About SilverDragon

SilverDragon tracks rares. It will try everything possible to notice them and tell you about them.

I, as its author, have precisely one quirk: I like a minimal starting experience. That means that by default SilverDragon doesn't know about any rare mobs, and will just learn about them when you encounter new ones. If you want more advance warning, just go to the "Mobs" section of SilverDragon's options and either enter a few mobs you want to look for, or click "import data" to pull in a complete list of every known rare mob and its locations.

How does it search?

Those little skull icons you see on the minimap. If one of them is a rare SilverDragon knows about, it'll yell at you.

If you mouse over or target a rare mob, SilverDragon will notice it.

This is the also how SilverDragon learns about new rares in the wild. After you first mouse over or target one, it'll remember it, and start watching for it in the cache in the future.

If you have enemy nameplates turned on, SilverDragon will keep an eye on them to look for the names of known rares. This is the least exact method, because nameplates don't expose the underlying mob's id, so we have to rely on a plain name comparison.

Addons that modify nameplates may interfere with this.

SilverDragon can also create a macro to target any rares that are known in the current zone. You can stick this on your actionbars as a button to spam while chasing after a rare. This is sort of a last resort.

How will I know when a rare is seen?

When a rare appears, SilverDragon will pop up a frame that you can click on to target it.

Warning: If you're in combat, secure action restrictions mean that it won't show up until combat finishes.

You can choose from assorted sounds to play when a rare is seen. The sound can loop for a while, to make sure you don't miss it.

There's special settings for rares that drop mounts and world boss rares which you might want to call up a group for. If you're sitting mostly-AFK on a Time-Lost Proto Drake spawn, you probably want the sound that plays to be utterly ridiculous and go on for a good long while, to make sure you don't miss that sucker.

A notice can be sent to a number of places:

  • your scrolling combat text
  • your chat frame
  • a channel in your chat frame (announcing it to your party, for instance)
  • a popup window
  • etc

Other useful things?

Custom mobs

In SilverDragon's options you'll find a "Mobs" section. In the "Always" section, you can add any mob you want to be scanned for. All you need to know is the mob id.

So, let's say you wanted to keep an eye out for Lil Timmy in Stormwind, to buy the kitten he sells. You would...

  1. Go to his wowhead page.
  2. Grab his id from the URL. It's 8666.
  3. Enter 8666 into the "add" field, and click "okay".
  4. Play with your new kitten.

Ignoring mobs

If there's some mob you don't want to hear about for whatever reason, just go to the "Ignore" section of the options. Again, enter the mob's id into the "add" box, then click okay. Bam! You will never again be told that Vern is up.

(Actually, Vern is ignored by default. But you get the idea.)

SilverDragon will talk to itself. It can communicate with other copies of itself run by people in your party / guild, and tell you when they see a rare mob. (If there's a group of you camping all the Time-Lost Proto Drake spawns, say...)

You can turn this off completely, if you want to be private about it.

Some rares are part of an achievement. When you mouse over a rare mob, SilverDragon will add to the tooltip whether you've already killed it, so you know whether you need to rush for it.

SilverDragon includes a Broker plugin. It'll attach itself to your minimap, or a Broker container you have installed, and show you a list of the mobs it knows about in the current zone.

Other addons you may find useful

  • ServerRestartSound: plays a sound when the server's about to restart. If you're AFK-camping for a rare spawn, you probably want to know about this.
  • HandyNotes: integrates with SilverDragon to show icons on zone maps where a rare has been seen.
  • ButtonBin: a broker display. SilverDragon's minimap icon will show up on it (or any other addon like it) instead of cluttering up your minimap, if you have it installed.

Thank you for the 4.0.1 update! This is one of my favorite and most used addons.

Anyone know if this is still being maintained? I've been getting an occasional error when SD targets a rare ("Interface\\FrameXML\\UIParent.lua:2567: attempt to compare nil with number"), somtimes the error kicks in as soon as the SD pop-up appears, sometimes it kicks in when I attack the rare and other times it kicks in when I loot the rare. Doesn't happen with every rare either, though the error seems to alwasy happen with certain rares.

Not long ago, when the pop-up appeared, it could be dragged. Now it can't. Soooo... turns out on one alt the frame position is just too far to the right - and the "X" to close it is not click-able. Soooooo - gotta LOG OFF & ON to clear it! :-(
  • #536
Any way to move the SilverDragon frame?
  • #510
Forgive my noobness, I don't understand why there can't be an option to go off even if the rare has been seen before with out having to clear the cache.
  • #517
From what I can gather, the way these addons work is, they scan the cache file and wait until the name of a rare appears. Once it does, it tells you what rare it is, and gives you the pop-up so you can target it. After that, since you've already seen the creature ingame, its name won't appear in the cache file again - it only adds the line once.
  • #504
Just a quick question, would it be possible, or is it possible, to config silverdragon to point out WHERE the rares are; not just showing that your near them?
  • #477
Anyone got an idea how to actually clear the mob cache?
I deleted the Cache sub-directory in my WoW folder, and all mobs I've seen/cached still are cached, and don't auto-pop like they supposedly should.
I have gotten the v2.3.5 from, but there was no info there, either.
Royal pain right now, this is.

The cache you need to clear for SilverDragon and NPCScan in Vista/Win7 can be found in the following directoy:

(make sure you have 'show hidden files and folders' enabled as well)

This addon is *dead* stone cold dead. Sorry. I wish someone who knew lua could fix the problems. The biggest problem right now is that this addon got a "memory" leak. The second you spot something this addon goes nuts and grows insanely in size until you close WoW.
  • #444
nice addon, i've changed the options to be defaults for all toons, however, those options i set are not staying, ie; i set it to send a msg to /y that a rare's been spotted, but on logging to another char, it won't load my defaults. it goes back to no settings enabled, and i have to manually configure them all over again, INCL on toons i've already done this for. any ideas? any fixes planned by anyone for this?
  • #441
Husband and I are currently having an issue where it's not actually spotting the rares unless we mouse over them. Until the past week, maybe two, it has done a good job of popping up the little box (although the click to target didn't work, and still doesn't even if I'm standing on top of the rare) to let me know even if I flew over one so I could go back and get it. Any ideas on what's going on? I love this add-on! I tried NPCscan, but it doesn't work very well in old world.
  • #431
As already mentioned this addon is very buggy right now and cause conflicts with other addons as well as the blizzard interface. Unless someone can "fix" the problems, which seems to be a spam of "compare a number to nil", its game over for this bugger.
  • #413
Unfortunately, it looks like my trusty old SD is falling by the wayside. In case it continues to stagnate, a nice alternative is available. NPCScan has the same functionality as SD, with more recent updates and additional features. There's also a plugin for it (NPCScan Overlay) that adds colored overlays to the world map and minimap, showing the actual paths of rare mobs, instead of just spawn points.
