I will tell you what seems to have worked for me. I'm running win 7 home - AVG 2012. set updates to manual in curse client. go to the task bar (bottom right of window small icon) and right click avg 2012 icon. Choose temporarily disable avg,. you can choose from 10 min and up. After its disabled run your updates.for curse. after updates are finished restart avg.(double click on avg icon onscreen or from task bar}
Note: you may need to uninstall curse client and reinstall while avg is disabled. I would also sugjest deleting old setup file and downdload a new one after running defrag. This may not be nessisary for everyone but its a good tip for getting things to install correctly.
Let me know if anyone else can repeat my results my curse client stars up every time now.
PS. I just joined the forum tonight, for this post. I use curse for World of Warcraft.
Windows 7 home
Asrock 970 Extreme mainboard
ATI HD 4830 graphics 256 bit
Amd 955 BE @3.8
Gskill Ripjaws Xddr3 1333 @ 7-7-7-21

I have not repeated your result as I cant find the option to disable avg temporarely on my version an dI do not dare deinstall it.
However I manage to start teh client these days by having the curse homepage opened in my browser before starting the client.
Havent had a start up issue since. Its not ideal ofc but it not a big deal for me either..
