World of Warcraft

Teen burns friend; WoW gets blamed

It seems that blaming violent acts by the minority is perfect grounds to persecute the content of PC games like World of Warcraft as, once again, we are presented with a remote case that is being treated strangely like a persistent problem.

A 17-year old Chinese boy attacked and burned a classmate from School and then promptly blamed World of Warcraft for his actions.

The boy had earlier been in a fight with the victim, which he had lost. He later decided to take revenge on the victim by dousing him in gasoline and setting him on fire. The victim suffered third-degree burns on 38% of his body and the attacker claims that he lost himself in World of Warcraft. Whilst setting the victim alight, he claims he transformed into a Fire Mage.

The 17-year old boy received 8 years in prison and his accomplice received seven. The victim will receive compensation after suffering burns to 55% of his body and the parents of both the attacker and the accomplice have been ordered to pay a fine of 750,000 RMB.

Sadly, people will do anything to avoid taking responsibility for their own actions.

thats stupid, people do anything to escape there stupidity

Absolute bullshit; people have done things like that just because they were pissed at a person, and it had nothing to do with a game. People need to stop blaming everything but themselves, and learn to take responsibility for their actions.

Of the 9.3 million players online, we have a handful who behave this way. I can bet that people are going to start questioning the game's suitability for the younger audiences or anyone for that matter, but really... look at the numbers. There are more violent games out there that make wow seem sissy... If you're a madman, it does not matter if you play violent video games or not.... You'll still end up killing people, so i REALLY HOPE that people don't start labeling wow as a dangerous game. Can we get the link to the story?

    I R CASTIN MAJIK MISLES!

but ya, the only reason why they [attacker] blames a video game is to shift some of the blame and hopefully receive a lesser sentence

man...what ever happen to just beating the *** out of each other to solve a dispute[...i mean dueling...]?

Welcome to gun control! Firearms have been taking the heat for the ill actions of idiots for a long time. When if only those that have been victims had been armed!

Oh my, nothing like blaming something/somebody else for one's own deliberated actions.

Did he think he could have quickly hearthed out of trouble?

  • Sat, Dec 29 2007 11:03 AM ()

I guess he didn't use a Rank 9 Scorch since he only did third-degree burns or maybe he had low spell dmg. haha

How can people call WoW a violent game? It's almost cartoony-like and there isn't a drop of blood in the game. Retards

Bah.....another shift the blame for my own stupidity defense. It's a shame we sometimes have to weed out the stupidty in society after someone gets hurt or dies.

The sad part of all this is that those two knuckleheads that committed this atrocious act will be free to walk the streets one day and the poor kid that was burned will live with his problem the rest of his life.

I agree. 't Was a foolish action, I think he prepared the entire sketch. 'I lost myselves in the World of Warcraft! I transformed into a Firemage!!'. People like that do not deserve to play games. They shouldn't be allowed to play games, for they will only blame them for their own faults and mistakes.

    People like that discust me.

I guess I have to agree somewhat. Though having such an abundance of weapons available can't be healthy if you wish to reduce homicides.
It's harder, both physically and mentally, to kill someone using your own means (kick,hit,strangle,...) than to bend your index finger and squeeze a trigger.
So the whole "Guns don't kill people, People kill people" is not a definitive defence of weapons.
Shooting have little to no implications to you (in the present situation of shooting someone), which can be a reason why people are more "Triggerhappy" than "Stranglehappy".

Why is it always the chinese who commit suicide/almost kill because of WoW?

Anyway I don't remember seeing gasoline in WoW, if he did try and become a firemage he'd at least light his hands on fire so it'd look like he's casting a fireball. Pittyfull excuse to burning someone...

It was probably some kids that worked in a gold farming sweat shop and play 16 hours a day.

Eh, dowsing someone in gasoline like that is more like a Warlock's Immolate.

Scorch is instant damage I believe. This attack would have had to be a DoT.
