World of Warcraft

Wowhead.com acquired by 'Affinity Media'

Today we have seen another success, or disappointment, however you may view it, of another large World of Warcraft site. Wowhead.com, one of the fastest growing World of Warcraft fansites, was aquired by Affinity Media.

Reported by several sources, the deal was for approximately $1,000,000, purchased by a company with ties, whether they are still intact or not, to virtual currency marketing.

Why can't I see the downside here ? Except from adverts they already used to gain some income.

They can only be bigger than they currently are, team up with perhaps some good crews to expand their functionality or even try to get some more influence on the blizz side of the story..

I just can't do anything else than congratulations to be honest...

    @Jarlaxle

Well... I'm working with Norganna and 2 other people.

We just got the site design down this morning and we'll be working on the code for everything once Norganna gets back on.

You do realize the site doesn't work, ya? :)

Curse will launch its full database with v4 early next month.

Curse needs a fast ultra portable and quickly updated Talent Calculator ... then I wouldn't need Wowhead at all.

It's probably coming in the next release of curse - V4 :)

Wowhead was one of my favorite Warcraft info sites, now I hope they'll keep their previous standard despite the change in owner. I'm probably fooling myself though, and it'll end-up like Thot or Allakhazam.

@KeeZnl: The downside is that it's owned by gold farmers, and I refuse to support such business.

No worries, like Zinor said v4 is in the works and I really think you guys are going to be more than impressed. I honestly don't see myself going anywhere else for anything except for WoWace.com.

    Hi All,

Why don't you read the news release on WoWhead.com and if you have any more questions, send them to the link provided. I for one will not get paranoid and wait to see what happens with the site.

Speculation and rumors are just fuel for gossips and lies.

I for one will use Wowhead.com, until i see a physical chance that causes me to look at another site.

P.S. live your life in the now, for the past has gone and future has not been created as yet.

I don't see what all this is about " I won't use Wowhead now because gold sellers brought them"

Have people actually read the news post that was put on wowhead.com? They had a Q & A session...

Note: Tim is Wowhead CEO, John is president of the ZAM Network. Q: Didn't you sell to a bunch of gold sellers? A: Tim: Nope, and that would have been a deal killer. The ZAM guys are an independent content business, and they don't promote RMT (Real Money Trade). Period. You will never see gold ads on Wowhead or their other ZAM sites. We made sure that was true before proceeding.

Q: So you are sure Wowhead will not have gold ads now? A: John: 100% sure. Neither Wowhead or the ZAM Network have ever had gold or powerleveling ads, and they never will. We sold IGE. We are clearly separating our business from those practices. Why would we start running gold ads now?

So I see no problems here, and think that Wowhead will just grow, If I did see a Gold AD there, I would stop using immediately, but until I see one, I have no problems with Wowhead.

WowHead.com has always been and always will be gold advertisement selling free :) I for one will continue to use that site for most of my needs for WoW because it has saved me a ton of time in the past asking crafters and other professions people the materials required to make an item, and has given me useful information for completeing quests

And wowhead.com "selling out", i laugh at that only because if you (the people saying they sold out) had in fact started that site yourselves would sell the site and its "business" to make money, so dont kid yourselves on this.

Not to rain on your "I Love Wowhead" parade but I hope you are right. I know a few other sites that said the same thing when they were bought out and you see what happened.

  • Sat, Jun 23 2007 6:07 AM ()

    Elderdd,

Nothing to do with as you say "I Love Wowhead" parade but thinking positively and waiting for situations to arise. I am not saying that it will not happen but until it does, I will continue to use the site and stop speculating about what ifs, since what ifs have not happened yet.

Btw which sites are you referring to and please provide factual information on such sites. It would be good to publicize such sites as to ensure we never use them.

Great now the web link is "404"

Alakhazam and Thottbot both went WAY down hill after they were bought out. Thottbot still doesn't have all the BC stuff on it, what good is that?

It seems like the WoWHead guys have there hands pretty firm on the deal, unlike what seemed to have been shown by Thott and Allakhazam. I trust the WoWHead guys to do good on this.
