About Pawn

Pawn calculates scores for items to help you easily find upgrades for your gear. It's completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation: for example, it can help you decide whether to equip the ring with a higher item level but one stat you don't want (say, strength for shamans), or the ring with the lower item level but all good stats. It's that level of customization that makes it very different from more general mods like GearScore and more specialized mods like TankPoints.

Pawn can be used by new players right off the bat without needing to change any options, or by advanced players who plan out their gear upgrades, build Excel spreadsheets, and run simulations.

Language support

Pawn works with English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish (European), Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Unlike most addons, it's NOT possible to use the English version on a language that it doesn't support. (If you're interested in helping translate Pawn into other languages, let me know!)

Pawn will automatically set itself up to work with your characters, but there's a lot that you can do to customize it. See the readme file included with Pawn for more information on getting the most out of Pawn.

If you think you might have found a bug, you can file an official ticket on CurseForge or comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (3) your class and spec if you're using the default Wowhead stat weights. Screenshots are often very helpful as well.

Version 1.9.19

    Pawn now includes data for the Immaculate Taladite epic gems, and will suggest them for items level 695 and up (Mythic Blackrock Foundry / Heroic Hellfire Citadel).

Version 1.9.16

    The "Special effects were not included in the value" message that you'd see at the bottoms of tooltips for trinkets and enchanted weapons has been removed.
    The (?) icon used to indicate special effects on items has been replaced with a small orange diamond (like in Diablo III).
    Support for crystals of fear and sha-touched sockets, cogwheels and cogwheel sockets, and assigning a fixed value to the effect portion of a meta gem (2% chance to restore mana, etc.) have all been removed, as those features are no longer relevant in any current content.

Version 1.9.15

    Pawn will now work with AtlasLoot again.
    Included some improvements to the Portuguese translation.

    Fixed a bug where sometimes Pawn would save over custom key bindings set up by certain addons, such as ElvUI.

    Given their exorbitant cost, Pawn will no longer suggest Greater Taladite gems on gear lower than item level 685 (mythic Highmaul).
    Fixed the problem where some new Draenor wands caused an error to appear in the chat log and did not have their DPS calculated correctly.
    Attempted to fix a problem in Spanish where numbers greater than 1,000 were not read properly.

Version 1.9.8

    New scales from Wowhead have been integrated into Pawn, and the starter scales that Pawn previously included have been removed.
    Includes a new Spanish translation, which is still a work-in-progress.
    Fixed a bug where the socketing advisor would always unhelpfully suggest that you put a gem "of any color" into a prismatic socket.
    Fixed a bug where It was difficult or impossible to change the color of a scale, depending on where the Pawn window is situated.  (It was difficult if the scale list happened to be behind the color window.)
    Fixed a bug where if you opened your chest of Garrison Resources and the last item you won (it showed up in a "you won!" popup) was an upgrade, the Garrison Resources would also show up as an upgrade.  (Hey, maybe you got some Complicated Wood instead of Simple Wood.)
    Removed the code that dealt with Wrathion's Breath of the Black Prince item, which added sockets to certain weapons, but is no longer obtainable by new players and not relevant to current content.

Version 1.9.7

    Strength, Agility, Intellect, and Stamina can't be marked as "unusable" in custom scales.  (Since multiple primary stats are on most armor pieces now, marking those as unusable leads to some confusing and unexpected results.)
    Made a couple small improvements to the French, German, and Traditional Chinese translations.

Version 1.9.6

    Pawn will now no longer suggest gems for items below level 630 (level 100 heroic dungeon).  (This change is particularly noticeable for helms, which had high-value meta sockets at level 90, but not at level 100.)
    Improved the German and Simplified Chinese translations.

Version 1.9.5

    Additional changes to try to prevent the "UseSpecialQuestItem" error from occurring when clicking items in the objectives list.
    More improvements to the Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese translations.

    Dodge and Parry on low-level items will now be treated as if they were Bonus Armor, at a 2:1 ratio.  (40 Parry on an item will be treated as 20 Bonus Armor.)
    Pawn will now once again work with AtlasLoot even when the "Use GameTooltip" AtlasLoot setting is off.  (Release versions only, not the latest AtlasLoot beta.)
    The warrior tank starter scale now properly has a value for bonus armor.
    Included lots of improvements to the Traditional Chinese translation.

    Changed the way that Pawn uses item tooltips, in the hopes that it will prevent issues where the game blocks certain buttons and actions due to "taint."

Version 1.9

    Updated for WoW 6.0 and Warlords of Draenor.  Many features have changed in some way as a result of item changes in patch 6.0.
    I updated the visuals for the Pawn UI to be a little more warlordy.
    A new set of starter scales have been added for all classes and specs.  You can use these scales as you would the old Wowhead scales, and you can also customize them to your heart's content.
    The Wowhead scales have been disabled since they haven't been updated for patch 6.0 and would do more harm than good.
    The values of Pawn's default scale have changed to be a more appropriate starting point for WoW 6.0.
    New stats are recognized and can be assigned values on the Values tab: Bonus Armor, Multistrike, Versatility, Movement Speed, Leech, Avoidance, Indestructible.
    Obsolete stats (hit, etc.) are removed from your scales upon logging in, and have been removed from the UI.
    All of the new Taladite gems in Warlords of Draenor are now in Pawn's database.
    The changes to stats on pre-Draenor gems in Pawn's database have been taken into account for purposes of gem recommendations.  (I anticipate that I'll need to do another update of gem stats before the expansion hits.)
    A new option has been added, on by default: "Ignore sockets on low-level items."  When this option is enabled, Pawn will ignore sockets when calculating values of low-level items (currently, any item below level 463), so they won't have inflated values when Pawn determines upgrades.
    Pawn's calculations for item values no longer take reforging potential into account since that feature is gone from the game.
    All code for Pawn's Reforge Advisor feature has been removed.
    Changed the way that information about your best items for purposes of determining upgrades is stored and processed.  (I now use item links instead of item IDs, since in Warlords of Draenor, a mythic version of one item and the raid finder version of the same item might have the same ID but a different bonus suffix.)

    Hmmm, the green square is what WoW shows when a texture is missing.  Maybe the Russian version of Pawn is missing a file?  You can try restarting WoW or reinstalling Pawn, or you can pick up the beta of Pawn 1.8 that will be available in a few hours—starting with 1.8, one version of Pawn will work on English, German, and Russian.

    There were incorrect path to arrow texture in Russian translation, fixed since 1.8 alpha 4.

    As long I can see your add-on reads the stats in the items.

    If we consider that "Regail's Crackling Dagger", it’s called "Adaga Faiscante de Regail" in Portuguese or "Daga resonante de Regail" in Spanish. Besides the name changes the specs remain the same.
    It’s not possible to use a library that links the name of the items and another with the stats of them in English?

    PS: Your addon its awesome, its only reason that I still play WoW in english. Congratz.

    Glad you like it!  Thanks for the suggestion.  Right now the game doesn't offer a way to reliably get the English stats from an item in a non-English version of WoW, and I don't think that it's a practical solution to try to maintain a massive list of each item in the game and its stats.  The good news, though, is that the next version of Pawn will finally work for English, German, AND Russian, and someday once all of the translations are in order, it should be able to support a wide variety of languages.

    Hi VgerAN, Loving the addon. Got myself upto 90 and taking a good look at its options and such.

    I am however confused regarding its scales, I would presume using the scales provided by AskMrRobot would give my spec the exact numbers i need, however im seeing decimal point values from AMR where Pawn is using wholenumbers.

    I've attempted to search wowhead for any weight values but failing to find anything i can actually use. Any chance you could help me out with this? (preferably how i could use AMR's values in Pawn correctly). Thank you and keep up the great addon.

    Hi!  The scales that come with Pawn are taken directly from Wowhead—the numbers you see in Pawn should closely mirror what you see in the Item Comparison feature in Wowhead.  I've heard that Wowhead now gets its stat weights from Ask Mr. Robot, but I haven't confirmed it.  You can go ahead and use fractional stat numbers with Pawn and it will handle them just fine—21.228273 is just as valid for a stat weight as 73.

    If you'd like to use stat weights from Ask Mr. Robot (or any other online source), here's what I'd suggest:

    1. Choose the built-in scale that matches your class/spec most closely (such as Shaman: restoration).  On the Scale tab, click Copy, and give yours a nice name.
    2. Go to the Values tab, and then replace all of the stat values there with ones from the website or guide you want to follow.

    You can also just start from a completely blank slate in #1, but the advantage of copying an existing scale is that you'll already have all of the item types that you can't use marked as "unusable" (like swords and off-hand weapons for shamans) so Pawn will never show you those items as upgrades.  The disadvantage is that if you miss a stat when typing in values, and your stat values are all things like 1.02 and the built-in ones are all things like 40 or 100, you might get some crazy-weird suggestions.

    Yes, that should work just fine.  I still do recommend that you start with one of the existing scales for the reason I gave, to save a little time, but it's not required.

    If you look at the values, you can see that they are in the same priority order at pretty similar proportions, so the results you'll get from Pawn will be very similar whether you use those numbers from Ask Mr. Robot or the built-in scale.  (Probably the ones on Ask Mr. Robot are either just a little newer than what come with Pawn, or they were built for a character of a different gear level.)

    As you can see the two scales are completly different altogether, so if im understanding it correctly i should just put AMR's values into a custom scale on Pawn and all should be fine?

    Hi!  You can download a German version of Pawn 1.6.9 using the link in the description above.  In 1.8 I've finally produced a "global" version of Pawn and we're working on getting that translated into other languages.  Hopefully it won't be too long until we're done, but there are close to 500 translated bits of text in Pawn to deal with so it's not a trivial project unfortunately.

    I have a strange issue. I am a warlock and I have a raid finder version of Lo'shan, Terror Incarnate with the sha-touched gem socketed. After I socketed the gem pawn reports constantly that it is a huge upgrade for me even when I have it equipped and no other weapons on me. All other 1H weapons that I pick up show as upgrades even when they clearly aren't. It isn't crashing and I don't have this issue with any other slot. Any ideas?
