If you haven't played EVE Online yet, you might want to check it out. It's a single-server MMORPG run by Iceland developer CCP Games, and has had a consistently growing population for six years now.

The game recently broke 300,000 subscriptions worldwide, which when compared with the titan of MMOs may not seem like a whole lot, but when you think about the fact that they're all on one server it's quite a different story.

Head over for a free trial of EVE Online if you want to get in on the action! shelves March 12th with Eve Online: Apocrypha the latest expansion for the game.
This is the tenth expansion the game has undergone and will roll out with a big
list of new features. Take a look at the official post from Eve Online:

EVE Online: Apocrypha Features List
Gaming's biggest virtual world introduces unstable wormholes to explore,
Tech 3 cruisers, epic mission arcs and more in its tenth free expansion

Reykjavik, Iceland February, 26th, 2009 –
CCP, one of the world's
leading independent game developers, today announced the full features list for
EVE Online: Apocrypha, the tenth free expansion for
EVE Online subscribers,
which is due out on March 10th, coinciding with the availability of EVE in
retail outlets across North America, Europe and Pan Asia. Pilots will be able to
scan down and enter massive, chaotic wormholes that have opened into unexplored
solar systems. There, untold opportunities await behind the powerful defensive
curtain of an ancient, deadly race. When defeated and pillaged, their ships and
fortifications become the basis of the next level of technology back on the
"safer" side of the wormholes.

EVE's Senior Producer Torfi Frans Olafsson on Apocrypha: "Just like the human
body is said to regenerate itself every seven years, EVE Online continues to
grow and evolve in its sixth year of operation, with systems being added,
refined, refactored and polished with every expansion we make. As the player
base continually grows, we are able to increase the development team and bring
in more engineers, designers and artists for each expansion. This allows us to
deliver such a broad range of features catering to a variety of playstyles in a
volume that we can be proud of."

"It's both comforting and disturbing to come home after work, log in to EVE late
in the evening and find the same developers that spend their long day building
EVE, playing it and enjoying it deep into the night. We are a company that truly
sips its own champagne, likes it and strives to make it more tasty whenever we
can."

The improvements for Apocrypha include:

Explore and dominate more than 2,400 solar systems that exist on the other
side of unstable wormholes opening up throughout New Eden. New scanning
mechanics allow you to find and explore them in the first truly uncharted
 space in EVE.

Wormholes aren't the only thing to discover. Booster sites, archeological
digs, hacking sites, gas clouds and salvaging sites are some of the surprises
in store for those pilots skilled in scanning exploration.

The Sleepers, a new NPC race, protect an ancient technology within the
wormhole-space. They exhibit intelligence unlike any enemy yet found in new
Eden, requiring pilots to react to their deadly, shifting tactics.

Tech 3 strategic cruisers are the first ship class to arise from reverse
engineered technology gleaned from wormhole space fueling their production.
Their modular nature allows for a broad level of customization of both ship
 appearance and performance.

The New Player Experience has been rebuilt from the ground up with
improved tutorials and an easier introduction to possible "career" paths.
Rookie starship pilots will find it smoother than ever to become a force to be
reckoned with in the limitless world of New Eden.

The introduction of Epic Mission Arcs, huge branching mission sagas, are
designed to give new pilots a tour across many regions of space and bring them
out the other end, battle-hardened and knowledgeable about the EVE universe.

Hundreds of visual aspects in the game have been renovated, including
almost every effect in game. All new assets make up the massive wormhole
spaces, such as new NPC structures and gorgeous nebulas. Space just keeps
 looking better with age.

With further performance increases, optimizations and graphics upgrades,
we bid farewell to our Classic Graphics Client as players across all platforms
begin to enjoy the beauty of Premium Lite.

Mac owners rejoice! EVE will now be available to you in all of its Premium
 graphics glory.

Character attributes can now be rearranged in order to diversify or
specialize skill training with Attribute Remapping, perfect for a veteran who
needs to switch focus or a new player who's just discovered a different niche.

Players can now schedule automatic training of multiple skills with an
original skill queue planning interface designed for maximum efficiency.

A redesigned Ship Fitting Panel screen allows for more information when
kitting out your ship. The ability to export both ship fittings and overview
settings means that you can share your best configurations with your friends
or you can quickly re-fit a replacement ship to head back into battle.

The Audio Engine allows more flexibility for our sound designers, meaning
a complete revamp of a lot of audio effects including warping, jumpgates and
cloaking. Brand new sounds will also grace Apocrypha's new visual effects.

Our efforts to bring EVE closer to everyone's home continue with the
localized Russian client coming out of beta testing to full support.

Breaking with tradition, the collection of extras will also include 60 days
of free game time, a departure from the standard 30 days offered for most MMOGs,
allowing players to sign up and get started without paying any subscription fees
for the first 60 days of a new account. Alternatively, the included game time
may be used to extend an existing subscription or be split into two 30-day codes
known as "Pilot License Extensions" (PLEX) that can be sold to other players
through the in-game market for in-game currency.

Players redeeming the code to activate a new account will also receive these
special in-game items:

INSTANT WAR ACCESS: This certificate allows rapid access to organized
combat (through increased standings), helping new players get into the action
 quickly.

EXCLUSIVE CAREER GUIDE: Accessed via the website to allow for dynamic
updates, the guide includes insider tips and tricks.

VIP PASS: Use this card to invite a friend to try the game for 21 days.
When that friend becomes an EVE Online subscriber, you will get an additional
30 days of free game time.

EXCLUSIVE IN-GAME SHIP: An exclusive new ship, the Interbus Shuttle, will
allow players to fly in style with an increased capacity cargo hold to ferry
those extra crucial items at high speeds.

Availability

Delegates from the first democratically elected MMO player Council have declared themselves pleased with their initial face-to-face meeting with CCP, the developers of EVE Online.

There were over 25,000 EVE Online players which voted for the nine delegates who now get to represent them in the Council of Stellar Management (CSM). The nine councilors are now actively working with the EVE player base to identify significant matters and prioritize the most important ones.

The agenda of the three-day meeting at CCP's Headquarters in Reykjavik was centered around the concerns the delegates had managed to gather.

Over the course of the CSM meeting, more than 30 game related issues were discussed by Councillors and senior members of the CCP development team, which included game designers, programmers, storyline staff and members of the quality assurance team. The meetings were chaired and moderated by a neutral arbitrator from an Icelandic university.

Many issues and ideas raised by the CSM were accepted by CCP and are being built into the game development pipeline for implementation in future patches. Other ideas were seen as problematic to implement but compromises and alternatives were discussed for further feasibility investigation by CCP. A few ideas were dismissed outright on the basis of being technically difficult to implement without diverting huge programming/development resources, at the detriment of advancing other elements of the game.

"We had a great dialogue with the developers and they were exceedingly open to our ideas and suggestions and pretty straightforward in explaining technical limitations where not. It was clear that some changes we suggested were already on CCP's agenda, but it was also nice to see the occasional 'Eureka', - 'why didn't we think of that?' moment amongst the developers. This clearly demonstrated the value of the process both to us as players but also to CCP," said Andrew Cruse, Chairman of the CSM.

As part of their trip to Iceland the CSM Councillors were taken to visit the birthplace of Icelandic democracy at Thingvellir (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9Eingvellir...). Thingvellir is reputedly home to the oldest Parliament in the world. From 930 AD chieftains' from across Iceland would meet there annually to discuss the law and settle disputes. During the visit to Thingvellir, Dr. Eyjólfur Guðmundsson, CCP's lead economist, made a rousing speech describing the CSM delegates as the first 'Internet chieftains' and 'pioneers' of democracy in online communities.

"While it is very gratifying to be described as an 'Internet chieftain' what really matters is proving to our constituents, the players of EVE, that we have actually delivered results that improve the virtual universe in which they play. To that extent we are reliant on CCP continuing to be an active partner in the process and delivering on the promises made in Iceland," said Sean Conover, a CSM delegate.

Currently the new and free expansion, Empyrean Age is being deployed. Parts of the EVE Online site is disabled as CCP Games work on having the game patched and ready for the new age.

Due to parts of the site being unavailable as the patch is being deployed, CCP Games have launched a page where they post constant updates and interesting tidbits of information. And when I say constant updates, I mean it. They frequently update this page several times per hour pretty much. Sometimes news take a bit longer to come out, but it's worth to check back often.

The page in question I'm talking about can be found here and it's named "Downtime News". Pretty cool way of keeping EVE players up to date.

As for more information on the expansion, you can find it on the Downtime News page and also in previous news that we've posted over at our EVE Online portal. We posted two trailers and information about the deployment schedule. More info about the free summer expansion was posted here.

It's quite impressive how CCP Games arrange special package deals to bring EVE Online players all the way to Iceland. Iceland is well known for their Blue Lagoon where you can soak in the milky turquoise waters in a lunar-like landscape of lava fields, the lagoon is renowned for its health benefits and its mineral-rich, geothermal seawater. This might be another reason to get a few days off and enjoy all that Iceland has to offer, regardless of the reason - CCP Games makes it easier and more accessible and it shows that they really care about their game.

Anyone planning to attend?

About a week ago the Icelandic CCP Games announced that they are going to release yet another major update to their praised Sci-Fi MMO Eve Online. The company have named it Empyrean Age and we've posted about it here, here and here previously.

Also as you can probably tell from the news cast in the trailers below, it's far from peace that Empyrean Age will bring.
