About Pawn

Pawn calculates scores for items to help you easily find upgrades for your gear. It's completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation: for example, it can help you decide whether to equip the ring with a higher item level but one stat you don't want (say, strength for shamans), or the ring with the lower item level but all good stats. It's that level of customization that makes it very different from more general mods like GearScore and more specialized mods like TankPoints.

Pawn can be used by new players right off the bat without needing to change any options, or by advanced players who plan out their gear upgrades, build Excel spreadsheets, install Rawr, and read Elitist Jerks.

Language support

Pawn works with English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, and Simplified Chinese, and includes an untested translation into Traditional Chinese. Unlike most addons, it's NOT possible to use the English version on a language that it doesn't support. (If you're interested in helping translate Pawn into other languages, let me know!)

Staying in touch

Become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there if you don't have an account on this site.

Prerelease alpha versions of Pawn are occasionally available on CurseForge.

Getting started

Pawn will automatically set itself up to work with your characters, but there's a lot that you can do to customize it. See the readme file included with Pawn for more information on getting the most out of Pawn.

Version 1.9.2

Continued changes to the starter scales and translations.

Version 1.9.1

Bonus armor is now listed as a separate stat from base armor and can be given a value independently.
Significantly increased the value of armor and bonus armor in the tank starter scales.
Fixed a harmless error where a message about #(Item1.UnknownLines could appear in the chat log when using the Compare tab.
Fixed a harmless error where a message about being unable to parse the item link could appear in the chat log when hovering over a caged battle pet.

Version 1.9

Updated for WoW 6.0 and Warlords of Draenor.  Many features have changed in some way as a result of item changes in patch 6.0.
I updated the visuals for the Pawn UI to be a little more warlordy.
A new set of starter scales have been added for all classes and specs.  You can use these scales as you would the old Wowhead scales, and you can also customize them to your heart's content.
The Wowhead scales have been disabled since they haven't been updated for patch 6.0 and would do more harm than good.
The values of Pawn's default scale have changed to be a more appropriate starting point for WoW 6.0.
New stats are recognized and can be assigned values on the Values tab: Bonus Armor, Multistrike, Versatility, Movement Speed, Leech, Avoidance, Indestructible.
Obsolete stats (hit, etc.) are removed from your scales upon logging in, and have been removed from the UI.
All of the new Taladite gems in Warlords of Draenor are now in Pawn's database.
The changes to stats on pre-Draenor gems in Pawn's database have been taken into account for purposes of gem recommendations.  (I anticipate that I'll need to do another update of gem stats before the expansion hits.)
A new option has been added, on by default: "Ignore sockets on low-level items."  When this option is enabled, Pawn will ignore sockets when calculating values of low-level items (currently, any item below level 463), so they won't have inflated values when Pawn determines upgrades.
Pawn's calculations for item values no longer take reforging potential into account since that feature is gone from the game.
All code for Pawn's Reforge Advisor feature has been removed.
Changed the way that information about your best items for purposes of determining upgrades is stored and processed.  (I now use item links instead of item IDs, since in Warlords of Draenor, a mythic version of one item and the raid finder version of the same item might have the same ID but a different bonus suffix.)

If you want to keep a set of bear gear around in case you change your mind, or if you think you'd occasionally want it while questing, keep the feral bear spec visible. But if you're pretty sure you want to stick with balance, you can just turn all of the others off and save yourself some complexity and tooltip clutter.

I've experienced that "UseAction Tainted execution blah blah" error once or twice from Pawn as well.

Taking a look at the World of Warcraft Interface Addon Kit, you can see that the trace is 100% correct. UseAction is used inside of the "action" handler that is called by the OnClick method of the SecureActionButton... that is called by the ActionButtonUp, which in turn is called from within an XML bindings list for ACTIONBUTTON1-12. The trace shows ACTIONBUTTON2 or ACTIONBUTTON3 as the button responsible for calling the ActionButtonUp function.

Pawn does use Bindings, which I think is related to this error appearing. It may be due to a conflict with another mod, or a conflict between using the same key for two bindings (if possible in wow), or it could very well be an issue on Blzzard's side.

To people getting this error, you get it after pushing a button on your actionbar? Do you get this error every time you press da button, or is it once in a while? Is this button is a macrobutton? What actionbar/button# is it on?

Oh -- and VgerAN, Pawn seems to think that a FishingPole is an upgrade to the Lich King Daggers I used to have and all of the new Cataclysm blue daggers I've gotten. Rogues don't even use 2-handers as primary weapons, lol, let alone fishing poles for fighting. I think Fishing Poles should be excluded from upgrade checks and scoring.

    Hope you're enjoying Cataclysm,
    Kazamiko of Earthen Ring

I got the taint problem VERY often (at least every day - when I re-enable Pawn, it usually takes 2-3 hours to taint again.

I'm using standard Blizz action bars, and I press the keyboard key when I get the taint - but after taint, I cannot click on the button with the mouse as well (I'm not a clicker so no idea if this happens when I actually click). Buttons used are from 1 to 0...
  • #1344
The silliness with fishing poles for rogues is fixed in 1.5.3. :) Pawn's suggesting the fishing pole as an upgrade to your best 2H weapon, not your 1H weapons.

I am having trouble with the green upgrade arrow and the coin icons showing up on my wife's pc. She has an exact copy of my addons folder (as that is how I keep her up to date). She has the exact same options set as me, but they will show up on my qst turn ins, but not hers.

    Any ideas?

Thank you in advance for a great addon!
  • #1343
I'm not sure what would cause that. So far in Vashj'ir and Hyjal I've noticed a few sporadic cases where the arrows weren't appearing, but it was only a couple times.

What classes are you? Are you using the built-in Wowhead scales? The only time that you shouldn't see one of those two icons is if there is a trinket in the available rewards; trinkets are a special case and can't be valued easily, so Pawn doesn't try to suggest anything when a trinket is available.
  • #1338
Does Pawn now account for the fact that Spirit counts as hitrating for certain classes, i.e. balance of power for boomkins.
  • #1342
Yes, the Wowhead scales that are included with Pawn take this into account, even though the Wowhead site currently doesn't.
  • #1337
In fight, I can't use Keybindings while Pawn is active. Screenshot:

and...request for enchants^^ Only a few waepon enchants are incalculable.
  • #1347
This randomly happens to me as well. It will work for a while, then randomly this error will show up. If I'm not using Pawn much at the moment I'll just disable it and enable it the next time I log on. It will usually work for a few days at a time without any issues.
  • #1333
I got this error while attempting to use a simple macro:
    /cast Swift Flight Form

I tried to cast this while it was grayed out (i.e. I could not fly in the location I was at) Subsequent attempts to push the button do nothing. I have to reload the UI for it to work again. This error has occurred a couple times.

Thanks for including the macro! (Peculiar. Why do you use that instead of just going into flight form directly?) I haven't been able to reproduce this, and Pawn doesn't actually use "UseAction" as indicated (wouldn't be the first time I've seen that message with incorrect information), but I'm continuing to look into it.

This error occurs reliably after visiting a reforger. Any attempt to use a macro (any macro) after visiting a reforger will result in this error message and cause all macros to become unusable until a /reloadui is performed. I cannot say for certain, but I do not believe I have observed this error in any other situation. I can say that disabling Pawn eliminates this error, though I have not tried running Pawn alone in the absence of other addons.

    Hope that helps!

The default settings in Pawn 1.5 don't put values on tooltips for items that aren't better than your current gear. Try checking an upgrade (using AtlasLoot or a Wowhead link or inspect someone), or you can click "Show values and upgrade %" on the Options tab.
