About Rotation Builder

With the new release 1.50, we had to fix lot of bugs, so it is recommended to delete old saved variables of RotationBuilder. Just go in WTF directory (in WoW installation directory), use windows file search for files with name "RotationBuilder*", then delete them.

As the original author soulwhip discontinued this addon and we simply loved it, we decided to bring it back. There is still a lot of work to be done (you may take a look at the current todo list below)

You can help us with localizations by going there : RotationBuilder Localization page. Be careful when translating phrases from the overview interface : rotations localizations are too big to be shown properly in it. You will have to edit them individually.

Rotation Builder allows you to build rotations dynamically without having to understand the Lua script language. The built rotation then displays the current action and the next action on your screen to tell you what to push next. Actions can be heavily customized with the General, Player, Target, and Pet tabs. The priority of actions can also be changed dynamically just by clicking the up and down arrows next to the action name in the Action list.

Note that none of these rotations were tested as we currently don't have any high level characters!

To load the latest rotation just click on the options tab in the top left and click the LOAD button. The latest version of the rotations will be imported. You will have to delete old default rotations before.

TO DO List:

  1. Fix the logic that select the current and next actions as it doesn't seems to work properly anymore
  2. Add a new column to rotation builder display where we'll put high cool-down spells in a list so that the player know they're available instead of forcing there use on bosses and bosses only. Maybe make those icons flash if rotational conditions are present to alert the player that the spell is ready and is at optimal efficiency while still giving player freedom to use them or not
  3. Make some buff and debuff lists (probably hard-coded so that the user don't have to bother updating them) so that you can use the list name instead of listing every buff or debuff that have similar effects every time you wish to check it.
  4. Make a complete overhaul of the add-on once it's up to date to make it more efficient, use less frame-rate, easier to understand, ...

How to build a rotation:

  1. Open your blizzard key-binds window and scroll down to find Rotation Builders key-binds
  2. For now just bind the Toggle 1 through Toggle 4 to some keys. This will be explained later.
  3. Show the rotation builder window with /rob show or using the mini-map button
  4. Default rotations should be provided for your class under the Rotation Name box in
    the upper left. If there are no rotations then I haven't gotten around to making a default
    one for you yet ;)
  5. You can modify an existing rotation by left clicking on it or creating a new one with the
    create button.
  6. Once you have the rotation selected click the modify button to go into the edit mode.
  7. Once you are in edit mode you can change the rotation name and edit/add/re-arrange Actions.
  8. You need to set the key-bind that selects this rotation by left clicking the key-bind
    button at the top of the window under the rotation name box.
  9. To select a Action just left click the action name in the top right Action list box.
  10. All the options for the selected action are in the three tabs below General,Player,Target
    If you mouse-over each option it will tell you what it does.
  11. Once you are done editing your Actions and Rotation click the Save button.
  12. You can close the rotation window now and to select that rotation hit the button you bound
    in step 8.
  13. At this point you should have two icons displayed from your rotation. The top one is the
    current action and the bottom one is the next action.


  • Q: What are toggles?
    A: Toggles are a way to change your rotation dynamically with a keybind.

    Example: There is a boss fight where if you cleanse yourself you blow up the raid.
    What you can do is put cleanse in your rotation but check the toggle box.
    Set the Toggle to Toggle 1 so the cleanse icon will only show up if Toggle 1
    is turned on. Now when you get to that boss in the raid you can turn off cleanse
    by hitting the key you bound to Toggle 1 in the blizzard keybinds.

  • Q: Why is my Spell X not working?
    A: More than likely you spelled something wrong or blizzard functions arent finding your spell.
    Here is what you can do to see why your action is not showing.

    1. Open the blizzard keybinds and scroll down to find the Rotation Builder keybind
    for Toggle Debug and bind it to a key.
    2. Now edit your rotation and click on the General tab of the action that is not working.
    3. Click the Debug check box on the far right for that action.
    4. Save the rotation.
    5. Turn on debug with the key you bound in step 1. You will see a DEBUG ON message in chat.
    6. Go through your rotation until you hit your action that is not working.
    7. The chat window will spam why the action is not displaying.
    8. For example. If it says NOT showing A: youractionname S: spellname because its out of
    range then that means you are checking range but you shouldn't be on self buffs.
  • Q: Debug says X does not have buffs or debuffs?
    A: The buff and debuff name matching can be a pain, try using the spell name first. If the spell name isnt matching to the buff you can turn on your combat log to get the actual spellID to use instead.

  • Q: How do I get rid of an existing rotation so I can import a rotation with the same name?
    A: You have two options:
    1. Delete the rotation with the same name.
    2. Modify the rotation blocking the import.
    Rename the rotation to something else.
    Click Save.
    Delete the old copy of the rotation.
    Reclick Import or reclick the LOAD button.

  • Q: Why is the next action showing spells ready when they are not ready?
    A: The next action prediction logic ignores power type checks such as mana, energy ,rage by default. This gives you the option to show what is coming up regardless if you have the power to cast it. If you don't like to see next actions when you dont have the power to cast them you can specify a power requirement on the action in the player tab and the action will no longer show up in the next action if you dont meet the specified power.

- Fixed a whole lot of API calls that blizzard changed since Cataclysm
- Fixed the debug option that wasn't working since Cataclysm
- The GCD Spell is no longer used (though not yet removed from the interface) and instead a brand new function calculate the gcd at each update to account for haste procs, potions and buffs.
- The icon option is no longer needed to get the spell icon but can still be used if you want to display another icon instead of the spell.

- TODO : Redo every single rotations since none of them work as intended due to all the changes done, maybe i'll even throw in some rotations for the healer specs so that they can DPS when bored or while questing.
- TODO : Redo the death knight rune system so that it's more flexible.
- TODO : Finish reworking the current and next action logic to account for ressources generation (be they mana, chi, combo points, runes or whatever the ressource actually is)
- TODO : Lot of small improvements that are class specific.

Just so you know we're still working on this addon, i'm currently in the process of leveling all eleven classes to 100 and i'm almost done (i need them at level 100 to properly test the rotations), after that it's back to working on every rotations, i'll fix issues as i go class by class has i took note of every thing while leveling.

    Sorry for the delay on the update, I got a bit sidetracted with some games i bought recently but the real reason is that my internet provider is currently having issues and the speed of my connection have been greatly reduced for over 2 weeks now. It's current speed is too slow to download anything, much less play online games. It's like i'm back on an old 512KB/s modem which is still better than an 56KB/s but not neartly enougth to play modern MMOs.

    I'm looking forward to the update! :-)

    I have been using this addon for a long time now and I love it. I like tweaking the rotations. Right now, though, it tells me that I don't have Frost Strike in my spellbook on my DK. Same kind of thing is happening on my Pally.

    Yes the issue your experiencing is due to some of the changes i made, and the reason i can't get the current version of Rotation Builder out without redoing every rotations.

    Now for your problem with frost strike, it's because frost strike really is not in your spellbook. There is a spell called Frost Strike in your spellbook but it's id is in reality the one of the spell Death Coil which was replaced by Frost Strike when you choose this specialization. To fix this(somewhat, it's not perfect) in the currently available version, you just have to put the id of Death Coil in the spell ID box which is 47541 and the ID of Frost Strike in the box bellow if i remember properly. It''ll not be perfect since Rotation Builder will gather the data from the wrong spell but at least it'll be displayed in the rotation.

    There are similar issues with every classes, there should be a button under the rotation name in Rotation Builder to print all IDs from your spellbook.

    This issue which break every rotations in the update i'm working on is due to the changes i made to check if a player know a spell of not. I tried to get a 100% accurate way to check if a player know a spell, especially to check spells added by talents or glyphs (as well as by leveling but those don't really matter as those rotations are made for player at max level). I managed to more or less do it but it did cause issues. The rotations that will come out with the next update will work properly since i'm testing them properly now that i have all eleven classes at level 100.

    For the next extension Legion i might actually create characters on an up-to-date free private server at max level to not waste months leveling 12 classes.

    Here are some good news to those who still use this add-on (and bother to read this). The (probably) last update before the next WoW extension Legion is going well. I'm going once more over all eleven classes fixing all those rotations since i now have all eleven classes at level 100 to test them properly while also adding brand new rotations for those healer specs, as if i'm reading things right, they'll be able to properly dps in the next extension when there's nothing to heal.

    Due to some changes we've done to the addon we can't roll out this update until i'm done as it'll simply break every current rotations. Right now only mages, priests and rogues rotations are done and i'm currently working on the warlock. I can't give you a release date since i'm doing this class by class and i expect several to give me trouble, especially the death knight and to a lesser extent hunter and warlock.

    I do hope to be done before christmas and if not before new year though.

    This is a great addon, thanks for your works!But, I have a Mage Frost and I had a problem wih the rotation. When I checked the stacks in the spell Ice Nova, I got a LUA error (the addon try to compare number with nil).

    That happens because the standard rotation use 622 as spellID of Ice Nova. 622 is the SpellID from the SpellsBook, which is wrong (thanks, Blizzard :) That is the spellID of Frost Nova, which is changed by a talent to Ice Nova (right spellID = 157997).

    So when you check the stacks in your addon, the function return nil, because Frost Nova doesn't have stacks.

    I changed the spellID in the rotation to 157997, but it didn't work, because the addon check the spellid in the spellbook!

    After a lot of testing I found a solution. I had to change a bit the addon: I have changed the function IsSpellKnown (RotationBuilder.lua - line 2868) and now I can use the right SpellID in the rotation.

    Yes, we know this error, there are similar problems with all classes. It actually is one of the 4 things we are currently working on.

    The problem is simple, to check whether the character know a spell or has a specific talent, we have to check the spellbook. But the spells in the spellbook, as you've noticed, are not always the right ones. They are the original spells that are replaced either by specialization specific spells or talents (Which mean that the informations returned are not always correct).

    Thus we are in the process of changing the GCD spell field (no longer used) to put the spell ID while the current spell ID field will became the spellbook ID field. Once we are done with this fix and 2 of the 3 other updates, it's back to fixing all rotations to use all the fixes we have been doing while leveling all eleven classes to 100 (which is done now mostly by Tylorcaptain). The 4th update being a long term work to rewrite the whole next action logic to properly predict the next action (procs excluded since we can't predict procs).

    Do try with the latest alpha that i commited today and tell me if you still get an error. Rotations are still not up-to-date but a lot of error have been fixed. You should also probably delete the default rotations and import them again so that they're clean (it should be done after each update)

    If it still doesn't work do post the error message again.

    FInally found what i think is the source of most problems currently in rotation builder, some wow api functions that have ben changed with patch 6.0, unfortunately it'll take time to fix since these are used everywhere and we must make sure not to miss any.

    Now as for the rotations, i know that not all of them works as intended, i'll fix that overtime as i test them properly and fix things in rotation builder. Just so you now there shouldn't be any changes with the 6.2.2 patch.

    I see there have been alpha updates in the last 2 days is rotation builder making a come back? and if so will it be around for a while or is it likely to go back into Hibernation. While I realize this may sound rude it is not my intention but more a case of me not wanting to get my hopes up.

    testing rotation builder on my Enh Shammy I noticed that you must have a target in order for it to appear you might want to have a way for ppl to have it show always or only if hostile and stuff like that, also atm the icons disappear if you move this is something that needs to be addressed as melee need to be able to move and cast at the same time.

    As reply by Tylorcaptain on Curse Forge, we are trying to resurrect Rotation Builder so it can work on the current version of WoW. But, we won't be able to manage all rotations efficiently as we just began to play again…

    Currently, we are working to transform rotation builder into a "core" addon on which other addons can plug themselves to add new rotations. This should allow other people to provide rotations with the help of an addon per class.

    The problem you encountered will be fixed in the next alpha version.

    Hi guys, just passing by to clear things up.

    Don't expect any update to the rotations since I and Pelerinage stopped playing WoW. But as soulwhip (the original author of this addon) probably already said (although i haven't checked). He is working on a successor to Rotation Builder named Nemo available here :

    So if you want up-to-date rotations you should probably switch to his new mod or try to update them yourselves by taking into account all the changes that came with patch 5.2 and 5.3 (and 5.1 for those rotations that are still stucked at version 5.0.4).

    I'm sure he'll be more than happy with the feedback you'll provide on his new addon and will keep up the good work.

    I am a druid boomkin, let me say that this addon is terrific! It has increased my DPS by around 25%! Needless to say, now I'm addicted to Rotation Builder. Sometimes I have to not use it though because a Pally will keep casting Blessing of Kings, then RB doesn't work because it thinks it has to have MotW. Can you make RB so it doesn't matter which buff is cast? or, tell me how to implement that myself someway? Or, is there a way to block the Pally's Blessing of Kings? Thanks and keep up the good work on this addon! Soulworship

    I appreciate the comments. Nemo v14 has boomkin. Give it a try and let me know if anything is wrong. I don't check for raid buffs in any of the Nemo rotations so the Blessing of Kings problem should be gone.
