Square Enix has announced that they will be introducing a brand new game mechanic in the next patch for Final Fantasy XIV - a Jobs System.
The Job System is designed to provide players a way to grow their characters outside of the Armoury system that they've previously relied on. The Armoury system isn't going anywhere, but the new Jobs system is designed to complement the Armoury with a more narrow approach to character growth.
The system starts at level 30, and features a sequence of special quests available at certain levels that unlock systems, abilities, and job-specific equipment. The series of job quests will not involve extremely difficult tasks such as fighting primals. Rather, they will be new game elements intended to boost character growth and motivate players.
Patch 1.21 will include seven jobs with their own dedicated quests.
To take on the special quests, player characters must have reached level 30 in their main class (and level 15 for one other specified class).
Upon completing a job, you will be given a Soul Crystal which can be equipped in the job-specific slot. Once equipped, players are switched to that job and can start learning job-specific actions. Should you choose to switch jobs after spending some time at a specific job, you won't have to worry about losing any of the work you've put in - level and experience points will not change or leave when you switch to a new job.
