CCP Games released a statement today announcing that EVE Online has surpassed 500,000 subscribers worldwide, continuing a ten year trend of subscriber growth since the game's launch.
“Ten years after release, it is incredibly inspiring that, through a lot of hard work from our EVE Online team, we are crossing the half-million subscriber mark,” said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP. “For me, this is a true testament that EVE can live on forever, as long as we do right by her. We have not come to this point alone; millions of players have helped push us to this milestone. I now know in my mind what I previously only believed in my heart: that EVE will outlive us all.”
Newly thriving from a relaunch in China and seeing a boost in numbers since expansion Retribution's deployment in late 2012, the team is indeed giving their fanbase reasons to keep playing. Or as the development team puts it, players are giving themselves reasons to keep playing, since content is player-generated rather than straight-up developed. Furthermore, upcoming free-to-play MMOFPS DUST 514 is joining the universe, having gone into open beta in January exclusively for the PS3. With the same real-time universe shared, corporations can coordinate attacks between the two games.
Commemoration of the milestone 10 year anniversary begins with the upcoming sold out EVE Fanfest in Reykjavik, Iceland, during which CCP will kick off a year of celebration under a unified “Second Decade” theme. Fanfest will be streamed live for those who can't attend, and throughout the year CCP will be supporting player gatherings around the world and holding in-game events to further the storyline of the combined universe as it continues to grow.
EVE Online is a player-driven, persistent-world space MMORPG. In this science fiction universe, you can pilot endlessly customizable ships through a massive galaxy containing over 7,500 star systems. Interact with others through professions and activities like mining, piracy, manufacturing, trading, exploration, or battle against and with each other in a variety of PvE and PvP environments!
