Official Update Regarding Virus Spread Through Rotating Ads

Greetings, and happy holidays!

Recently Curse became aware of users receiving a virus from an advertisement Curse sites had in rotation.

Issue Identified and Fixed

This issue has been identified and we are taking the appropriate steps to rectify the problem.

  • Curse staff monitored user reports of an issue which helped lead us to the cause of the problem.  User reports were invaluable in discovering the cause of the virus leak.
  • The cause of the problem has been identified as a leaked virus called "Win 7 Security 2012" spread by an ad in rotation on Curse sites.  When originally put in rotation this ad contained no such virus.  Please note that this is not an ad that Curse had control over, and the virus infiltrated our own ad networks.
  • All ads in rotation are currently disabled as we assure that they are all virus free.  Rest assured that any and all ads that are found to be infected will be promptly removed.
  • The Curse network servers have not been compromised, and all personal data is safe.

Removing the Virus from your System

If you have been affected by this virus and need to remove it, please follow the steps listed here under the "Automated Removal Instructions for Win 7 Antispyware 2012 & Vista Antivirus 2012 using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" header.

Future Prevention

We appreciate your understanding as we resolve this very serious matter.  We are working with our advertising partners to understand how this infected ad passed through our combined filters.

Curse has always taken care to be ensure viruses never reach our users through our sites or Client, and we will continue to uphold our standard of running safe ads.

Thank you again for your patience and your assistance in pinpointing the cause of this issue. We will keep you informed of any other updates, but at this time all Curse sites are free of viruses and completely safe for browsing.

As always, AdBlock will also prevent this sort of thing.

I thought it was from Curse. >.> Wish I had seen this earlier, I got it last night and it got to the point that I couldn't open anything at all, even my internet browser or registry to edit it out. Had to reformat my hard drive. Oh well, at least it is gone now. :P

So other than not even issuing an apology here to us, all they say is follow MS instructions on removal? Come on guys, you passed a virus to your customers, in my case causing me to spend 6 hours rebuilding my windows install. Perhaps I should go back to manually updating all of them from the author sites.

Not that I'm defending curse.com in this case, but what makes you think the ads on the authors sites are any more secure? ;-P

It's back this morning, 05/03/2012 found the programme and switched to process and it was Curse.  Killed it off and am now running a NOD32 scan.
