab, but it'll be easy to use that tab with just one item.

I had definitely considered optionally showing downgrades ("-2%"... though I was originally thinking "98%"), but I didn't think it would be super useful.  What situation do you think you'd use it in?  Knowing that can be helpful in prioritizing.

  • #1754

I've noticed that when you turn in a quests that a lot of times it wouldn't show an item as an upgrade but when you hit the shift key to compare with what you have, it does show it as an upgrade.  Is this normal ?

  • #1756

If you're hitting the problem I'm thinking of, it's that your computer doesn't know the stats of the quest rewards yet, so Pawn doesn't know if any of the items are upgrades.  You can know for sure that's what's going on if there's no coins / "vendor this" icon visible.  Pawn won't show the coins if your computer doesn't have the stats yet for one or more items.

When you hover over the item, your computer gets the stats so Pawn can say it's an upgrade.  Usually this isn't a problem on quest turnin though because your computer will ask the server for the item stats as soon as you pick up the quest, and it only takes a few milliseconds.

Does that sound like the problem you're seeing?  I've got some ideas of how I can work around it, but it's a pretty complicated problem and not something I can easily fix unfortunately.

You might want to work with the current author of the French version of Pawn, which seems reasonably up-to-date.  Perhaps you can combine your work.

Could you include an option to have MH weapon stats (DPS, etc) include both MH and 1H stats?

Likewise, could you include an option to have OH weapon stats include both OH and 1H stats?

This way, as a rogue, I could set up MH and OH scales that include 1-hander weapons that could be used in either hand. Some tweaks to the engine for dual weapons could be useful as well, as currently the gear upgrades simply say 'upgrade for 1h set', and I think it could be improved to say 'upgrade for dual-wield MH' or upgrade for dual-wield OH' for relevant specs.

I am currently trying to work around these issues by having a MH scale (which includes 1H) and a separate OH scale (also including 1H.) It sort of works.

Any suggestions? I am, admittedly, a new Pawn user, but find the addon useful and interesting. Thanks for your work on it!
  • #1749
Based on a quick read through the forums it looks like using two scales for MH and OH weapons might just be confusing at this point.

Scale / stat sites like Mr. Robot or elitistjerks seem to agree that OH DPS should be weighted less than MH DPS relative to other stats. You can use different DPS values for weapons classified as MH and OH, but since 1H weapons can be both MH and OH (and have a separate stat categogry altogether) you can't simply rely on this distinction.

Also, as a sub rogue, if I attempt to use just one scale I run into the problem of non-dagger weapons being recommended as an upgrade if their stats are superior to the dagger main-hand weapon I'm currently using. In my 'two scale' solution I made only daggers eligible for upgrades.

I'm still playing around with it, but if you've seen anything that works for this sort of setup I'm open to suggestions.
  • #1744
Upon further thought, perhaps one way to work around the current issue with multiple scales for MH and OH weapons is to have an option which toggles upgrade suggestions for dual-wielding; you can have Pawn suggest weapons for both slots (its current behavior, which appears to find the best and second best weapons for a given scale), or you can restrict it to suggestions on one slot only (i.e., only suggests upgrades based on the best weapon for a given scale.)
  • #1750
What most people do who want to get really hardcore about it is to use the two-scales method that you described. Ideally Pawn would track two separate values for any scale that included different values for main hand and off-hand DPS, but that would be pretty complicated to set up.
