This morning Square Enix released a new update for Final Fantasy XI Online. Included in the update is a new battle system called Pankration.
The first question that comes to mind has to be "What is Pankration?" It dates back to the Greek Olympic games in 648 BC, where it was first introduced. Historians believe that this Greek sport was one of the most popular in the Olympic games - so what better sport to add to FFXI than Pankration?!
It's also safe to say that there will be no pitbulls involved in this battle system, as Hiromichi Tanaka - Executive officer with Square Enix - mentioned jokingly during his keynote at the Austin Game Developers Conference Thursday. That aside, players can purchase a "Soultrapper" and go out into the world of Vana'diel to capture a monster that they wish to pit against other players' monsters.
There are two types of competitions players can take part in with their creatures:
- Exhibition (Battlecages “Annihilation” “Bloodlust” “Carnage”)
As long as there is an opening, players can enter their monsters in exhibition matches at any time they wish. However, there are no level restrictions in any of the three cages, and no records of winners or losers will be kept. If players wish, they can have their monsters pit against those of their choice by forming a party with another monster’s owner and both submitting their applications at the same time.
- Tournament (Battlecage “Diablo”)
Here, players can pit their monsters against the current cage champion. If it wins, it is declared the new champion and will continue to battle opponents until it is dethroned.
This new system has quite a lot involved in it, so if you want to learn more about it, head over to the Pankration explanation on PlayOnline.
