NCSoft has initiated phase one of the planned free to play conversion of their popular MMO Aion, which will ultimately culminate in the launch of Aion: Ascension.
Today's server maintenance will result in three major changes to Aion, in preparation for Ascension; one new server will go live, all subscriptions will be discontinued and inactive accounts will be reactivated. So, what does this mean for you? It means that when the new server - Kahrun - goes live, players can start registering characters and reserving names. You won't be able to actually play on that server until April 11th but this will ensure you get the name you want and makes starting in Aion: Ascension that much easier.
The changes also mean that if you played Aion in the past and let your account go inactive as you ventured into other games and genres, now might be a great time to consider rejoining the game. Your account is already going to be reactivated and with NCSoft's Truly Free business model, you don't have to worry about subscriptions at all.
Finally, it's important to note that if you still have time left on your Aion subscription, you are not being left in the dark. NCSoft is converting all remaining game time to NCoin at a rate of 40 NCoin per remaining subscription day.
