Square Enix has announced that subscription fees will be returning once again to their MMO Final Fantasy XIV, after an extended period of no fees.
To understand why fees are returning, it's important to understand why they went away to begin with. Final Fantasy XIV was always intended to be a subscription based game but unfortunately, the initial launch did not go as smoothly as Square Enix had hoped for. Ultimately, they were forced to abandon the subscription fees while they got the game to a place where they were comfortable charging for it.
The team smoothed out bugs and enhanced performance until they arrived where they are now; a place where they are comfortable at reintroducing subscription fees to Final Fantasy XIV. But before you get too upset at having to pay again, Square Enix has announced that the fees are substantially lower than they originally were.
The fees will go into effect on January 6th of 2012 and have been reduced to the following service options:
30 Days - $6.99 per month
90 Days - $5.99 per month
180 Days - $4.99 per month
All of these service options are on top of a $3.00 per month, per character fee. Sometime in 2012, Square has said that the subscription fees will return to their original price model which will be somewhere around $3.00 more per month, for each service option.
