Mabinogi Was Hacked by A 16-year-old Boy

Other | Jan. 28, 2008 (7 months ago) | by meteo | via news.mmosite.com | Filed in Mabinogi

Recently, some Japanese media reported that a 16-year-old teen boy from Japan hacked the website of Nexon Japan and stole 36 million yen (325,000 Dollars) worth of game points used in Mabinogi, a popular MMORPG published in Japan by Nexon. But according to the report, the teenager originally wanted to have the dress worn by the princess.

According to investigators, the suspect used software from an illegal website to obtain the ID and password of a former NEXON employee, which he used to access the company's servers from his home computer last October. Once inside NEXON's system, he registered a new ID and password and began filling his coffers with the in-game money.

While most of the loot went unused, the suspect allegedly converted 7 million points into about 600,000 yen (5,500 Dollars) worth of web money, which he used to purchase books and software.

This hacking event has provoked a lot of discussion among the public, who are shocked that a gamer can even hack into an online game company's billing system.

It is reported that Nexon Japan has set out to re-evaluate their servers' security system and has already established a 24-hour monitoring system.

What disturbs me is not what he did but rather that people think it's really THAT easy to do. With an even moderately secure system, this would be EXTREMELY difficult. You can't just browse to an IP address of a company's servers and arbitrarily upload files, it's a little more complicated than that.

Yes, things like this can technically be done easily on a system with a large flaw but they're really not that common, especially in a large business environment. Besides, people are being far too liberal with their use of terms they don't really understand. Nothing about this really sounds like a trojan was used, he probably just used a program that was designed to exploit a very specific flaw in the system.

I personally find it amusing simply because the company could have easily avoided such an attack by maintaining security updates but it's unfortunate that people like this make truly talented hackers look like a joke.

"...it's unfortunate that people like this make truly talented hackers look like a joke."

I agree with 99% of what you say. However, don't you think that a truly talented hacker would not have been caught?

"things like this can technically be done easily on a system with a large flaw"

Like a home computer of a former employee who is dumb enough to use his admin user/password for other things. And if he is dumb enough to do that, well, wouldnt be that hard to upload something to him. But I dont know, I just know that it wasnt the company's antivirus he had to get past.

Lmao wow trojans are soo much fun but still its it doesnt say much for Nexon that their billing system was that easy to get into i wonder wats goin to happen to the poor kid

Poor kid? He knew exactly what he was doing and should have been more careful. A sixteen year old is more than aware of what consequences may come from their actions. He deserves what he gets!!

People, come on, READ THE actual TEXT. He planted a trojan. Anyone with an internet connection and google could do what he did. (Im reading the text, "the suspect used software from an illegal website to obtain the ID and password")

Besides, theres been a lot of hackers getting into difficult places, FBI / CIA / NASA, who were the same age.

Now, it is sort of scary that he actually made it into their billing system. Shows some pretty bad neglect on the part of NEXON.

A bit lame that the line "...This hacking event has provoked a lot of discussion among the public, who are shocked that a gamer can even hack into an online game company's billing system" because that puts down the gamers that don't get software just to play and splurge money on it. I'm an oldschool Unreal Tournament gamer and maybe for about a month I played it nonstop because it was fun, then got heavy into content creation and my wife's a professional programmer. So we see more than the colors and the text when we run games.

Learn how they work, take it apart, then make it better. Although ... a 16 year old going even further past the games "development" and into the company itself is pretty impressive. Hell but I've heard of plenty of people that do things "just to prove it can be done"

Depends all on your passion I guess.

He planted a trojan on a former employees computer and got lucky. A monkey with a laptop could do that.

Smart kid. That's some serious dedication to getting what ya want. hehe.

And shouldn't the former employee's account have been removed? Makes it seem the company WANTED someone to do this.

And is anyone else getting views of the movies "Hackers" while having read this? Just totally reminded me of that shit. Great to see this still happens too!!!

Hehe, 1st.

That kinda sucks for the company, but isn't it nearly impossible that a 16-year-old boy hacks such a website ? And shouldn't be former employee accounts removed?
