Teaser Page Update #5: Still Day 4

And so it continues

Day 4 of Blizzard Entertainments teaser build up to a mystery announcement at the WWIs has started and a new splash image has gone up, just as we thought it would. Today’s image opens the gap in the ice some more, revealing yet more steam and what appears to be two eyes, starring through the ice. As well as this, a fourth rune has been added, just like everyone thought it would.

New blizzard game?Day 2 Ice 2blizzard teaser 3ice number four

Let’s start with the new rune. People have already started to link this too an existing Blizzard IP. Yesterday I speculated that maybe, the next rune would link to Blizzard’s Warcraft RTS franchise, as they have counted World of Warcraft and Warcraft separately on other occasions. Today, a link has been made between the new rune and Warcraft III - the rune has been likened to the Arcane Sanctum from Warcraft 3. Much like they did prior to the announcement of StarCraft 2, Blizzard seems to be running through their existing IPs before revealing what the new game is.

It seems to be pretty certain that the two white objects on the other side of the gap are eyes. The question is, whose eyes are they? Most people think that they are too far apart to belong to the Lich King Arthas. Some believe that they could belong to a Protoss Dark Templar from the StarCraft tiles whilst others are pinning their hopes on one of the characters from the Diablo franchise – Lilith or Diablo. One thing is certain – none of us will know who or what the eyes belong to until Blizzard announce the new game.

And it is confirmed: Blizzard ARE announcing a brand new game at the World Wide Invitationals this Saturday/Sunday. Curse will be there all weekend to keep you apprised of exactly what is going on, so keep an eye out on Curse.com.

The next part of the ever-mysterious puzzle is the 4th image that has been hidden away in the CSS file, courtesy of Blizzard. The last 3 used the words Tundra, Cavern and Icy, all of which were linked to World of Warcraft and Diablo 2. This next image, which confirms that there are six pieces to the puzzle, has been labelled “cold” and once again it can be linked to World of Warcraft and Diablo 2 – WotLK and Act 5 respectively.

Penguin?

All we know is that over the course of the next 48 hours, the debate over what title this could be is going to get ever more heated. It is now confirmed that the announcement has nothing to do with existing titles -- World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King or StarCraft 2 -- and is about an entirely new game. Sadly, we still don’t know whether this is based on an existing IP or a brand new IP.

So with the revelation that there is a new game, what do you guys think it will be? Will it be the successor to the hit RPG Diablo 2? Could we see the renewal of StarCraft: Ghost? Is there a chance the Warcraft 4 is on the doorstep? Could we be seeing an MMO based on the StarCraft or Diablo franchises? Or perhaps this is simply a new World of Warcraft expansion? Let’s hear what you guys have to say!

Keep an eye on Curse as if there are any major revelations, will update you as and when they happen!

The odds of Blizzard making another MMO while World of Warcraft is still going strong are slim to none, splitting their playerbase among MMOs is stupid and pointless. Most likely it will be a Diablo 3 or a brand new game, as Warcraft lore is being continued in World of Warcraft.

  • Thu, Jun 26 2008 9:11 AM ()

I don't think it would be stupid to run another MMO alongside WoW.

As it currently goes there are numerous MMO's comming up and Blizzard will lose player base in anyways because of change. People seek change sometimes and that is the reason behind Blizzard announcing a new game imo. We all know the lore ended in War3 with what will be introduced in wotlk and a few patches later. And what then?

This new announcement I think will give Blizzard the needed breathing space to focus on a) either a new concept , b) additional lore for WoW, which i think has run its course. WoW is the golden chicken for Blizzard and it won't fade away but being too reliant on one such franchise is failure waiting to happen.

Hence the merger with Activision. I wont be surprised if Blizzard does announce a new MMO.

Lets hope its D3...in the making atleast :P

(Since everything is speculation no one can or will be correct, so take comments with a grain of salt)

I agree with mattbird, the warcraft story is being told through world of warcraft now, i highly doubt they would make a new game based off of it, my money is on a new diablo game. Most of blizzards games are based off multiplayer, and im guesing that want to bring back those people who are only intersted in a single player gameplay.

Call them stupid then heh. cause they are already making another MMO, thats been said many times already. Its just a matter of then it gets announced.

As unlikely as it may be, im hoping for a starcraft MMO

Diablo 3 baby! It's on my wishlist and I'm waiting for it So darn long!!!!!! And if it will be a MMO like hell yeah I'm gonna play it. I love Diablo xD

  • Thu, Jun 26 2008 9:11 AM ()

Surprisingly, I don't think a StarCraft MMO is an unlikely idea. In fact, I think it may be the most logical step for Blizzard to take with their next MMO. What I do think is that the project is so far away that announcing it now would be counter productive. When they were developing WoW, they didn't confirm it until they had an engine and (going by the job advertisements) the new MMOs engine isn't vaguely complete yet. Another reason why I think that a StarCraft MMO is the most likely option is because (1) the market is saturated with fantasy titles (2) Stagate Worlds, Start Trek Online, Earthrise, Fallen Earth and a multitude of other sci-fi titles are on their way, indicating that the sci-fi genre is pretty much where the future lies for big MMO releases (3) StarCraft 2 can be used to make the lore MMO friendly, much like they did with Warcraft 3.

If it's NOT diablo I will be highly disappointed. Blizzard knows we all want to fight diablo again, We all LOVED that game dearly, it was our lives before WoW, and to some of us it still is.

    Wtb diablo 3

Also adding to my previous post, the aforementioned "Totally new game" is not in fact stated as such. The blizz spokesman said "So you want me to announce the game before our announcement?" And that does not translate to "So you want me to announce the TOTALLY NEW NON WOTLK OR SC2 game before our announcement?"

This could be a poorly worded response by a new spokesman, or if he said anything other then "Game" it would have defiantly given away the surprise, leading to "oh, then it's wotlk or sc2 betas". So i think the use of "Game" is a precautionary measure to keep us guessing.

Still, with a starcraft game already in production, wouldn't it be more logical to wait until the game is at least finished until they start making a sequel/side story game? And i would have a tough choice over playing a starcraft MMO or WoW, leveling 2 characters on 2 games and raiding? I dunno which i would pick.

  • Thu, Jun 26 2008 9:11 AM ()

Come on, how great would Starcraft Online be if they made it like DAoC with the three races? It's totally plausible and the market is ripe for it. An RvR type sci-fi MMO made in the Starcraft universe? As for Starcraft 2 it would be a lot like the games that get released along side movies except that in this case the movie would be the MMO. Think of Starcraft2 as an advertisement to drum up interest in the Starcraft MMO (where the real money is).

I can totally see it (and I hope it's what's happening).

  • Thu, Jun 26 2008 9:11 AM ()

Either way SC / D3 MMO would both be great successes because of the knowledge gained by Blizzard in WoW. And seeing that they have the resources and player base I cant see them going wrong.

Even if they lose players in WoW they are only moving to another one of their franchises, so how is that bad? :)

  • Thu, Jun 26 2008 9:11 AM ()

I disagree with the idea of it being pointless to start up a new MMO. Dozens of new MMOs pop up every year, and WoW is still going strong while these MMOs thrive. The player base isn't "splitting", it's just assimilating new games. Hardcore gamers who will continue to pay for one MMO while still testing the waters on a new one are the bread and butter for publishers in this genre. When Blizzard announces this new "Next-Gen MMO", they won't lose (many) players from WoW, but they stand a chance of gaining even more business from people who trust the company. Would you rather spend your OTHER $15/month on Age of Connan, Warhammer Online, or Star Trek Online, all new players in the MMO genre, or go with the company that got it "right" and set the exceptionally high standard on MMOs?

Also, I believe the new MMO will be a Starcraft MMO. The demand has been there since WoW came around, Sci-Fi MMOs are taking off, and with Blizz's constant cue-taking from Warhammer (Warhammer for Warcraft, 40k for Starcraft), and since Games Workshop has already stated their intentions to produce a 40k MMO if Warhammer Online takes off, I think Blizzard would be smart in getting "World of Starcraft" out there first.

However, I sincerely hope the new game is Diablo 3. With all the focus on cold, and the image hidden in the CSS file (speculation has already been made on the final image being Diablo or some other demon hunched over in a coat for warmth. You can see a tip of red coming out from under the hood, suggesting a horn or ear), I'm thinking it's highly possible the new game is Diablo 3, with the theme/subtitle/tag line of "Hell Freezes Over"

That's my guess, anyway. Like jwvolschenk said, it's all speculation until this weekend.

  • Thu, Jun 26 2008 9:11 AM ()

I'm not too sure whether you are doing it (and I shall assume that you aren't) but a lot of people seem to be under the allusion that two MMOs from Blizzard would be a bad thing for them. I don't think that this is the case at all - NCSoft, Turbine, EA Mythic, Funcom; all companies that are running multiple MMO titles.

Blizzard may well release another MMO to take over as their flagship title - that is more than likely. Blizzard could easily run two MMOs concurrently. Firstly, making a StarCraft MMO would benefit Blizzard because (1) It is a sci-fi franchise, meaning that it would not step on WoWs toes in terms of background (2) It again presents a new genre and thus, a new market gap for Blizzard meaning that there is far more potential for them to draw in new customers than move customers from WoW to a StarCraft MMO (3) StarCraft is one of the best selling PC Game franchises of all time, meaning that it would not take massive marketing funds to get it in the public eye. Those are only a few reasons but they are very strong reasons.

Sadly, I don't think they will announce the MMO at this moment in time. They may well announce it next year, but at the moment, the lime light is very much on WoW and hints at a new MMO based on an arguably more successful RTS franchise (especially with SC2 not even released) would instil doubt in the WoW fan base.

  • Thu, Jun 26 2008 9:11 AM ()

I assure you, the announcement is a new game ;-) What that new game is, I don't know but I have it on pretty good authority (multiple authorities in fact) that it is a new game ;-)

  • Thu, Jun 26 2008 9:11 AM ()

You can have a number of products on the market, If there are clear differentiation in each product. They can improve on their market share by providing a game that supports areas of MMO market which is not being captured by WoW.

I look forward to the new game and hope it is new MMO.

Has anyone noticed two parallel ice shards in the splash screen that looks like eyes? In addition I also saw a dark silhouette in the center that looked like a dragon's head. In addition if you looked there is an upside down triangle looking part that looks like it could be a mouth. I have no idea what this all could mean but it probably means something. The eyes are like right angled Triangles that are on the same line and
the mouth is lower down /\
looks kinda like this ----> -
