About Pawn

Pawn calculates scores for items to help you easily find upgrades for your gear. It's completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation: for example, it can help you decide whether to equip the ring with a higher item level but one stat you don't want (say, strength for shamans), or the ring with the lower item level but all good stats. It's that level of customization that makes it very different from more general mods like GearScore and more specialized mods like TankPoints.

Pawn can be used by new players right off the bat without needing to change any options, or by advanced players who plan out their gear upgrades, build Excel spreadsheets, install Rawr, and read Elitist Jerks.

Language support

Pawn works with English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, and Simplified Chinese, and includes an untested translation into Traditional Chinese. Unlike most addons, it's NOT possible to use the English version on a language that it doesn't support. (If you're interested in helping translate Pawn into other languages, let me know!)

Prerelease alpha versions of Pawn are occasionally available on CurseForge.

Getting started

Pawn will automatically set itself up to work with your characters, but there's a lot that you can do to customize it. See the readme file included with Pawn for more information on getting the most out of Pawn.

Version 1.8.11

Made a tweak to make Pawn's Quest Advisor work better with ElvUI.
    Updated Russian and German translations.

Version 1.8.10

The new Timeless, Flexible, Warforged, and Heroic Warforged items will no longer show a (?) next to those terms.

Version 1.8.10a

Actually including the right file this time so the fix described in the notes works.
    New German translation updates.

Version 1.8.10b

New Russian and Simplified Chinese translation updates.

Version 1.8.9

Items that an Eye of the Black Prince can be applied to (Sha-Touched weapons from Heart of Fear and Terrace of Eternal Spring, Level 502 Blacksmithing weapons, and weapons that drop in Throne of Thunder) will be valued assuming that you add the socket to that weapon.  Weapons from heroic scenarios and Siege of Orgrimmar will not.  (Previously only Sha-Touched weapons were correctly being valued in this way.)
Made a few adjustments to try to better handle chest armor that is classified as "robes" by the game.
    Minor changes for patch 5.4.

Version 1.8.8

Fixed some issues with upgrade displays showing incorrect information for wands.
Fixed some issues with upgrade displays showing incorrect information for characters that don't save healing gear but still have a healing scale enabled.

Version 1.8.7

Pawn will now no longer show any weapons other than daggers as upgrades for assassination rogues when using the default Wowhead scales.
Fixed a rare bug that could occur with quests such as Returned Sevenfold that include both a choice of rewards and some guaranteed rewards, where Pawn could incorrectly display upgrade symbols that were intended for the guaranteed rewards on the icons for the reward choices.
Fixed a problem that appears to be new for patch 5.3 where inspecting another player that you're not also targeting would not calculate an average item level for that player's equipment.

Version 1.8.6

Adjusted the values of PvP power and PvP resilience on MoP-quality gems to their new (halved) values.
    Added Tense Imperial Amethyst.

Version 1.8.5

A few minor changes to work around a rare issue where Pawn would load files in a different order on some machines.

Version 1.8.4

Priests will no longer incorrectly see bows, crossbows, and guns as potential upgrades when using the built-in Wowhead scales.

Version 1.8.3

Sha-touched items from Heart of Fear and Terrace of Eternal Spring (all difficulties) will now always be valued (for base value) as if you've completed Wrathion's Chapter II questline and can add a prismatic socket to the item.
Added a Brailian Portuguese translation.  Thanks maxmag!
Includes minor updates to the other translations.
Fixed a couple minor display issues on the Compare tab when one item had sockets and the other did not.
Thunderforged and Heroic Thunderforged items on the English PTR will no longer show (?) on their tooltips.

Version 1.8.2

Fixed a bug in average item level calculations when inspecting hunters.  (Their ranged weapons were only getting counted for half the appropriate level.)
The Reforging Advisor will now also show up when you right-click an item while talking to an arcane reforger.

Version 1.8.1

This version of Pawn now includes French support, thanks to translation volunteers othor and Snuff, and an untested Traditional Chinese translation based on work by BNSSNB.
Reduced Pawn's memory usage by about 35% (at least on my PC) by optimizing the way translations are loaded.  Pawn's memory usage should return to about where it was back when it was for a single language only.
Corrected a calculation problem where the Ghost Iron Dragonling trinket was undervalued because Pawn suggested Cataclysm cogwheels for it instead of Mists of Pandaria cogwheels.  (Thanks durandal42!)
Fixed a minor problem that could occur when using the Compare tab if you used Pawn in the past (or on another computer), then stopped using it, then sold some of your best items, and then started using it again.

Version 1.8

This version of Pawn now works for German and Russian in addition to English.  Big thanks to the translation volunteers Sandmahn and mgotovtsev!  It also has an untested Simplified Chinese translation based on work by bigbamboo.
This version also contains a large number of changes to prepare for German, Russian, and more languages in the future.
Some now-unnecessary information that was being stored in Pawn's SavedVariables file will now be removed when logging out.
Reorganized the Options tab to make it a bit cleaner.  Options for changing the digits of displayed precision for values and for controlling the visibility of (?) icons on tooltips were removed.
Changed a bunch of bits of text throughout Pawn.
Worked around a problem that occurred with Pawn annotations showing up on AtlasLoot items twice.  (To show Pawn annotations on AtlasLoot items, click Options in AtlasLoot and then check Use GameTooltip.)
Added support for the Pyrium Weapon Chain and Living Steel Weapon Chain.
Crystals of Fear will now no longer improperly show (?) on their tooltips.

I will have an eye on whether this happens only with items with 'robe' in their name and report back. Seems to be the case though, because I just stumbled on another 'robe' item as quest reward and it only shows arrows. Thanks for reply!

Hi, I was wondering if I'm the only one having this problem or if it's just such an easy fix that I'm overlooking it.

But my issue is that while using this addon when I look at a piece of gear it is giving me very innacurate stats. For example on my Blood DK while leveling my Stat weight for 1 Dodge is 77, but when I look at say the early Wrath Justice Point tank trinket that has 84 Dodge it gives it a ranking of just 15.8 and says my current DPS trinket is much better which is beyond me since I'm using the Heirloom trinket with Haste which is another Stat that isn't being recognized for me either. Please any help would be appreciated.

Sorry, I can't reproduce the problem you're describing.  Can you include a screenshot?

Is it perhaps that the problem is you're looking at the wrong scale when comparing?

    Re: Blazecaster's Wand

"Error: Weapon with mismatched or missing speed and damage stats was not converted to DPS"

I'm getting this error with "Blazecaster's Wand" (quest reward: http://www.wowhead.com/item=82590). I think it's the Fire Damage on it that's causing a problem because it's listed as "Special effects not included in the value."

    Thanks for the great addon!

Hi!  What language are you using WoW in?  Blazecaster's Wand works fine for me in English, but I can check the translation.  If you can include a screenshot of the wand's tooltip that'd be great.  Thanks!

Thanks!  That's perfect.  A couple issues here:

    • Pawn is showing the Claws as an upgrade for your healing set, not your DPS set.  Since it appears that you don't actually have a set of healing gear, you should turn off the mistweaver (and presumably brewmaster) scales.  Open Pawn, and then shift-click mistweaver to turn it off, or click it and then uncheck "show this scale in tooltips."
    • Regardless, the Claws is still showing up with a higher value, which is certainly odd.  It looks like the reason is that the Wowhead stat weights for monks don't take weapon DPS into account at all, which seems like a bad idea to me.  Without that extra large chunk of DPS, the Claws actually are better by quite a bit, since Pawn assumes that you'll have the Crystal of Fear gem to put in it.  You can see similar results on Wowhead, though the raw numbers are different.  I don't know much about monk gearing, but I imagine that weapon DPS being ignored is just an oversight on their part, and you may want to ignore Pawn upgrade notifications for weapons on your monk for now.  Or you can make a custom scale; if you used values similar to what other DPS classes use, those ToT weapons would definitely come out as the winner.
  • #2248

If you want to try out making a custom scale, open the Scales tab, choose "Monk: windwalker", and click Copy.  Give your new scale a name ("My windwalker" or something), and then go to the Values tab.  Try ~100 for weapon DPS.  Then see if that gives you better results.

You could also try opening up Ask Mr. Robot for your class and clicking Edit Weights to see what weights Mr. Robot suggests for each stat.  (That's how I came up with a rough value for weapon DPS.  Note that Ask Mr. Robot's numbers are a much lower scale than Wowhead's, so you can't just pop in 5.2 and expect reasonable results when the other weights are things like 100 and 75.)  Or use whatever your favorite gearing site / post / etc. suggests for stat weights.

    Hope that helps!

  • #2247

Thank you so much, after i rescanned my gear its comming up as a 45% upgrade for the windwalker set those fist weapons even beat out the Best in slot for the game for this expansion hope it will  be fixed soon the dps increase between the weapons i have is alot but thanks again for the quick replys.

  • #2243

Will this addon be updated anytime soon, i love this addon for sure and use it every drop, but yet on my dwwindwalker monk it is saying that Claws of Shek'zeer are the best thing out there and when equipt vs to having 502 on my dps drops by at least 20k.  when i have my 502 mace and axe on its says the Claws of Shek'zeer are an up by 47% but yet don't put out the same dps as the two 502 weapons.

  • #2244

The latest version of Pawn contains the latest stat weights from Wowhead.  It sounds like those are just particularly inaccurate for your character.  You can consider creating a custom weight scale using numbers from something that analyzes your character's actual gear, like Ask Mr. Robot.

Other possibilities are that you're accidentally looking at upgrade numbers for a different spec; maybe the Claws of Shek'zeer are better for healing or something.  (Obviously you wouldn't use them for that, but it could be that's what you're seeing.)

To better analyze what's going on, I'd need some screenshots, or a few more details—specific items including their item levels, and which scale(s) you have enabled for your character.

  • #2241

this addon got some realy odd suggestions tbh.. my dk is 2h frost and it suggests that i should reforge everything into exp.. when checking with wowreforge, mrrobot and other sites all tells me i dont need more than 7.5% exp but this addon says i should get as much as possible..

  • #2242

7.5% is your expertise cap, yes; don't continue to reforge other stats to expertise when you're above 7.5%.  You can reduce the value of expertise in your scale on the Values tab to prevent it from showing up in the reforge advisor.  Assuming you're using the built-in Wowhead scales, you'd need to first make a copy of the built-in scale on the Scales tab, and then you can modify it to your heart's content.

The built-in scales from Wowhead are all based on "average" characters, and aren't as tailored to your character as what you'll get from something like Mr. Robot, as they don't take your gear's stats into account in any way.  So alternately, you can just ignore the reforge and gemming suggestions from Pawn and go with what Mr. Robot tells you; it should be more accurate.  You can turn those little advisor popups off in Pawn's options if you don't want to see them.

The game is full of soft caps.  Preference and play style usually determine the soft caps, but there are required caps for stats such as HIt.  You may want to add a list for stats such as Spirit, Hit, Haste, Dodge, Parry ... etc.

When a person upgrades to the new version, all the softcaps will be 0, and the program will work using the current stat values.  For the items where a softcap has been defined, there needs to be a second value ... the value given to the stat below the softcap.  To get an idea of the method, play around with:

    http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/gear

They have a system of adjusting softcaps and evaluating.  It is what I use to optimize my statistics while reforging.  By gemming and reforging according to their optimization, it gets all of my stats exactly to the softcaps and increases all other stats to their maximum values.

Currently, my gear level is high enough that I just use the over softcap values in Pawn.  If I were not at those levels ... it would be a great help to have Pawn recognize them and evaluate the gear depending on my current need.

SPIRIT SOFTCAP? HERESY! ONE CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH SPIRIT!  ALL SPIRIT!

Yeah, I use Ask Mr. Robot from time to time.  Most likely at some point I will add softcap features.  Before that can happen, I need to make it so that you can associate a scale with one of a character's gear sets in some fashion, so that Pawn can make those decisions based on the correct gear and not just whatever you happen to be wearing at the moment (or the feature wouldn't be useful for hybrid classes).  Definitely would like to do it; just need to find the time to design and build.  :)
