About WhereIs

The addon (WhereIs) is empty of information. If you want to pre-load all the info you will need to install and run the WhereIs_Update addon at least once. You have to run the update once for each faction because, if you don't play Horde, you don't have the useless information taking up memory. To run the update, type /wi update.

It would seem that has problems notifying authors about new comments. If you have a question or issue that needs my attention please use the curseforge ticketing system or send me a PM.

Where Is....?

This is the addon to answer that question. Where is that Entrance, Transport, Portal, Quartermaster, Vendor, Anvil, Forge, Food & Drink and this list goes on.

Simply select what you want from the menu and WhereIs will tell you where to go. If you have TomTom or Carbonite installed, then you can get an arrow pointing the way.

Thanks to

Esamynn for Astrolabe.

New Features

Some NPCs change locations. WhereIs is now able to identify those NPCs and record their different locations when you interact with them. If you want to find a travelling NPC, WhereIs will help you track them down. If you prefer, you can filter out Travelling NPCs.

How does it work?

WhereIs will try to keep track of an NPC's current location and will point to that location when you want to go back. If the NPC is not there when you arrive, you can Ctrl+left click the addon icon and the next nearest location will be shown. "Rinse & repeat" until you gone through all the known locations or find the NPC.

It is now possible to improve your status with individual NPCs. These NPCs will be listed in a new menu option. (Some are Travelling NPCs.)

MoP has increased the range of trade skill tools you can use. Tools now have a seperate sub-menu option for each trade skill.

Other Features

  • Filter Zone Level

High level mobs have a Crushing Blow ability. If you want to avoid those zone, select this option.

  • Filter Limited Quantities.

You're looking to buy an item, but the vendor has run out - now what? WhereIs will now track "out of stock" items. This means you can use the addon to search for an alternative vendor.

  • Filter Calendar Events.

Don't go pointing to an NPC that's not around at the moment.

  • Trade Skills

Trade Skills have their own menu options, if you don't have that trade skill, the option will be hidden. (The picture has them turned on so you can see them.) The Trade Skills menu options will allow you to find the closest vendor for a particular item. There is a range of items tracked for each trade skill, these include items like tools, seeds and other items introduced in MoP.

  • Food & Drink.

Now you can automatically search for food or drink suitable for your toon level. Did you know there are vendors in Daralan that sell food and drink for level 85 toons?

  • Trainer

Will only displays the trainers you need.

  • Entrance.

Where is the entrance to that dungeon/raid - here's your answer!

  • Special Vendors.

Want to buy a pet, mount, or some alcohol? Now you can select the item you want and find the nearest vendor.

As far as possible the addon will update it's self as you play and this version has enhanced info sharing. So when you find something new, it will share that with other guild members and friends. You can turn this option off.

Updated for the latest patch. Tweaks to the way Travelling Vendors are handled. WhereIs_Update will contain new information on these NPCs

I am consistently getting the message '[Where Is] The WhereIs Update addon is out of date, it needs updating.' Whenever I try to run the utility. I have WhereIs v41 and WhereIsUpdate 27. I am not running Curse Client, as Curse Gaming has not seen fit to make a Linux version yet.

My apologies for the slow reply. I seemed to have missed the email notification of your post.

I've just checked with my Shaman, and the Stable Master appears. (I thought I changed it).  So if it's missing from your version there would seem to be an issue.

Firstly, please check you have the latest version of WhereIs (currently v0.40).

If you have the latest version and Stable Master is still missing, then that would suggest your database is corrupt. Try the command /wi check. WhereIs will try to fix any errors it finds, but it's not perfect.

if the Above command does not work, then download and install the latest version of WhereIs_Update then use the command /wi update reset.

Please let me know how it goes. Now I've found your message, I shall make  a point to check for your reply.

P.S. I'll send you a PM just in case you've given up looking for my reply.

We were both using v.40 but your other advice worked!

For me, /wi check fixed it up.

For my galpal, /wi check did nothing but  /wi update reset worked.

The weird part is that on both computers I had tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling WhereIs and Whereis_Update multiple times.  Doesn't it do the integrity check when you first run the updater?

Either way, thanks for replying and, most of all, for supplying the fix!

From what you have said so far, I agree that it seems the Curse Client has caused you some issues. Assuming it is the Curse software, and that is a big assumption, it's not going to be an easy one to solve.

So far, you're the only person I know to have a problem using the Curse Client to un-install.  And solving this problem is a numbers game: Look at what lots of peeps did and hope the common activities lead to a solution.

So if anyone else is having problems please let me know.

I uninstalled from the Curse Client which has the check box for deleting the variables file.  I assumed that was everything but I guess not!

  • #32

Thanks for getting back to me.

When you un-installed the addon, did you also remove the WhereIs files in the WTF folder?  When you have corruption, it's normally in those files, so just removing the addon from the Interface folder won't work.

The update utility will perform an integrity check, but it's not perfect. Now the addon is being used properly, all the issues I didn't think of are coming out to haunt me. ;) I hope to make improvements to reduce these issues.

Thanks for letting me know all's well.

Is it possible to get Stable Masters active for all classes?  Only my two hunters show them on the menu but they're needed for Pet Battle heals for all classes.

Same with my girlfriend's computer so I assume it's a "feature" in the addon itself.

Sadly this app is no longer working for me.  When i click on the icon it only shows me food and drink, and neither of those work. I have tried uninstalling, and starting from scratch, but it still wont work.. I have tried running the update twice

Edit:: it is now showing all the items in the drop down list, but none of them react in chat and the waypoint arrow is not responding either. Apart from the fact that update seems to run ok, the add has become totally none responsive

Sorry for the delay in replying - RL getting in the way.

Perhaps I'm being thick, but I'm not sure I understand.

it is now showing all the items in the drop down list

I'm assuming by "drop down list" you mean the menu that's displayed when you click on the WhereIs golden globe icon.  But do you mean game items like Purified Draenic Water or do you mean any of the options displayed on the menu?

but none of them react in chat

This has me completely confused. You can only "react" with special links displayed in the chat window and the only time WhereIs displays any kind of link is when it's found a  food or drink vendor. (It lists links for appropriate food or drink the vendor sells)

and the waypoint arrow is not responding either.

The action of the waypoint arrow is completely controlled by TomTom or Carbonite and not WhereIs. WhereIs "sends a message" to TomTom (or Carbonite).  If this message is corrupt then TomTom may do something "stupid", like point to the wrong location. But if the arrow isn't changing as you move about in the game, that's not likely to be a problem caused by WhereIs.

Also, depending on your settings in TomTom; if the arrow is pointing to a different waypoint, it may continue to point to that waypoint until you clear it.  But if you look at your map you will see the waypoint received from WhereIs.

Assuming you have the latest version for all your current addons (if not do it now Tongue out) then read on.

By default WoW does not display Addon errors. To change this do the following:

    1. Login as normal and enter the game world with any toon.
    2. Bring up the game menu (by default pressing the <Escape> key will work) and select "Interface".
    3. Choose the "Help" option at the bottom of the list displayed on the left side of the Interface window.
    4. You should see the option "Display Lua Errors" - select it,
    5. then click ok.

Once the option "Display Lua Errors" is selected, go to the Addons screen. The button is on the Toons selection screen - bottom left corner. Disable all addons except WhereIs. Then enter the game world with any toon.

Are any errors displayed? If so, you can use <ctrl>+<a> and then <ctrl>+<c> to copy the text. (and <ctrl>+<p> will allow you to paste into your reply)

If there are no error messages, what text is being displayed by WhereIs in your chat window? "Menu construction complete" is the one I'm hoping for.

If you've done the above and everything seems fine so far, the next test is to see if WhereIs will locate something (NPC, location, game item). So try and locate the nearest Banker. You should see a message in your chat window telling you who it is and their location. (I'm assuming that you have run the update utility and not deleted anything since you posted your message)

if you are able to locate the Banker, re-enable TomTom and try again.

If you're not able to locate a Banker, then I suggest the following:

    1. Exit the game completely.
    2. Search for all files and folders called WhereIs. There will be several in your WoW Interface and WTF subfolders.  I would recommend using the search option found in Windows File Explorer; Macs have a similar option, but I don't know what it's called.
    3. Reinstall WhereIs and WhereIs_Update
    4. Restart the game, login and enter the game world

I'm assuming you are following all my suggestions in the order I've listed them here. Which means you have already selected the "Display Lua Errors" option and disabled all other addons except WhereIs, WhereIs_Update and TomTom.

Again, any errors displayed? Do you see the "Menu construction complete"? You should see a prompt telling you to run the WhereIs Update utility. If you see this message, run the update.

Once the update has finished, look for that Banker. Does that work? Is the TomTom waypoint arrow working ok?

If you've got this far and everything seems to be working as it should (with just WhereIs and TomTom enabled). This would suggest that something else is causing WhereIs/TomTom to act the way it is.

When replying it would be extremely helpful if you can quote any messages displayed. In order to solve the problems you're having, I have to be anal about accuracy. When dealing with computers you can't be vague - sorry.  I have to be sure I understand because I'm rubbish at guessing.

Let me know how it goes.

Is it just me, or is Gryphon Master not on the list anywhere?  I see the Flying Trainer, and the Transport options, but no Gryphon anywhere.  Other than that I think everything works great and is there.

  • #25

Gryphon Masters provide transport - a taxi service. So try the menu option Transport-Taxi. :)

  • #26

Thanks!  It's listed as Taxi, which totally confused me.

I think there is a bug for this addon: when cancel the option"show floating icon" it shows a error:
