Bioware and Lucas Arts to team up

Taken straight from the mouth itself, Lucas Arts and Bioware have today announced that they will be teaming up to deliver a new interactive entertainment title.

LucasArts and BioWare Corp. today announced that they have entered into an agreement to create an interactive entertainment product. The product, details of which will be unveiled at a later date, will be developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, and will push the boundaries of the gaming market by utilizing the strengths of both companies to deliver an innovative, high-quality experience.

“LucasArts has a deep commitment to developing compelling stories and characters for the unique medium of interactive entertainment, and we have been searching for a developer that shares this value. We found this in BioWare,” said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. “Through our previous collaborations, we know that BioWare has an impressive ability to blend gripping stories with technological advancements, and we believe that our upcoming product will deliver an experience that will span the traditional boundaries of video game entertainment.”

“BioWare’s mission is to deliver the best story and character-driven games in the world, delivering powerful emotional experiences to our fans.” said Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer, BioWare Corp. Added Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare Corp., “The collaboration with LucasArts allows us to combine our passion for creating high quality and innovative experiences with those of a company dedicated to bringing only the finest games to market."

The last title that Bioware and Lucas Arts teamed up on was the multi-award winning Game of the Year, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The title proved to be a massive success for Lucas Arts and Bioware alike. Despite this however, Bioware did not sign up to work on the follow up to the title, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, with Obsidian taking Biowares place.

Recently, Bioware announced that they would be developing a brand new MMORPG title, the first to come out of the veteran development team and many fans of the company began talking about what the title might be. Many fans settled on a new IP or a new Star Wars MMO when rumours that Bioware had approached Lucas Arts with the offer of a collaboration on a new project emerged. This announcement will serve to reinforce the rumours that Bioware are indeed working on a new Star Wars MMORPG set around the time period first introduced in the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game.

Along with the announcement, a new website to reprisent the partnership has appeared where you can read the official press release.

I hope it's a D&D mmorpg, would smash WAR to pieces...

You mean the D+D franchise that already has an active MMORPG? :-P To be perfectly honest, the fact that they've just announced an MMO title and that they have announced a partnership with Lucas Arts does suggest that long awaited KotOR MMO is on the way or at least KotOR 3.

A KotoR MMO would be beyond my wildest dreams if they can pull it off

I really hope it is a KotOR MMO, as the one major problem I had with SW:G (apart from the whole 'completely changing the game right under the feet of the players' thing) was that it simply did not follow the established Star Wars canon - right at the time when Jedi were supposed to be virtually wiped out and the few that were left were trying their best to hide from the Imperial forces, in SW:G, you had hundreds of folk openly running around in jedi robes with big, glowy lightsabres. Making a new SW MMO, but setting it in KotOR times would let your players be Jedi and also follow lore.

Well, I had a huge post written, but I thought to better dispense with a history lesson. People must realize that if KOTOR Online were the new MMO in development, it would NOT be a new SWG and the systems would be completely different. Those of us whom loved SWG originally must completely put aside our feelings about SWG and what happened to SWG. We must not let our previous feelings cloud our judgment when faced with a fresh MMO based on the same IP. This may be a bit much to ask of people due to the amount of anger still floating around the net.

Tho, if it were a Star Wars MMO, wouldn't LEC just take a hint form Blizzard and develop and maintain everything related in-house so there aren't so many conflicts of interest and philosophies?

LucasArts is in an interesting position here. They saw what BioWare did with KOTOR, and that is no doubt the driving force behind the decision to partner with them for a new project. This may not even be the new MMO BioWare is working on, but it wouldn't surprise me if we see KOTOR Online announced next year.

BioWare has a track record for creating great games, so this was a great move for LucasArts.

My honest opinion? I really hope it is NOT a KOTOR MMO. The feel of the game would translate into the MMO genre poorly at best.

I mean half the reason KOTOR was as awesome as it was is because it did not have the 'grind'. Put that in and I think alot of the game would be "lost in translation" as an MMO.

But if i'm wrong and it turns out to be an amazing Star Wars game, i'll be the first person to shout from the rooftops "I was wrong". Sometimes being proven wrong is a good thing. Until then I'm keeping my head out of the clouds and will watch quietly as the news progresses into something more than media hype.
