Inferno: An In-Depth Overview of EVE Online's Newest Free Expansion

CCP Games recently launched their 17th free expansion to EVE Online: Inferno.  This addition has shaken up the dynamics of PvP in EVE, adding sweet features such as Factional Warfare to entice both veterans and newcomers to the game!

FACTIONAL WARFARE

This combat system allows players to sign up with one of four factions to war the others for a variety of control points and rewards. Inferno lowers the faction standings a player needs to sign up with a faction, effectively reducing the initial barrier to entry and allowing more players into this level of gameplay earlier.

The expansion also streamlines the ruleset for Factional Warfare, creating a ‘light’ version of the more advanced alliance wars of EVE that is not only more intuitive than before but also prepares players for the epic-scale sovereignty battles at the alliance level of gameplay. Additionally, a dynamic ranking system, improved personal rewards and more consequence to the territorial control aspect will be added, essentially offering some great reasons for players of all types to leap into a combat system where one is basically putting their entire starship on the line each time they engage in battle.

WAR DECLARATIONS

CCP Games also took a look at the core PVP gameplay of EVE Online, corporation and alliance level War Declarations, and has introduced changes in Inferno to alter aspects that may have had some players hesitant to engage in this popular but sometimes daunting aspect of the game. To start, Inferno closed some of the loopholes that allowed some aggressors to lock a besieged corporation into an endless war. With alternate exit strategies available, the possibility of war will become a far more
palatable scenario.

War reports and historical data on declared wars are now implemented as well, providing an in-game timeline and a certain degree of immortalization of one’s efforts - an attractive feature for lore fans and fame-fueled space warriors. However, not everyone wants to wage war themselves, and they often turn to mercenaries, outside help to support them during wartime. Inferno appears to have gone to bat for these unsung (and handsomely paid) heroes, too.

Mercenary Contracts

Players are now able to post contracts for individuals or entire fleets on a market dedicated to allowing opportunistic fortune hunters to leap into the fray, at a the price of their choosing. Players interested in getting involved in fleet warfare, but not necessarily looking to start a war of their own to do it, now have a new system and a great excuse to take the plunge into the game’s massive PVP conflicts.

So there you have it - players old and new alike now have more of a drive to participate in some of EVE's revolutionary PvP!  Several reasons for hesitancy have been removed and tons of new content has been added to make PVP much more enticing to those who have been sitting curiously on the sidelines. But, Inferno also includes many more features, such as:

  • Missiles and Launchers: savor every moment from launch to impact with missile launchers and dramatic new missile effects
  • Visual Updates: Enhanced graphics on ship models and increased options in the character creator
  • Unified Inventory, 16 new modules and dozens of enhancements to both graphics and gameplay
