A simple introduction to the Warhammer 40k Universe.

Greetings everyone.

This is a small article with the sole purpose on acquainting people to Warhammer 40k.

As Douglas Adams said about the universe in his book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and I quote “the universe is really, really big place. You cannot possibly imagine how miniscule everyone and everything is compared to it.” Or was it a little different? Hm. Well you get my point.

The Warhammer story begins even before the ‘90s with a tabletop game called “Rogue Trader” It was very simple and “monolithic” at the time but it was enough to get people hooked. Some years later, Games Workshop (the company that has created and still evolves and maintains the game) made some radical changes in it –while keeping more or less the plot unchanged- (thank god) and their new baby, Warhammer 40.000, was born.

At the particular time that the game came out, it had only a small fraction of that things that are actually contained in the complete tabletop that people (such as myself) play. Had only 3 or 4 different races/armies to choose from and the game rules were set at the very basics for just conducting normal battles in annihilation mode. (Meaning he who obliterates the opposing army wins. Simple eh?) The real magic with this game (besides the unrivaled feeling of just zero-ing your opponents army) was its lore. Warhammer 40k has simply one of the most amazing background stories that games of this kind ever had. It was that simple fact that this game drew so many –and will keep drawing- players at its ranks.

Games Workshop themselves and after them, writers fans and many others contributed in small or large pieces, in forming this huge lore that comprises Warhammer 40k today. There are literally hundreds of planets, solar systems, alien races (although a handful are playable) and distinguished NPCs to get you hooked on and start screaming “For the Emperor!” on the top of your lungs while enjoying a game with a friend of yours. I have been playing this game for over 10 years. Never seized to offer me great fun (and a reason to debate the rules with an opposing player :P ) on the battlefield or reading one of its many, many books.

When THQ –a really great gaming company, in my own opinion- announced that they got the rights of doing the MMO I couldn’t sleep for 3 days. Sure, I have my dose of it via the tabletop or books, but I really look a *very* good reason to dump WoW (Sorry Blizz!) even though I enjoy raiding SSC and all that fuzz , and concentrate on an MMO that will really give me that lore and RP setting that WoW never offered.

Closing I should mention that I might have been wrong on a couple of points here and there but people are always free to correct me  Lets hope we see some screens of the game soon and maybe get a release date off it.

    Thank you Kody.

In the following days I will make some more adjustments so it will fit its title a little bit more. Aka I'll add its lore :P

I agree, more writers who don't write about WoW please! :D

We won't be deleting the article as long as it follows all guidelines and the terms of service. The members of the Curse community will moderate it as they see fit in all other cases. :)

Also, we'll hopefully be making it a little easier to understand the news categories with the new website; they're going to be undergoing an overhaul to make more sense.

    Lore

Although it doesn't really fit that well, its the best category for this article.

Remember, Curse encourages people to write articles and discuss them either on the forums, or via comments like here. So good going Vorryn ;)

Hm. Maybe I should have taken out the personal touch about the game but I guess you can never be 100% objective, right? I could go on and on about the lore (which is what I consider a real introduction) but then I think that people would have found it borring.

@Jarlaxle: Thanks. About the category thing. Well it was a little confusing for me to see it posted there. You are free to move or delete it as you see fit. On a side note, yea, WH is material for MMOFPS rather than RP but has enough lore to go for both.

@Asherett: Maybe I have never posted an article before? Maybe I am not a native english speaker? There are a couple other thing that I would say against myself here but try to get the big picture. Writting in such a way maybe would give the reader a broader picture of how WH gamers are attached to this game and how much many people anticipate it.

Yea its kinda weird... he did post under the wrong category. Developer journals ? I don't think so.

And yes, he didn't really introduce us into the universe. He described his feelings and love for the Warhammer 40k lore

We at Curse encourage such articles though. Especially if its not about WoW.

I don't know much about the tabletop game and the actual universe, but I know that Relic did an awesome job with Dawn of War. The atmosphere was great, and all the races and units were really cool.

THQ never made a MMO before, and I think they are going for the safe route, probably making a WoW clone or something.

But for me, the best way would be to make the Warhammer 40k MMO as a MMOFPS with an emphasis on PvP (isn't that the whole point of Warhammer, wars ? even Mythic's game main focus is PvP)

What is this text supposed to be? It certainly isn't an introduction to WH40K... Tips to the author: take an overview of your text before publishing, checking for such things as:

Am I doing what I purported to do? Am I confusing the words "seize" and "cease"? :P Am I rambling on pointlessly about my personal life?
