About Pawn

Pawn calculates scores for items to help you easily find upgrades for your gear. It's completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation: for example, it can help you decide whether to equip the ring with a higher item level but one stat you don't want (say, strength for shamans), or the ring with the lower item level but all good stats. It's that level of customization that makes it very different from more general mods like GearScore and more specialized mods like TankPoints.

Pawn can be used by new players right off the bat without needing to change any options, or by advanced players who plan out their gear upgrades, build Excel spreadsheets, install Rawr, and read Elitist Jerks.

Language support

Pawn works with English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, and Simplified Chinese, and includes an untested translation into Traditional Chinese. Unlike most addons, it's NOT possible to use the English version on a language that it doesn't support. (If you're interested in helping translate Pawn into other languages, let me know!)

Prerelease alpha versions of Pawn are occasionally available on CurseForge.

Getting started

Pawn will automatically set itself up to work with your characters, but there's a lot that you can do to customize it. See the readme file included with Pawn for more information on getting the most out of Pawn.

Version 1.9.2

Continued changes to the starter scales and translations.

Version 1.9.1

Bonus armor is now listed as a separate stat from base armor and can be given a value independently.
Significantly increased the value of armor and bonus armor in the tank starter scales.
Fixed a harmless error where a message about #(Item1.UnknownLines could appear in the chat log when using the Compare tab.
Fixed a harmless error where a message about being unable to parse the item link could appear in the chat log when hovering over a caged battle pet.

Version 1.9

Updated for WoW 6.0 and Warlords of Draenor.  Many features have changed in some way as a result of item changes in patch 6.0.
I updated the visuals for the Pawn UI to be a little more warlordy.
A new set of starter scales have been added for all classes and specs.  You can use these scales as you would the old Wowhead scales, and you can also customize them to your heart's content.
The Wowhead scales have been disabled since they haven't been updated for patch 6.0 and would do more harm than good.
The values of Pawn's default scale have changed to be a more appropriate starting point for WoW 6.0.
New stats are recognized and can be assigned values on the Values tab: Bonus Armor, Multistrike, Versatility, Movement Speed, Leech, Avoidance, Indestructible.
Obsolete stats (hit, etc.) are removed from your scales upon logging in, and have been removed from the UI.
All of the new Taladite gems in Warlords of Draenor are now in Pawn's database.
The changes to stats on pre-Draenor gems in Pawn's database have been taken into account for purposes of gem recommendations.  (I anticipate that I'll need to do another update of gem stats before the expansion hits.)
A new option has been added, on by default: "Ignore sockets on low-level items."  When this option is enabled, Pawn will ignore sockets when calculating values of low-level items (currently, any item below level 463), so they won't have inflated values when Pawn determines upgrades.
Pawn's calculations for item values no longer take reforging potential into account since that feature is gone from the game.
All code for Pawn's Reforge Advisor feature has been removed.
Changed the way that information about your best items for purposes of determining upgrades is stored and processed.  (I now use item links instead of item IDs, since in Warlords of Draenor, a mythic version of one item and the raid finder version of the same item might have the same ID but a different bonus suffix.)

SPIRIT SOFTCAP? HERESY! ONE CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH SPIRIT!  ALL SPIRIT!

Yeah, I use Ask Mr. Robot from time to time.  Most likely at some point I will add softcap features.  Before that can happen, I need to make it so that you can associate a scale with one of a character's gear sets in some fashion, so that Pawn can make those decisions based on the correct gear and not just whatever you happen to be wearing at the moment (or the feature wouldn't be useful for hybrid classes).  Definitely would like to do it; just need to find the time to design and build.  :)

Is there still the version of 3.3.5? since I can't manage to find it over the web.

    only in german and russian.

  • #2238

No, Pawn is only available for current versions of WoW.

I really like Pawn a lot! It helps me make fast decisions on upgrading my equipment. It works  great together with my addon MoncaiCompare :)

absolutely awesome addon! i just wanted to thank you for making such a helpful and customizable adoon. i would feel lost without it.it takes a lot of the tedious stuff i do outside the game and makes everything very easy to figure out what truly is best for my character given my parameters or situation.

keep up the good work. thank you so much! *bows*

Thanks!  Glad you like it.  :)

When I moved my warlock to different realm (name stayed the same), pawn is unable to show the scales in item tooltips and do proper search in auction house's search->pawn. In auction search->pawn there are no scales which i can choose. Also by default it suggested leather rather than cloth. And items which it suggested weren't lvl 90s either (the lock is lvl 90, with blue and epic gear), and pawn suggested some item level 22 greens.

Using the latest pawn available from here.

Can you try the suggestion in the post directly below yours (shift+clicking scales)?  It sounds like you reused a character name that was previously a rogue or druid or monk and Pawn didn't correctly detect it.

Hmmm, okay.  That's bizarre.  I'm not sure what to suggest.  If you delete your character's Pawn saved variables file, as in...

    ...World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\your account name\Azjol-Nerub\Vger\SavedVariables\Pawn.lua

...then maybe that would help.  There's almost nothing at all in it; that won't affect any of your scales.

Deleting those files fixed the issue, cheers.

    Hi,

When I tryed that suggestion the content of that dropdown list were still empty.

    Interesting problem:

I created a new character and deleted it after a few levels.

Created a character with same name but different class.

Pawn is the only addon that did not adjust to the new class.

Found no way to reset the pawn, and changing the scale only changes it for that time.

    Please help..

  • #2226

Can you explain what you mean by "changing the scale only changes it for that time?"

Normally, if you create a new character with the same name and realm but different class as an older one, Pawn should detect that and show you different scales.  But if it doesn't, you can shift-click the scales you don't want to see to turn them off and the ones you do want to see to turn them on.  (Or, instead of shift-clicking, select the scale and then check/uncheck "Show scale in tooltips".)

  • #2229

The PerCharacterOptions message (or anything that starts with a pink "Error") is meant for developers and is never something that you should need to address directly.  As far as how to get rid of that message, I'm at a loss at the moment, unless you're using other addons that interact with Pawn, in which case you should try disabling them and see if that makes a difference.  That message SHOULD never happen, but some PCs load Pawn in a strange order for some reason and that's what's going on.

Choosing a different scale in the Scales tab (or anywhere else in the Pawn UI) just lets you do things with the scale like renaming it and changing the color, nothing else, so it's perfectly normal that you'd have to do that every time you open Pawn.

  • #2227

The original class was priest and the new one warlock.

Pawn did NOT detect the switch and every time I open it it shows options of Holy or Disc ...

When I select scale of Destruction warlock in SCALES tab it only lasts for that session.

Shift clicking changed the scales - thanks (did not see it before - my bad).

I am still getting "PerCharacterOptions should be initialized" and cannot find where to do it. The options tab seems to be general.
