EVE Online is close to releasing something that will be the stepping-stone to a much larger project -- called Incarna -- allowing players to exit their ships and walk around as their avatars. You know, the one you created so long ago but have never actually seen yet.
It will be a reality soon enough, and the Incursion expansion's new character creator is just the first piece of the puzzle. Players who are interested in trying this out can do so on Singularity, EVE Online's test server, within the next few days. You may want to take advantage of that opportunity to become acclimated with it, because updating your avatar with this new tool will be required, even for existing characters.
This new character creator is a very big upgrade over the game's current version. In the past when creating your avatar, you simply modified its look via sliders. With this new creator, however, you'll be able to grab on to portions of the avatar's face and head and drag it around -- allowing you to literally sculpt the look of your in-game persona.
While player avatars in EVE Online will remain torsos for now, the first release of Incarna is planned for summer of 2011, according to Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Creative Director of EVE Online. At that point, you'll be able to exit your ship and roam around the space stations corridors to your heart's content.
