The rough script for the above video, for those who are not able to or don't want to watch it.
Hi guys, my name is Kaelten and I wanted to take a few moments and help some of our new users who are transitioning from using WowMatrix to the using CurseClient.
From the feedback we've been getting I know that a lot of people are seeing something similar to this when they launch the Curse Client for the first time.
I'm about to show you how you can quickly get back on your feet and have your addons updated in no time. I do, however, recommend making a backup of your Addons folder anytime you run any addon manager.
As you can see on the Your Addons tab some of your addons where identified properly. However if you look at the Unidentified Addons tab many more where not.
This is mostly due to the way WowMatrix managed your addons.
The purpose of the Unidentifed Addons tab is to help you find the close matches on our server.
You can go through your files one at a time and click Install like I'm doing here with Bartender4.
This will download and install just Bartender4, which gives you a little more control than using the install all option.
Install All will go through each addon and automattically install the Best Match we have.
As you can see it's downloading each addon it needs and installing them. Now we'll just wait on auctioneer here since it's the largest.
You'll notice that there are no recomendations on a few at the bottom. This means we can't find a close match on our servers, and we won't go downloading updates from other sites.
Now you can go back to the Your Addons tab and will be able to manage your addon updates from here in the future.
I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion people are having. I'll be looking at doing more tutorials in the future as well.
Thanks and Have fun in Wow!

I have used wowmatrix and loved it but I also understand your issues with it. The talk of a transition is great but until you can get all the add-ons that were available with wowmatrix from/via wowinterface, the talk of a "transition" is still a little early. Surely if Curse and wowinterface can work together on blocking wowmatrix, you can figure out a way to be able to download the add-ons that are only available on wowinterface via the curse downloader. For example Gathersage2, Lightheaded are not listed as available using the client.
I would like to ask the following:
1) Does Curse scan addons at any time for virus/Trojan/key logger?
2) Why and what do you upload from the client in the background, and why?
3) "close matches", what does that mean, am I getting what I want, or what Curse thinks I want?
Thanks
I'm not going to enter the dicussion of why Curse made the changes so WowMatrix wouldn't work with their addons (I've read that Wowinterface has also made similar changes).
Would have been nice if Curse and Wowinterface could have worked out a deal with Wowmatrix that would have been acceptible to all 3 entities.
1. Curse addons all come from CurseForge, where they are scanned when uploaded or packaged. Since we do not link to 3rd party sites, and have control over all the files moved from CurseForge to Curse.com, they have already been scanned before being downloaded.
2. I'll have to let a client developer answer this.
3. Close matches means most files in the addon directory match the version we have on our server, but one or more files may be different. In the case of moving from WowMatrix, this is because WM edits the files on disk to make them appear to work with the current game version. In other cases, this may be because you downloaded the addon from a 3rd party site as part of a UI compilation.
1) Yes, on upload to our author sites.
2) It uploads metadata about your addons for identification purposes, and data uploads to wowdb (if you want to)
3) It uses a closest match algorithm. It means we don't have an exact match but one that's close.

We did contact and try to work things out with them months ago.

I want to be able to search by addon description from the Curse client. This is the main thing I used WoWMatrix for, because the search function on Curse and WoWInterface would only let me search by an addon's NAME, which is hardly helpful if I'm trying to find an addon for a specific purpose. The Curse website would not let me do this either, not even in Advanced search. Why does it have to be so difficult to find mods if you don't know what they're called?
You obviously have the descriptions in the program, as they are visible on the bottom panel. What channels do I have to go through to get somebody to implement this feature?
I'll try to get this on the website at some point in the future, probably in the advanced search. I'll mention it to Adamar about a possible client feature, but I suggest you post about in one of the client or suggestion forums - you might drum up additional support from other users there.
Nice Windows version, but not having other sites' addons sucks.
If this was _any_ resource situation that directly affected you in real life you'd do the _exact_ same thing and after all other options failed you'd stop your resource from being taken.
What would you do in our situation that we haven't done if someone was taking something from you?
* We asked them to stop.
* We informed their users.
* We tried to negotiate with them.
* We even tried to pay them for their work and purchase the software.
In the end we had no choice but to protect ourselves, our legitimate users, and our authors.
which could be done if the addons were marked as 3.1 compatible by the curse.com website database, which they are not.
perhaps also if the client could show if an addon has a beta/alpha version with an icon in the client, so one could choose not to overwrite their 3.1 compatible copy with a previous release.
and on the subject of broken addons, install a template/shell for 'known but not registered here' addons like LightHeaded, so that the client does not need to be told about them when asking about unknown addons.
