Warcraft Movie Penned by Saving Private Ryan Screenwriter

In an interview with Sam Raimi recently, MTV received a reveal no one had heard to this point. It looks like the upcoming Warcraft movie will be written by Robert Rodat, screenwriter for Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot.

Raimi also goes on to state that there's a good chance familiar lands, and maybe even some familiar characters will be used in the movie, but their goal is to create a unique experience. What that means is hard to say, but it's likely that -- if characters like Arthas, Jaina, etc. appear in the film -- that the story won't be focused on them.

The question then is, will it focus on characters from current Warcraft lore at all? Or will we see another entry into the forms of media that inject characters into the game?

If anyone remembers back to TBC beta, there used to be a quest called "Saving Private Imarion," so it's no surprise Rodat has been chosen for the movie. He obviously has more than one fan at Blizzard Entertainment.

You can hear a snippet from the conversation over on the MTV blog.

I just hope enough people on the cast and crew are fans of Warcraft like the LoTR folks were.  Thet stayed true to the story and made it work in the movie format.  I hope the same happens here.

IDK but come saving private ryan was a awesome movie so the warcraft movie will be (this is a speculation) a great movie

p.s i think the entire movie will be in CGI

So how can the writer redirect from saving private ryan to warcraft movie...

It won't focus on their actions but the effects their actions have. So say The lich king rocks up, kills a **** load of people with his army of the dead, then ***** off we won't actually see where he goes but they will probably focus on a main less significant character dredging through the aftermath.

    @JJWasyl

Thats only if they decided to actually have the movie in the same timeline as WoW. If I recall when the movie was announce they wanted it between WC3 and WoW, no danger there in my opinion.

The creators considered showing these characters as a dangerous action which might narrow their field of action for the upcoming expantions

wait a minute... The movie is apparently focusing on the Lich King but might not feature Arthas or Jaina (or even Uther for that matter). . .

    Am I missing something here?

    In reference to Keuric's comment...

I agree with your arguments, although I believe that video games are a much more difficult issue for movie makers, especially those with a very developed history and no actual ending. So the makers of this movie will have to somehow melt it into the lore to keep its sense (Exactly what the DOOM cast was not able to accomplish).

But hopefully, Blizzard is gathering an experienced staff, which of course may make a real box office hit or nothing more than another mediocre Game-movie conversion (Like Hitman).

Still, I am convinced that all addicted players will find it Uber c00l and buy the DVD as soon as it comes out.

.. on a completely unrelated note.

Sam Raimi is directing a fantasy movie. I have a lot of faith in Sam. For their times, Spider Man movies 1 and 2 were fantastic, possibly the best comic book movies made until The Dark Knight (yes, this is all arguable). His Evil Dead trilogy continues to make many top movie lists.

Spider Man 3 happened. I consider it a bad movie with good ideas.

In contrast, Saving Private Ryan was great, but the Patriot was pretty damned bad. Please consult any historical tome about the Revolutionary War to know why.

Anyone saying Doom 3 may be the best game ever made should really take a good, long look in the mirror. And speak again when they're able to buy cigarettes legally or need to shave at least twice a week.

Do video games have awful historical references when made into movies? Two words: Mario Brothers.

After Batman & Robin, one could have started pounding the nails into the brief foray into comic books that the film industry took as well. But look at it now. Unexpectedly, good film makers like Bryan Singer and Sam Raimi expanded them from niche markets (X-Men had a budget of $75 million and was a massive gamble) to blockbusters (The Dark Knight made a billion dollars).

I fully believe that you can make a great movie from a video game.

Just not if that video game sucks.

I'm lookin' at you, Double Dragon.

no doubt this is gona be a hit or TOTAL-miss lol - every movie ever made from a game has had issues, hell look a doom3 - that may be the best game ever made, and its setup like a movie already - but did the movie DOOM have anything to do with it? nope - it we backwards, and added crap - look at tron, good movie, made sense based on its game version. but then look at bailar bailar (a spanish movie bout DDR) it had the game, but didnt focus on it - insted its based on the main charectures.

so i figure its gona be WoW REALTED, but it is NOT gona be warcraft - its gona be RELATED TO WOW lol - sad as it may seem, this is destined by our messed up society so movies please every1 - not just he hardcore gamers who see it T_T
