Fallen Earth Dev Journal With Art Director! Checkout Before and After Screenshots!

Posted Sep 21, 2009 by DoranM
    Filed in Fallen Earth

Fallen Earth will launch later this week, allowing players to explore the apocalyptic wasteland near the Grand Canyon after a virus has wiped out most of the population on the planet. Wonder what happens to buildings with nobody around to slap that fresh coat of paint on the house every 5 summers? We've received a new development journal with Fallen Earth Art Director Chris Deavellar highlighting some of the things that were done to give the game a truly apocalyptic feel! We've also included several new screenshots in the journal; Enjoy!

    Fallen Earth Overhauls Buildings

Journal with Art Director, Chris Deavellar

When a game has been in development as long as Fallen Earth has, legacy issues are one of the largest pitfalls for artists and designers. When I became art director on the project about seven months ago, I took a good, hard look at the state of the art in the game.

In my job as “the closer,” I've had the opportunity to evaluate and improve areas of the game where I felt we were lacking visually. Working closely with the engine designers (one of whom was my former lead artist), we have improved the lighting, added normal mapped terrain, and we have improved the sky by replacing the procedural clouds with a hand painted texture. We are working to make these major improvements even better.

At the close of these major projects, I knew that our buildings still needed work. Over the years, we've amassed a huge library of buildings, and adding polish for all of them would be a tremendous undertaking. After re-evaluating our process, we have implemented several methods of improving the look of our buildings, adding detail and actually improving performance.

Starting with houses, we looked at the problem from a couple of angles. Most houses have a very similar makeup in their construction. We made a list of the things one would typically see in a house: old electric outlets, roof supports, stairs, railings, doors and windows, among other things.

We then made these assets and placed them on a single texture. Working on a single texture allowed us to add a lot more detail to the additions while saving on texture memory since these items were used in every house. To add the look of destruction that is commonplace for our genre, we made a second texture map with various types of broken walls, broken 2x4s, rotten plywood, and other rubble. Since most houses use a similar construction, the elements of destruction could also be consistent, giving us the opportunity to add more detail to them.

The second challenge was to re-think our texture library. We had a very large variety of textures, but many of them were redundant. Rather than continuing to parse detail from all of them, we reduced our library to a bare minimum. With a few good base textures, we began to add details. A wall texture, for example, was given mold at the bottom, dripping water stains at the top, and some molding and floorboards. If other colors or details are needed for future rooms, we now have the ability to expand on the library without blowing our texture memory.

The last major improvement was to look at the buildings as real-world structures, considering their degradation over the years. The artists are taking a lot of time to add in broken bricks and siding, busted walls and floors, and to make these buildings look run down. Adding this kind of detail can be a laborious process, but we can make improve speed and efficiency using a technique called “kit bashing.” In kit bashing, we use pieces of other models repeatedly. In the early stages of improving our structures, each detail is created from scratch, keeping in mind that many of those details will be repurposed later in other structures. Once a few buildings are complete, we repurpose pieces from them to drop into another building. Broken brick walls, destroyed roofs, and decayed siding are some of the different things we'll use between models to save time while creating a great looking building.

Renovating our buildings and improving performance will take a while, but the results are worth the effort. In the coming months we plan to continue revamping our buildings. In addition to giving the game a substantial visual upgrade, we are taking full advantage of some of the tech that is at our disposal. Players will begin to notice the improvements as we continue to re-evaluate our method for making structures.

Hot Summer Getaways In The Grand Canyon Province

Fallen Earth, the upcoming MMO set in a post-apocalyptic future, has a bit of a travel guide to share with everyone today. The Grand Canyon Province is home to six warring factions, all vying for dominance of the ruined zone in the shadow of one of America's most iconic landmarks. It doesn't hurt to be prepared before you enter such a warzone, so here's a travel guide we were given to identify the zone's hotspots.

Hot Summer Getaways In The Grand Canyon Province

If your idea of a good summer is tolerating the desert heat in the Grand Canyon Province, there are a bevy of hidden hot spots for vacationers of every sort. Many are just a short horse ride or dune buggy ride away and provide some interesting entertainment for first time visitors. Today we’ll take a look at three areas for weekend getaways: Embry Crossroads, Trailer Park and Murder Hole.

Embry Crossroads, considered the jewel of the Plateau, has an eclectic mix of culture—everything from shopping to religious encounters to a Monster Hunt. Visitors will be enchanted by Lovely Temple Row, called Kooks’ Alley by some for the large number of preachers and practitioners of various beliefs. For those interested in exploring the spiritual leanings of the Province, Temple Row is cultural tourism at its best.

For those a little less spiritually inclined, Embry has a lot of interesting communities that offer distinct shopping opportunities. Visitors to the Uptown area will find a number of excellent shops. This part of town offers a selection of high-end wares like none other, with many local businesses opening their doors to visitors who want to make their own goods. With a horde of craftsmen and unique shop owners, if you can’t buy it in Embry, it can’t be bought!

Off the beaten path, Lowtown may at first seem like a populated bevy of seedy little shanties, but for the bargain shopper, it’s a dream. If you can’t afford the prices uptown, the lowtown market is the place for you. Visitors should take caution to avoid the large piles of garbage in the streets, but that’s a small price to pay when goods are this cheap.

For educational tourists, Embry is home to the Open Book Society in an area of town called the Ascent. Although some tourists have reported mixed feelings about this interesting group of people, many report them to be pleasant, friendly and very intriguing.

For the scientifically minded, Embry has quite possibly one of the best-run LifeNet facilities in the whole Plateau. Tended by a darling older gentleman named Graham, the facility provides a great stopping place for those interested in DNA research and cloning.

No stop to Embry would be complete without a little adventure. Embry Crossroads is home to Monster Hunts, run by the Bankers. If you’ve ever wanted to live the life of a true monster slayer, now is your chance! It’s free to join and free to watch, but locals may ask for minor donations for care and housing of the beasts before the battle. Big game hunters, put this on your must-do list!

Another less-explored area of the Province is Trailer Park, a true hidden gem. You’re not likely to find a more colorful bunch of folks than the citizens of Trailer Park. The quirky residents love to talk to visitors, and will regale you with conspiracy theories and get-rich-quick schemes. They even make hats out of tinfoil!

If you’re looking to tour some sludgeries, you won’t find nicer ones in the Province than in Trailer Park, which is home to not one, but TWO working sludgeries: Van Kirk’s Sludge Well and Galloway’s Sludgemastery. The sandy spackle-like sludge is prized for its industrial uses. If you’ve never seen sludge being dredged, it’s quite a sight. Crafters rave about Trailer Park’s wonderful sludge.

Just a short trip away is Hoffa Bunker, reputed to be the underground bunker holding the remains and lost treasure of a pre-Fall celebrity named Jimmy Hoffa. Some tourists report problems with investigating the claims, as the Bunker is sometimes overrun with Throwbacks, an interesting local mutant variety. For the hardier travelers looking for adventure, or treasure hunters seeking fortune, the Hoffa Bunker is the place to be.

If you haven’t gotten your fill of danger and excitement in Hoffa Bunker, just take a scenic trip to Murder Hole. Not for the faint of heart, there’s little to be said about Murder Hole other than its name. There’s nothing like open warfare to get your heart pumping, and that’s exactly the kind of adventure tourism Murder Hole provides.

Representatives of all the major factions can be found in quaint camps surrounding the area. An industrious visitor can make a pretty penny here, but take care. While you’re hunting for resources, others may be hunting you! Serial killers, mass murderers or those simply interested in hunting the most dangerous game of all—Murder Hole is your home away from home.

For these traveling adventures and many others, your getaway destination in the Grand Canyon Province is a short trip from home.

Fallen Earth Fashion Guides - Dressing for the Apocalypse!

Fallen Earth has released a new fashion guide for some of the weapons, armor, and equipables available in the game! Like any apocalyptic wasteland outfit - they don't always match! Utility and function are the reasons for wearing gear in the Fallen Earth universe, mixing and matching gear to survive wins over color coordination. Product manager Jessica "Circatrix" Orr recently took time time out to talk about some of the weapons and armor available in Fallen Earth!

Dressing for the Apocalypse: What Not to Wear in the Wasteland
(with Product Manager for Fallen Earth, Jessica “Circatrix” Orr)

Whether you’re dressing for less or you have a lot of chips to blow, finding summer fashion for the Apocalypse is a cinch. As we’re struggling to beat the heat in North American summer, top fashion gurus in the Grand Canyon Province acknowledge that matching tops and coordinated accessories are so 2000. Instead, the well-equipped mutant will be sporting mismatched basics with a flair for the fantastic. We’ll review a few of the more trendy pieces and a few of the season’s “must-haves” for Fallen Earth.

Corkscrew: This tiny accessory is “killing me softly”-quality for any wasteland survivor. As a first level weapon with a purse-sized punch of nine points of damage per attack, this weapon could be easily classified as the most embarrassing way to die.

Glowing Edge Swords: Pervasive in all areas of culture, metallics and shimmer are in this season, especially with glowing swords. One model, used for the Lightbearer Acolyte’s Sword and the Lightbearer Messenger’s Sword, is slightly reminiscent of a katana and only available to fashionistas who are highly faction-oriented. Players who aggressively pursue these items can acquire them in Sectors Two and Three. Guaranteed, these rare but incredible two-handed designer finds will only be available for players with a bent for leveling and accomplishment.

Chaps: Now more popular with pants underneath, chaps donned by survivors in black or brown give fifth level attire that Southwestern wasteland feeling.

Glowing Mace: You guessed it. The sparkle is on—especially if you’re bedazzling your opponent with one of the five different Tech maces that players earn by progressing through the Tech faction. Ranging from the 25th level and beyond, the Tech mace is a one-handed weapon whose sparkle will make players wonder: “What the hell are the Techs up to in their research?” On the cheap-chic end, the Tech Student’s Mace and Tech Apprentice’s Mace are easier to come by. Top end designs belong with the Tech Journeyman’s Mace, the Tech Technician’s Mace and the Tech Master Technician’s Mace.

Top Hat: A 10th level armor item with a pretty typical spread of armor values, this dashing accessory tops off any mediocre ensemble.

Monocle: The smart look is sexy, and readily available for the newly-regenerated clone. One of the early Optics items in Fallen Earth, the eye piece offers no armor value, but improves the player’s Perception by 1 and adds smashing flair to any wasteland basics that might otherwise seem blasé.

Hide Pants: Coined by a fashion expert and game designer for Fallen Earth, hide pants are “a thing you wear, not a thing you do.” Stitched together from several unrelated hides, these 15th level pants, along with camouflage fatigues, gain street cred with the masses until they find other options available in places such as Park City.

Warlord Plate: Nothing to joke about, this piece of armor is out to make a statement. This high-end level armor will put the wearer comfortably over the game’s mitigation cap—in street terms, that’s “better armor than you could possibly need” at that level of the game. The stretch limo of fashion finds, this armor carries major Coordination penalties, but also provides a huge Melee Defense bonus. With the impression of bulk and strength from head-to-toe, this bolt-on has it goin’ on.

CHOTA Skull Maces: Emblazoned with a skull, these beauties are bad ass. Three different types of CHOTA maces are available to players through the CHOTA faction, ranging from 35th level and up. Named the CHOTA Anarchist’s Mace, the CHOTA Warrior’s Mace and the CHOTA Ravager’s Mace, they do due damage, and fashionably so.

Hub Cap Axe: Recycling is all the rage, and why not do it with weapons? Four axes found in Fallen Earth sport the recycled hub cap motif: the Junk Axe, the Crude War Axe, the Caddy Axe (short for “Cadillac,” a huge old-world car with class), and the War Axe. Ranging from 20th to 30th level, these sharpened hubcaps bolted to two-by-fours are proof of industrious players.

Pink Pistols: Though not readily available on a broad scale, these gems sport a pink grip and/or a pink barrel and can occasionally be seen on handguns and assault rifles.

Hazmat Suits: Crisis comes in all shapes and sizes but players in the Phoenix Gear survive in style and are protected from poisons, radiation, acid and disease. Not as restrictive as the Warlord Gear, the outfit sports a re-breather built into the chest piece and a helmet—an attractive, yet functional high-tech gas mask.

    Q&A on Alpha Testing

The official forums of Fallen Earth hosts a weekly Q&A session, and this week the questions are centered on the recent announcement of closed alpha testing. Something for Europeans:

    2. When choosing people for Alpha and Beta, does it matter I am from Europe and not America?

At this stage we're primarily looking at North American testers due to connection speeds and such, but in later stages this may not be the case. Remember, a big part of what we're doing first is ironing out technical wrinkles.

    3. What are your plans on releasing the game in Europe? Can we expect FE to arrive in our stores here about the same day they will hit the US stores?

We're not sure yet. This is one of those situations where business negotiations are underway, so I can't say much for fear of jinxing it or giving someone the wrong idea. Suffice to say we are working with some folks in Europe to get the game on European shelves as soon as we can. Believe me, we like Euros as much as dollars (if not more these days) so it's in our best interests to get the game out to Europe as soon as possible.

    Major Development Milestone Reached

Posted Jun 20, 2008 by Zyuu
    Filed in Fallen Earth

The developers of Fallen Earth have announced that the FE project has reached Alpha status and is now feature complete.

For the last six months, the Fallen Earth team has implemented new production processed which has improved product quality and also streamlined development schedule. This is good news, I'm personally quite curious about this post-apocalyptic MMO.

Colin Dwan, who was promoted from Lead Engineer to Project Manager, said, “Fallen Earth has great technology and tons of content, but we needed to put a stake in the ground about all the features that were absolutely necessary to ship with. Now that we’ve finalized that long list, we’ve been able to spend all of our time making those features really fun.”

The Fallen Earth Art Department focused on an in-depth upgrading of the game’s overall appearance, improving textures, animations, and enriching the overall “look” of the game. Human models have been completely revamped, and newly added creatures include giant genetically engineered super soldiers and vicious killer fungi. Volumetric fog has been added and many towns have been completely rebuilt to take advantage of new building models and ecosystem options.

The Fallen Earth team has created a variety of new vehicle models from muscle cars to motorcycles to ATVs. They have also enhanced the vehicle combat system using the same basis as player-based combat so players will be able to attack from their vehicles, be it with pistols from a motorcycle or dual-mounted machine guns from a muscle car.

The core functionality players expect from an MMO, such as raids, clans, auction house, and a mail system, are now up and running in Fallen Earth. Players can combine their efforts in raids of up to four groups or thirty-two players, allowing them to tackle larger threats and compete more effectively in PvP activities. Clans allow players to form large social groups with a number of different ranks, each with its own configurable name and permission list. The auction house system allows players to sell goods to each other with ease, and to search the auction house for items needed for a specific recipe. The mail system enables players to easily stay in contact and trade goods among themselves through the vigilant efforts the Franklin’s Riders, the postal service within Fallen Earth.

I have my eyes on Fallen Earth, anyone else curious about how it will turn out after all the changes to the games graphics? With all the content promised and the features mentioned, its definitely worth a try.

Italian site interviews Fallen Earth Devs

The Italian gaming site AlterEgo recently had an interview with the developers of Fallen Earth.

They start out with asking what Fallen Earth is all about, since frankly, not that many know a lot about Fallen Earth so far.

"Fallen Earth is a post-apocalyptic massively multiplayer online game that mixes first person shooter and role playing game style mechanics. It is set in the area around the Grand Canyon in the southwestern United States one hundred years after the fall of civilization, which was caused by the Shiva Virus. The Shiva Virus is a mutational virus that alters the DNA of those who get infected, creating a variety of mutations among the survivors, both human and beast."

The developers continue by explaining what will make Fallen Earth diversify itself from other sci-fi MMORPGs on the market. Basically, to get equipment in FE, you have to scavenge items like rusted pipes, leather, football pads or whatever else you might come across. It's really a "true" post apocalyptic theme to the whole world and the system seems to be built around it. Quite interesting, I just wonder how well it'll work in reality.

Apparently the features of FE is done and the content is expected to be finished in a couple of months. On the subject of combat system, the FE developers explain that it's a mix of a FPS system with several RPG style elements. When the question of why there's only one race in the game, the dev's said that it didn't make much sense to have more, since FE is set in a not too distant future.

Furthermore, crafting and the faction system is covered, the level system as well, not to mention how the endgame is planned to be like. Continue over to AlterEgo to read the rest of the interview. The first part is in Italian, so scroll down to find the English version.

The official forums provides us with a fan Questions & Answers that contain ten questions that the developers of Fallen Earth have answered.

    4. Have you thought about providing a bot for clans/organizations/whatever - chat (like in Anarchy Online, as example, even if the bots there are provided by players)?

Currently, we don't have plans for something like that. We may look at adding something similar eventually, but it would be way down the road.

    5. Will we be able to choose our own color for the clothing we make as crafters?

On some items, yes. Generally, clothes can be made in a number of colors, but most armor cannot. For example, most shirts, pants, and shoes have multiple color options while Marauder Plate or Safari Shin Guards only come in one model.

    6. Aside from glasses and eye patches, what else can we put over the eyes - a cloth that goes over one eye or both?

All sorts of stuff: 3-D glasses, visors, gas masks, safety goggles, monocles. Currently, bandanas or other cloths cannot be worn over the eyes.
