Evony is a browser-based multiplayer online game in which players build or destroy empires. It's quite a bit more complicated than that once you get into it, but the main aim of the game is to make your cities stronger by bolstering their heroes, resources, offense, and defense for the purpose of attacking NPC or players' cities.
The game has been around for quite some time now; ever since early 2009, in fact. In that time Evony has gone through many changes since its original form, including the release of Evony: Age II. It's also gathered a staggering 18 million players in over 167 countries.
We've had a chance to sit down with some of the development team of Evony and take a look at some of the features that really help create a great gaming experience. Here are some of our favorites:
Newbie Friendliness
With so many strategy options and ways to play, this game has the potential to be very confusing to new players. This is a complete non-issue though with a guided tutorial, and quests that teach players what to do while giving helpful rewards.
Just by following the initial quest objectives, you can build an efficient city. Besides the building and upgrade quests though, there are scouting missions, reinforcement missions, transport missions, and attack missions to complete so the player ends up with a well-rounded experience of the overall game.
Daily Giveaways
Each day, players receive an Aries Amulet which they can then use to spin something called the Wheel of Fortune. Massive prizes can be won on this wheel, some of which amount to up to $100 USD worth of item shop goods. Many of the prizes, plus more items can be purchased from the item shop if the player is so inclined.
Breaking the 24/7 Cycle
One of the draws of Evony is the persistent world. Resources continue to be gathered, battles continue to be fought, all while the player is offline. An inherent drawback of this system is that your assets can still be attacked while you're offline for the night, or on vacation.
Evony has checks in place for this however, with features like Vacation Mode. This allows players to 'freeze' their cities so that all statuses are halted, and they cannot collect resources, attack, or be attacked until the time on the mode runs out.
There are also various strategy items which make you more undesirable to a potential attacker, so your own creativity is the limit!
Real-World Historic Heroes and Cities
Scattered throughout the game you can find historic heroes and cities based on real-world history. These are much-sought-after by the players of Evony, and often very difficult to obtain. Some of the higher level cities take massive manpower and good strategy to obtain and are a server-wide event for the community.
Social Possibilities
Like most games, Evony has many ways to interact with other players in the game. You can ally with up to 100 other players to help defend each other and attack other alliances or cities. Mass-scale battles can be fought because of this, so some really epic wars have been fought and observed on several servers.
Players keep in contact through World, Alliance, and private chats to stay in the loop, and there is full Facebook integration! You can sign in with Facebook right off the bat and not have to register in any other way, plus send gifts and share your accomplishments with your friends.
There is even a smattering of politics, as Governors and Governesses can be elected for limited control over certain aspects of the game.
