Guild Wars 2: The Evolution of Narrative in Personal Story

A new blog post over at ArenaNet's official site talks about the process of creating the stories for our heroes in Tyria. Leif Chapelle, part of the content design team at ArenaNet, gives us a glimpse behind the scenes, going into detail regarding how they go about creating the personal story narratives that we'll be experiencing in the game. The sheer amount of story branches they have to cover in the game quickly adds up..

"[..] to experience every potential storyline being told from level 1 to 10, you’d need to play the game 30 times (5 races times 3 initial stories times 2 internal branches in each storyline). And that’s just the first ten levels of the game."

He also touches on how they handle things when multiple people team up during the personal story missions, something they'll have full support for as they do scale up with the group's size, where each member has the ability to opt out of sharing the progress from a completed mission and later complete it in whatever fashion they want. This'll keep your friends and group members from forcing story choices onto your character. For example: if everyone in your group wants to sacrifice little Billy to save the city, but you'd rather take the bigger picture approach and leave him to the Destroyers, you will be allowed to do that.

Come discuss it with other Guild Wars 2 fans on Guild Wars 2 Guru.
