Curse Client 3.0 Release

I just wanted to take out a few moments and let everyone know that friday we released the 3.0 client to our entire userbase. It's been a long time coming, but I feel it fixes the majority of issues people have raised.

Some of the highlights:

Redesigned User Interface
More accurate addon identification
Revaluated Defaults settings
More features (including whether or not to use embedded libraries)
Numerous bug fixes and stability improvements

Mac Client 3.0 Beta Release!

We managed to get you a mac client beta out on Friday as well! This was a personal victory for me as I'm now actively working on the code for the mac client. In addition to the above changes we are happy to announce that updates are now done through Sparkle (same update mechanism used by Adium, Textmate and many other mac apps).

We are still in beta here as wxWidgets' implementations can drastically differ on mac vs pc, as a result we're working hard to iron out issues, and will be putting out updates all this week until we're at a more stable point.

Known Issues

Upload mistakes

Over the last week we've had a few authors mistakenly upload either the wrong file or files with invalid layouts that have caused the client's fingerprinting to mistake people's folders for the wrong addon.

Two known examples of this are Ace3 and Auctioneer getting flagged as Tournament Realm Spy and epgp. We've fixed it server side however the client won't just 'forget'. You'll need to remove the false match and in some cases reinstall the new correct match.

Mac Issues

A crash that can happen on load in the sort routine
A soft crash where the client stops displaying data and buttons fail to do anything
Menu options being decidedly 'unmacish'

Curse Client Update - September 3rd

Today we're releasing the latest build of the Curse Client - the small utility that manages your game addons and submits data to WOWDB and WARDB. With the Curse Client installed, your game addons will be kept up-to-date, as they are delivered directly from authors hosting their projects at CurseForge!

This latest version is the most polished yet, correcting all known issues that the community has reported and adding filters to the Find an Addon tool.

New Curse Client Available to Test

A new version of our Curse Client is available to testing. The next version of our client is a significant upgrade. The new version will have an all-new GUI that is much more intuitive than before. It also includes many new features. The first is an addon search within the client to assist you in quickly finding new addons. The second is a new function to share your interface with other people. This feature will tie in closely with the website, much like the screenshot tool. The rest of the new features will be disclosed as we come closer to launch.

We’ve also gone back and looked at the code to fix several bugs. A lot of issues that we were never previously able to reproduce have been identified and eliminated. Addon identification has also been improved. If you manually install addons, the client will detect them and attempt to match them against known addons. If there are many options, the client will then prompt you to pick the correct match. Lastly, it should be much more apparent when an addon needs updating.

The first test version has all the features except the addon management and news disabled. However, both are fully functional and can be used going forward. We will be enabling the screenshot and other features in the next couple of weeks. Whenever a new version is released, it will automatically update.

For those of you who want to test it out, you can download it with the link below. As with any beta software, it may be unstable. Please report any issues with the Report a Bug link at the top of the client.

Note: It will overwrite your old client. Even if you choose to install it elsewhere, you will not be able to use the old client to update addons. If you wish to revert to the old client, you will need to reinstall it.

Known issues/upcoming changes

• Layouts are not final, and will change

• There will be a more visual indication when addons needs to be updated

• The client will detect addons in your directory, and attempt to find a match. We are tweaking the match algorithm, but the results should be very good. Let us know if you find something funny with the results

Curse Client Update

Today we pushed live a new version of the Curse Client that addresses many of the issues users have reported, including a complete rewrite of the backend engine of the client to make it more efficient. We feel this is the most stable, reliable release of the client to-date, and hopefully you will too after giving it a try.

The first time you run the client, it will automatically update to the new version. If you haven't yet given the client a try, you can download it here.

A few of the major issues addressed with today's update:

Alert windows will no longer "spam" the screen -- taking up a large amount of real estate
AddOn Installation from the website was sometimes not detected; this is now fixed.
Logging into the client should be much more reliable now.

This is just the beginning of a huge week for Curse, so be sure to keep an eye out for further announcements today and tomorrow! Thank you everyone who has given the Curse Client a chance so far; we appreciate all the feedback on it and have many more changes and feature additions coming in the future based upon that feedback. We'll be able to talk more about that soon, so be on the lookout!

Curse Client Version Update

We've pushed live a major update for the Curse Client today with a number of bug fixes. It is highly suggested that all Curse Client users download the new update -- found here as soon as possible to make the most out of the client.

Here's a quick recap of what we've fixed with the update:

Addons now update properly.
Fixed "Curse Client should be running but isn't".
Fixed some of the permission errors from occuring.
Removing curse packages and then manually adding a package is now detected as an unmanaged addon ( before only packages never having been installed were detected )

As mentioned above, this is a very major bug-fix update that we highly suggest everyone download. To get the update, which will patch the client to version 0.13.5.2, click here.

If you've recently updated the client, be sure to check the "About" box and ensure the version listed is 0.13.5.2 -- 0.13.5 will not include the above-mentioned bug fixes.

New Version of the Curse Client

A new version of the Curse Client has been released. We're now up to version 0.12.5. It is one of those early adopter releases and mainly features small bug fixes. The client itself has the ability to auto update itself but I'm a firm believer of only releasing auto updates when we release major updates or when we release versions which fix critical issues.

I try to do staged releases so that if there is an issue it will not affect all our users and we can go back and resolve it and release another update rather rapidly without inconveniencing our existing user base. Then once it is well tested we can go ahead and release an auto update.

I have been debating whether this is really the best approach and if you have any input or have any issues with 0.12.5 feel free to comment and discuss in this news posting. The next version to go out as an auto update will be 0.13.0.

I'm posting this to see if users would like to have some input on how we do automatic updates instead of us discussing it internally at the office. I figure you guys are the ones ultimately most affected by this change anyways. Also would you like news updates of any future minor releases?

Features

Added a debug mode where the user can follow and analyze file operations.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a bug where the wrong path was being sent to BrowseDlg in CurseTrayIcon. Should now be possible to browse for custom paths again.
BrowseDlg::prompt should now allow for paths with '/' in them.
Error reports should no longer have characters with a value above 0x7f. Which means they are now UTF-8 compatible instead of 8-bit extended ASCII.

Version 0.12.4

Features

Added error reporting so that users can report any crashes directly to our central server.

Tweaks

If the user specifies a name and saves the screenshot to disk it now chooses that name as a filename by default.
Updated documentation to better reflect the current state of the client.
Increased default quality of JPEG images from 75 to 85.
Hardware stats will now only be sent once per week.
CPU description strings should now be more accurate for AMD K8L type processors.
CPU speed is now read from the system information instead of calculated.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a bug in snapshotPath that would affect very specific cases.
Fixed a bug in stringToInteger where a local variable override would overshadow something that it shouldn't have.
Fixed a crash involving DirectSound.
Fixed HTTP UserAgent string.

Version 0.12.3

Tweaks

Switched Config::getShowExternalPackages from true to false.
Theming now supports font styles as well.
MessageDlg now supports multiple messages in one dialog and should look a little bit better.
Added MessageLog class for making sure the user does not see the same message multiple times. Default is message can only be displayed once per 3 days.
Re-themed all dialogs.
PackageManager class now shows an error if a World of Warcraft package is requested but World of Warcraft isn't installed.
RSSManager and PackageManager now uses the new multiple messages in one MessageDlg. Should allow the user to close them easier.
RSSManager now splits off the game name from any news it receives, i.e everything before the first ':' of the title. This was done because the title would be too long otherwise. Will add game icon later.
Reduced time required to wait between logins in the wizard interface from 15 seconds to 5 seconds.
Wizard dialog sequence reduced from 8 steps to 3.
Fixed sqlite library which was debug but should be release.

Bug Fixes

HotkeyCtrl now correctly sets the hot key to 0 if none is selected.

WoWAce AddOns now available on Curse!

Great news for WoWAce fans. Thanks to a strong relationship with the folks at WoWAce, WoWAce AddOns are now available here on Curse!

This is doubly exciting for anyone who uses the Curse Client. You can now install all of your favorite WoWAce AddOns automatically with the Curse Client -- much the same as you can do with all other AddOns available on the website.

To get started, head over to the Ace AddOns file page. A list of the AddOns available is there, and clicking through on a name will bring you to a page where you can either download the latest version manually, or install it with the client.

If "Install Package" is chosen, your Curse Client will alert you each time a new version is available to download.

Curse Client 0.12.0 Released!

We've pushed a new version of our Curse Client live this morning, updating the version to 0.12.0. This version includes several brand-new features that everyone is sure to love, as well as bug fixes to outstanding issues reported by the Curse community.

AddOn Management is even easier than before with our new Package Manager; the "Install with Curse Client" button on download pages will be activated for this client version. By clicking this button while the client is installed, the AddOn will be installed directly to your World of Warcraft Interface directory - no manual downloading or unzipping required!
- The client will then track your AddOns installed through this method and pop-up messages each time an AddOn is updated. Clicking on this message box will take you directly to the file's page, where you can install the updated version.
The client provides news feeds directly from Curse.com. Windows will pop-up every time news is available, with filtering included so you only receive news based on the games you want to see!
The client now works properly with Windows Vista.
A number of bugs have been fixed.
