About WoWVid

WoWVid

WoWVid (WoW Video) allows the user to watch movies inside WoW while doing dailies or grinding.
(originally by Norpse)

How does it work

WoWVid creates a texture that when properly configured, allows media playing in the background to project inside WoW.
It is a pure lua addon, no executables.
You will however need an external player of your choice that is capable of playing video in Overlay mode.
Most popular media players (and several freeware ones) support this mode of operation.

Setup

  1. Start World of Warcraft.
  2. Once in the game press Esc to bring up the Game Menu.
  3. Select Video -> Graphics -> Display Settings -> "Windowed(FullScreen)"

Example configurations for 2 popular media players: (thanks to Garual for the write-up)

  1. start VLC
  2. click Tools
  3. Preferences
  4. go under Video
  5. make sure Accelerated video output is on
  6. for Output select DirectX(DirectDraw)
  7. start playback
  8. start WoW
  9. type /wv config and set WoWVid to R:0 G:0 B:1
  10. place WoWVid window over the VLC one.
  1. start KMPlayer
  2. press F2
  3. click on Video Processing
  4. select tab Renderer
  5. for Renderer choose Overlay mixer
  6. start playback
  7. start WoW
  8. set WoWVid to R:15 G:0 B:15
  9. place WoWVid window over the KMPlayer one

I wonder if you could explain to me how to set up wowvid to work with winamp? :)

While I could not get this to work, I have been looking for an addon that will allow me to play videos inside WoW without having to put WoW in windowed mode. For watching movies inside games I have been using WoW in Windowed mode maximized to full. I then use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema which comes by default in the Full K-Lite codec pack.

I have it set up as follows:

On top while playing video selected (Right clck video -> View -> On top)

    Remember last Window position ticked
Remember file position ticked (This lets you close the player, and open the file later and it remembers where you were!)
This is found under View -> Options -> Player. In the bottom right corner.
You also need to turn off Auto-zoom which is found in the Playback section of the options.

Play next in folder selected (So for TV series it just plays the next episode with no user interaction)

Right click the video and then After Playback -> Every Time -> Play Next in folder.

the main feature of the media player however is that you can press '1' on the keyboard (The number row at the top, for some reason it does not work with the number pad) and it turns into a borderless resizable video window. Press '2' to make a time slider appear. Press '3' to go back to normal!

Has been working well for me, and also while you are waiting for your BG or RDF to pop you can double click the video and go fullscreen!

    EDIT:
Thought I would add a few more helpful bits.
To change volume just click the video and then scroll up or down.
The resizing is done by the edges of the window as normal.
as with any media player, you an click it once and press spacebar to pause/unpause when you go AFK

I just want to say thank you for providing an alternative, since I did download this addon and gave it a try... or five of getting it to actually work, but could not. And so far, looks like your idea works best! 8D No more boredom while I fish! YAY!

This used to work great around the time of AQ opening, and was simple to use. This needs updating and needs to be brought back.

    Not working

So I understand well that it is simply projector? This VLC must be exactly the black square ? ^ ^

CZE: Takže chápu dobře, že je to prostě jen projector ? To VLC musí být přesně za tím černým čtvercem ? ^^

    yes, you understand well

Does still work with MoP !
    +1 for very creative thinking!
PS: Leftclicking the minimap-button should show/hide the wowvid frame while a rightclick opens options AND (un)locks the frame. This would be even more awesome!

Maybe you can put the following in the Description to get some extra credit for this AddOn:

How to watch YouTube Videos ingame:
    1. Copy the URL, of the Video you want to watch.
    2. Open VLC
    3. Click Media
    4. Go under Open Network Stream (Press Crtl + N)
    5. Insert the URL

Don't know if this will work with KMPlayer, maybe someone could test it.
